Has you heart ever been broken by a fighter? If so, who was it?
Never fall in love with a fighter. If you do, he'll likely break your heart. And try as I may, this is something to which I have never become inured.
When Paul Briggs recently was "waxed" by one of Danny Green's pawing air shots, many of Paul's fans were crushed--not so much that he lost, but by the way he lost. Heck, I even took his photo off my website. But having one of your favorite boxer's break your heart is nothing new. It's been happening to me since at least 1951
The great Roy Jones Jr. had any number of opportunities to get out. He could have retired after beating John Ruiz but no, he decided to fight on despite being weight drained and gaunt. Antonio Tarver proved what a foolish decision that was in their second match. Still, Jones got another solid opportunity by beating Anthony Hanshaw and Tito Trinidad, but he insisted on staying, and in the process, let his legions of fans down as he was humbled and bloodied over twelve rounds by Joe Calzaghe. Incredibly, he had what amounted to a third chance to get out after beating Omar Sheika and Jeff Lacey in 2009. By then, his record was 54-5 and he had the wherewithal to leave on a positive note. But it was not to be. Inexplicitly, he went on to fight Australian Danny Green and Bernard Hopkins and succeeded in breaking hearts from Seoul, South Korea, to Pensacola, Florida.
Joe Calzaghe joined those who broke the mold when he announced his retirement with a perfect record and a guaranteed legacy as one of the truly great fighters and clearly one of the greatest British boxers ever. His fans have fallen in love with him over the years and rightly so, but will he stay retired or will he too hear that call that says "come on back." Someone like Chad Dawson or Carl Froch is out there waiting? Will the temptation be too great?
Remember, if you fall in love with a fighter, he'll break your heart just about every time and Joe Calzaghe will likely not be an exception. Be on guard.

I think the only way this can happen is if you're a huge fan of a fighter, and then he does something completely out of character, like give up in a fight, or stops taking fighting seriously and embarrasses himself out there. Otherwise, it's more of a dissapointment but at a lesser level. To me, when Cotto fired his uncle and took on his physical trainer, Joe Santiago... that was a bit of a disappointment. And the results showed, 'cause Cotto took entirely the WRONG gameplan into the Pacquaio fight. Then he went out and hired Emanuel Steward, which is wonderful, but a little like closing the barn door after the horse is gone. But nonetheless... he's back on the right track and I admire him for correcting a mistake.

Even though he won, Jerry Quarry's fight with Lorenzo Zanon was heartbreaking to watch becuase by then , Jerry's reflexes were totally shot and he was in thr beginning of Pugislistica Dementia though few realiez it at the time.

re: Has you heart ever been broken by a fighter? If so, who was it?
Marciano, Monzon, Lewis, Lopez, and Collins
Some broke the mold including Rocky Marciano, Carlos Monzon, Lennox Lewis, Ricardo Lopez, and Brian Mitchell. Marvelous Marvin Hagler came oh so close, but Sugar Ray Leonard may well have ruined his going away party. Henry Maske broke German hearts in 1996, but won them back eleven years later with a remarkable redemptive win over Virgil Hill. Dariusz Michalczewski was unable to do the same.

it hurt, mainly due to the fact i realised that i had advised all my mates to get on hatton to win and they had thus spent hundreds on my advice
I wasnt worried about their loss of earnings, silly c*nts shouldnt listen to me - but i was concerned with my physical well being ;D;D;D

re: Has you heart ever been broken by a fighter? If so, who was it?
I really can't get into one fighter or team serious enough to loose a night of sleep over them. I don't know, work for or am i related to any of these guys. And i'd say about 99% of these athleates could really give a crap about fans when it really comes down to it. I'm a fan i watch and follow but that's about it. Shit you can't even collect trading cards anymore cause these guys in sports switch thier loyalties so much. Yet i've seen people willing to start fights, talk shit, sell thier firstborn for some fighter that doesn't even know they exist.......yet do all that and call them to support you in any way in any area of your life, and see how loud that dial tone gets....

re: Has you heart ever been broken by a fighter? If so, who was it?
Oh my this one is painfully easy for me. Who's let me down more than Iron Mike? To this day, if you told me Mike planned to come back in his 40's for a grudge match againt Evander, part of me would rejoice at seeing him in the ring again, even if most of me knew better and oughta to be ashamed.
I'm a product of the 80's and no one gave life to the late 80's boxing world like Mike. I loved him and I love him still. His entire career after 1990 is just heartbreaking to relive. Time and again I would get super pumped and let down. Excited again and let down. I remember thinking he actually had a shot againt Lewis on fight night. There was always something about Mike that made you ignore your better judgement about what he had left in the tank. For me he was always one punch from being back on top and I would will it with all my heart and it made no difference.
Being a fan of Mike Tyson has permanently exhausted my emotions.
And whoever said Joe Louis vs Rocky Marciano... hell yea, spot on. That one was heart wrenching. Thank you Rock for being merciful and knocking him stupid when you did.
My dad's chiming in saying he watched Frasier/Foreman at a bar with a bunch of his buddies on fight night and was just devestated when Smokin Joe got bounced off the canvas six times by that young upstart. I can see where he's coming from. Frasier is an easy cat to like and he got manhandled.

Didn't really brake my heart that. Sad to see, but it was obvious Hatton wasn't right and as time has gone on that has been confirmed. Plus he was beat by a steroid cheat. So no. definately not heart broken.

Chuck DAVEY OVER Chico Vejar. College kid beats blue collar guy. I wept. :-X

re: Has you heart ever been broken by a fighter? If so, who was it?
Jermain Taylor
I thought he was something special- something really special. When he beat Hopkins the first time, I was ecstatic despite the controversy surrounding the close decision. I felt a prospect I'd detected myself was going to be a phenom and I had this smug pride when he won the title.
After that:eek:
Antonio Margarito
I had backed Cotto heavily before the Battle. That night was a revelation. Not for a second did I lose an ounce of respect for Miguel, but I gained a lot for Margarito.
Then he turns around and gets exposed for cheating.

I thought the same thing. J.T. Although I wasn't a huge fan just the way he lost his fight's were very heart breaking. Pavlik,Froch,Abraham and all happening in very dramatic fashion.

re: Has you heart ever been broken by a fighter? If so, who was it?
Junior Witter I really fancied him to beat Hatton then when the lazy bastard let Bradley (Classy fighter) outwork him in his own back yard, well I didn't even watch the rest of the fight card that included a Froch fight.

re: Has you heart ever been broken by a fighter? If so, who was it?
Oh goodness where do I start...
As a kid I admired and followed every step of Jorge "Maromero" Paez and crushed me as a kid...
Other then that seeing JCC and ODLH fight past their prime wasn't heartbreaking but it sucked to see it happen.

Margo went from being my favorite fighter to one I just didn't want to discuss any longer. I never got into the hate parade, but I sure as hell was dissapointed that he never fessed up or showed real remorse. But I'll still pay to watch him fight Pac. Just being honest with myself.

My man speaking the truth. Yeah I got certain fighters I favor more than others. But the only time I'm getting overly upset is when I put money on him and lost.

Re: Has you heart ever been broken by a fighter? If so, who was it?
I can't say broken hearted but HIGHLY disappointed in Floyd Mayweather. I've been an avid fan of his for years and find myself no longer being able to defend him after not taking this Pacquiao fight.
