Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
So who are we going for?
Khan had wins over Malignaggi and Maidana and confirmed himself as one of the best fighters in the 140 lb division as well as one of the hottest new draws in boxing.
Froch had a mixed year. Losing a close decision to Kessler he surprised everybody with a one sided domination of Artur Abraham, the kind of performance that nobody knew he had in him. Unfortunately his talent has gone all but unnoticed in Britain where his fights still don't even get televised.
Haye has probably had the most press attention, although mostly for his mouth. This year he has beaten Audley Harrison and John Ruiz, not the best competition to be fair.
For me Khan has had the best year. Wins over Paulie and Maidana are pretty impressive for a 24 year old kid, and he's become a HBO attraction to boot.
Froch has fought the best opposition but lost to Kessler, and Abraham did look equally poor against Dirrell.
Haye has talked a lot, but fought nobody of signficance.
So I say Khan, but what do you guys think?
-
Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
Khan by a mile for me, but you could definitely make a case for Froch. I still think he beat Kessler.
Anyone who votes for Haye is a moron. All he's done is talk shit and fight no-hopers.

Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
I would agree, but certainly to the casual sports fan in Britain it will be all David Haye I guess. He's all the papers talk about, well until Khan's win last week at least.
-
Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
Quite easily Amir tbh. The dominant victory over Paulie was impressive and his first 9 rounds against Maidana were almost flawless. He then proved he has heart in that fight.
Haye has had one fight this year (Harrison was not a fight) and it was against average opposition.
Froch has had one good win.
-
Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
Amir Khan because he proved something to the doubters.

Haye did fight Ruiz aswell, Froch no matter if you think he beat Kessler or not he has an loss this year so hasrd for him to get it over Amir.

That was the fight he counted, he didnt count the Harrison fight.
It's ironic that most fightfans dont even think Haye was the boxer of the year in Britain, and yet he's been nominated for Sports personality of the year. I guess Amir's success came too late maybe.

I can understand Haye been nominated for the Sports Personality of the Year. He's had a massive year in terms of raising his profile, he just hasn't accomplished much in the ring.

Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
That's the frustration with that award and it's a pretty poor barometer. I was referring to Ruiz as Haye's only fight. It can also be argued that Khan has now actually had a defining fight and Haye has not.

Haye has had defining fights, against Enzo and Mormeck, arguably Valuev. Not this year though.
-
Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
Khan has fought and beaten two decent opponents, not the best in the division by any stretch, but solid opposition. Haye has fought old man Ruiz and some other bum. Froch lost to Kessler, but did come back superbly against Abraham. Froch has the better opposition, but has a loss to his name. In that sense I would have to say Khan and I have no problems with that. At 24 he is doing well all things considered.
I really do think Tim Bradley is the best fighter in the division though.
-
Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
I can make cases with myself that all three were not, most notably Enzo based on his performances ever since that fight. But using the same logic I can no longer class Calzaghe Lacy as defining for Joe so I'm not sure if it's fair to retrospectively change the goalposts so to speak.
Haye has definitely done little of merit this year though.
-
Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
Froch, mainly because i think he beat Kessler and he easily beat Abraham.

And I created an option 5 just for you :p

In hindsight Bilbo can you honestly say that was a defining fight? The Lee Swaby fight in truth showed enzo was a powerful chinny European standard fighter at best for me, people may argue Haye ruined him but looking closely Enzo was nowhere near world class and had already been ko.d by Lee Swaby.

Yeah i agree. Enzo was garbage.

I actually voted for the positive one in Khans favour, I will give credit where credit is due.

Yeah maybe you're right. But Enzo was still a world champion whereas Maidana never has been.
It was billed as the biggest all british fight for years and Haye smashed him to show he was a different class.
Mormeck and Valuev were defining though, Mormeck was regarded as the number 1 cruiserweight and he proved he was a legit heavyweight beating an over 7foot giant in Nikolay, even if it was a positively soporific effort.

Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
I voted David Haye, the new force at HW. He is the only man in HW championship history to not have a punch landed on him in 2 rounds! Not even Ali, Tyson, Holyfield, Foreman, Dempsey, Louis, and all other HW legends can say that.:p
-
Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
Khan, he's proved a lot of doubters wrong this year. Froch came back well from the Kessler defeat, but Haye let himself down getting involved in the Fraudley fiasco, hopefully he can pull it out the bag next year
-
Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
Eventhough Khan clearly won the fight, I was actually more impressed with Maidana (except for the elbow). And for that, I have to give slight edge for Froch.
-
Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
i'll go with carl froch. i think he's the UK's best fighter. amir khan, although very good, is a bit overrated!
-
Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
Easily Froch look at his opposition in comparison to Haye and Khan he has been fighting the best and making a real great show of it. He lost his title in a real close war then fought Abraham and dominated him! He deserves it.
-
Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
Got to go with Froch, his comp has been higher, he regained his title and the old dog learnt new tricks for Abraham.
-
Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
Difficult one, personally I'm going to say I back the underdog in Froch, as he goes about his business despite the public view and gets the job done at a top class level. He's so underrated by the mainstream due to the shoddy promoting, and deserves to be a household name.
However, he lacks the 'personality' that this award demands. Therefore Haye is the inevitable choice in the publics opinion. Fighting on British soil, and capturing the non-boxing viewing public. His personality sells fights, along with his ability.
Khan has a good case after his performance against Maidana.
As I said though for me, Froch, definitely from a boxing fans perspective. He deserves some attention too.
Got a bit mixed up with the shitty BBC sports personality that I watched there :p

Froch has a great personailty witty clever and is very outspoken his problem is his promoter
-
Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
Ricky Burns. Fuck the other 3
-
Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
1. Amir Khan - undoubtedly
2. David Haye
3. Nathan Cleverly (beat undefeated Karo Murat and EU champ Nadjib Mohammedi)
Froch lost to Kessler so he's out of the race.
-
Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
Froch who can argue he is the best in the division the others can't.
-
Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
Well it ain't Khan. Who's he fought? No title holders and no legit number one contenders.
Haye for a similar reason as khan altghough there are only 3 other fighters in his division that could test him and at least 2 don't want to fight him. The Audley fight was a shame.
Froch has beat genuine title holders and has defended agaist good opposition. He's fought the best in the division and narrowly lost to kessler away from home.
On paper you have to go with froch.
-
Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
Has to be Khan for me. He dominated Paulie and beat Maidana. People said when he fought Paulie that he needed to fight a banger. Maidana is one of the hardest punchers in boxing and he passed the test. I think Froch can now claim to be Britain's best boxer at the minute though. Khan second and Haye 3rd. It's not been a great year for Haye. The Ruiz fight had to happen but Fraudley? It really was a shocking fight and kind of makes a mockery of the HW belt.

No, on the paper it’s Khan and it’s not even close !
Froch beat Abraham # 10 S.M. according to the Ring
Khan beat Maidana # 4 and Malignaggi # 8 Jr.W. according to the Ring as well.
-
Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
My vote goes to Khan.
He had one impressive performance against a top 10 JWW in Paulie and went on to beat big puncher Maidana ( top 5 JWW) in a good fight where he got tested but came back and proved himself.
Froch looked great against Abraham but his loss to Kessler earlier this year hurts him. ( i thought Kessler deserved the win, really close fight though)
-
Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
i personal think froch beat kessler and along with his win against AA he probably should pip khan
however the scores went against him against kessler so youd probly have to say khan
-
Re: Khan, Froch or Haye. Who is the British fighter of the year?
Probably A Mere Con.
Honorable mentions: Burns, Hatton(yeah I know..) and Cleverly.
