Where does Tarver rank all time?
Is he a fighter that was at the right place and right time? or does he deserve some due, i cant distinguish wether he is a Buster Douglas type guy, or perhaps a Duran, Frazier typa fella, thoughts?
-
He beat a weight drained Jones...lost to an old Hopkins...nuff said
job biscuit (tarver another alphabet champ)!!!
eh eh!!!
-
Re: Where does Tarver rank all time?
He doesn't rank all-time. If you wanna put a top-30 list together for 175, he might crack it. Otherwise, he is maybe one notch above John Stracey, a guy who beat a great, but aging, fighter and not much else. He did beat him twice and a few other guys, so it's a nice career, but a clear notch or two below HOF consideration.
-
Re: Where does Tarver rank all time?
he ranks as one of the greatest ex-crackhead boxing champions of all time P4P absolutely!!!
-
Yeah I agree, Tarver doesn't rank all time. However he does remind me of Mr. Hankey on South Park.
-
Re: Where does Tarver rank all time?
I think Tarver might could crack the top 20 light heavyweights all time. Honestly, he's a good fighter who was at the right place at the right time to beat Roy Jones Jr.
He's not even in the same universe as Roy Jones Jr. when it comes to all time rankings.
-
Re: Where does Tarver rank all time?
Tarver does not come close to RJJ all time agreed but in his defence he was calling Jones out for years before before he got his shot.
-
Re: Where does Tarver rank all time?
That is a good question. I have absolutely no frigging idea. Win over Harding with incompetent ref was one of the worst beatings Ive seen. Don't think he gets enough credit at all for wins over Jones. Aside from that he's pretty much 'yeh yeh whatever man, take a number'.
Outstanding Commentator, just needs to not get caught on camera with that overly goofy smile so much.

Re: Where does Tarver rank all time?
I was in Oakland for the Ward vs. Bika fight, and Tarver was there with Bernstein commentating. I am not joking when I say that ONE fan walked up to Tarver and shook his hand.
Thats it. No one else cared in the least.
Few years ago in Sacramento Raul Marquez got A LOT more fan attention at the fights.
So did Lennox Lewis, but that goes without sayin as he was THE heavyweight champ for a while.
Basically what I'm saying is people don't like and/or don't care much about Tarver.
-
Re: Where does Tarver rank all time?
Literally nowhere. He was a good fighter, not close to a great one.
-
Re: Where does Tarver rank all time?
I like Tarver, great career. I don't think he's far off HOF consideration.Arguