why dont i like amir khan?
Im not one to dislike boxers, or critisize their styles or go on about how overrated they are when they lose
i have disliked fighters, andre dirrell for one and i dont rate wlad klit that highly
i definately have never really disliked a british fighter, in fact i am usually always well in support of them
so why dont i like khan? anyone any ideas?

You will like him more when he arrogantly steps up to 147 and is licking the canvas in Las Vegas.

I suppose he could do it meekly, but that would be gay. You might as well go up in weight and have some confidence in your abilities.
Amir Khan is a strange one. I don't particularly hate him as some think, but I do dislike him. There is just something about him that I cannot warm to. I always struggle with fighters who are made millionaires before their fight totals reach double digits. Then it's the shameless pawning of the fighter on PPV before they really deserve to be. Then it's the cocky comments. Then it's the freak 'win' over Barrera. Then it's more pointless filler just to take advantage of mugs who have bought into the hype. Then it's stories about stealing contracts from hotel rooms. Then it's more filler in McCloskey. Then it's another dodgy stoppage. It's just hard to warm to a fighter who seems to be continually associated with nonsense and carry on.
Maidana and Malignaggi are his best wins and an old Morales has already put up as almost a good showing against Maidana whilst totally outside his optimal weightclass. Malignaggi has been beaten up before. Let's see him against Bradley, that will show us all.

To be fair to Khan. He can only fight whats put in front of him. If his promoter wants to pay him daft money early in his career, then it's hardly his fault. Would you as a young boxer turn down that sort of money and exposure, especially after having a good Olympics games ? Dam sure I wouldnt :)

loved naz, one of my favourite boxers of all time
so no its nothing to do with his colour
i appreciate his skills, he seems like an nice articulate man, bolton is very local to me and that usually gets more of my support
but when he fights i usually want him to lose

Re: why dont i like amir khan?
I don't like Amir Khan and probably never will, but as a boxer im starting to warm to him. He showed some bottle vs Marcos Maidana, and if he fights Timothy Bradley next then i really can't doubt him.
-
Re: why dont i like amir khan?
I can't stand him either - but I have a long history of disliking certain British sportsmen....
He's a millionaire, young, believes his own hype and is a bit thick. May as well be a footballer.
If he had accepted being on sky sports 3 for free last weekend perhaps it would have had a positive effect. But he didn't.
The fact that people will tune him to hope he gets twatted as well as to see him win should ensure the £££££ roll in for him for at least the next 12 months at least.

Khan is so shite it's unbelievable!
Yeah bethinks he a superstar with his low end WBA belt. Hand picking fighters and not chasing Prescott.
54 seconds khan

see i dont agree with this
his chin is still suspect if you ask me but as far as his mix of skill and power goes i think he is top 10 in the world
i think he is a very good fighter that can go all the way, i just dont like him

I agree eric - the chin will be the only thing stopping him and because of it opponents will always fancy their chances.

Re: why dont i like amir khan?
If he was white and called Dave Smith, I don't think as many people would hate him.
Just saying.
Make of that what you will...

I think Khan is a good chin short of being a very good, multi-weight world champion. But he aint got agood chin :-\

was that meaning the fact that he is asian affects people liking him. because from what i see on this board, british people love David Haye, and he isn't white...

When you ask an open-ended question, you're not going to hear what you want.
I'm not saying it is his race in yours or anyone's case (well maybe Otley's considering all the random 'immigrant' comments he throws in), but it's also worth noting that a lot has changed since Naz. 9/11, 7/7 & the subsequent demonization of Muslims is now vastly different so the old 'I supported Naz so I can't be racist' argument doesn't work.
Also supporting a boxer of a different colour doesn't mean you can't hold prejudices against that group. I rooted for Calzaghe every fight of his career, it doesn't mean that there's no way that I can be racist against white people.
Anyway there are quite a few reasons to dislike Khan (especially if you were a fan of one of his opponents), but I think with a proportion of people his race does play a factor.
So I agree with Koppas on that point, but I will also say that Khan's race gives him a legion of Asian fans who wouldn't follow him or the sport otherwise and that's what enables him to do 50,000+ PPV sales on a week's notice on Primetime, so it's a double-edged sword.
-
Re: why dont i like amir khan?
Rantcatrat, sadly what ono posted is what some people will be thinking. People may not like to hear it but that is why some people find the slightest thing to have a go at Amir Khan. His race/religion definitely plays a factor.

i dont disagree that race does play a part in the wider picture, and i didnt disagree with koppas
its very easy to put it down to race tho, which is why i ignored it
i should have known it would come up and looking back i am suprised it took so long
if the thread is still about me tho, race isnt an issue
If someone has become rascist because of what a handful of people have done then they are pretty stoopid
there are nob head muslims just as there are nob head catholics and if a catholic does something terrible, it doesnt mean all catholics will

People sadly are pretty stupid though. Muslims are taking our jobs/raping our women/living off benefits/building hate mosques/forcibly converting household pets/planning to blow up the whole world, and that's only if you take in even a tenth of what gets printed in the tabloid press. It's bound to seep through & affect how people think of them & thereby Khan, who actually is just a normal British lad who happens to be Muslim.
I don't see Khan as any more arrogant than Haye or Froch, so I don't think that can be it. One thing that could justify it is when he talks about himself in the 3rd person. I don't think Khan realizes that the American accent gives the likes of Floyd & Roy Jones the swagger to pull it off, whereas done in a slightly stuttering Lancashire accent, he just sounds like a tit ;D

Only if you are at the top of your game can you refer to yourself in the third person. Floyd Mayweather is allowed to do it. As was Roy Jones. Amir Khan shouldn't be allowed to refer to himself like that. If anything, Sky Sports should bleep it out. ;D

you are right hes not even that arrogant
maybe if he was more arrogant and claimed he was gonna break peoples faces id like him more
i like haye and froch for that
i think he just needs to grow some balls, be a man. I appreciate boxers who are tough and get stuck in, risk it a bit
yeah the last 3 rounds of maidana fight he took some punches and didnt go down but as soon as he took one he started running and carried on running and trying to cover up
even against mclousky the one punch of any note he took for a split second he seemed to bottle it and not know what to do

Re: why dont i like amir khan?
Without doubt there's a minority of boxing fans that hate Khan because he's a "paki." Even some on here, I bet. However, they are far outweighed by the support Khan enjoys.
He just sold 15,000 tickets and did 50,000 PPV's. There is no way possible that the vast majority of those buyers were racists paying to watch Khan lose. It's the complete opposite.
Froch has never sold more than 6000 tickets and 20,000 PPV. I bet he would love to have Khan's racist buyers ;)

He didn't run against Maidana. Haye probably takes less punches than Khan, he's just got amazing power so there never really last that late. I like Froch a lot more now that he used his skills against Abraham than the horrific mess he put out against Dirrell swinging with roundhouses.
Khan has a dodgy chin, fact is when he was hurt against Maidana he got through the round, but still looked to engage. Boxing is all about hitting and not getting hit. Khan might have a dodgy chin, but one thing he doesn't lack is bottle, look at how hard he was trying to get up against Prescott. A bottlejob would've stayed firmly on that canvas.

Froch hasn't had even a quarter of the publicity that Amir Khan receives. If he was promoted well, which he never has been, he'd be as big a star as Khan and Haye. Hopefully his split from Hennessey will change that.

I completely agree. The guy has taken as many challenges as any current British elite fighter, but doesn't have half the publicity. It's a shame really.

He probably has the best resume in the world over the past couple of years, let alone the world.
It's absolutely criminal that half of the UK probably don't even know who he is.

Yawn…at the race card Again
I hate Amir Khan and it's jack shit to do with his race
My fella is Arab my kids are mixed race I dont give a toss what colour anyone is I don't care about immigration ( one world and it dint BELONG to any one race)
But Amir khan I hate with a passion
And like I've said before he so wrapped up in cotton wool u would think he was White
Now I just wish someone would hurry tfu and knock him out
That's it thankyou :)
-
Re: why dont i like amir khan?
I'm guessing that these are the main reasons why people don't like him from what I've seen with boxing fans.
1. There is a perceived image of arrogance to him.
2. He got a lot of press due to his olympic glory and making very good money as he turned pro and going to PPV so early in his career.
Now to address these 2 points from my point of view. Most boxers have a degree of arrogance to him, yes even the so called "humble" ones like Pac. Just see the prefight talking and almost every boxer has a degree of arrogance. The 2nd point a lot of people might be a little pissed that he's making so much money and getting so much exposure where they felt he hasn't earned it. But ask yourself, if you were in Khan's shoes would you turn down the money and exposure? So I think those 2 points are the biggest issues that boxing fans have with Khan.
And 1 last thing, quite a few people are saying that Khan is cherry picking opponents (like Otley), I thought so at first too but have changed my mind since the Maidana fight. You don't cherry pick guys like Maidana and Bradley in a span of 7 months. One guy is the hardest puncher of the division and 1 guy is the no. 1 in the division. Those are 2 very good opponents. That's just irrational hating to say Khan is cherry picking opponents at this stage of his career.
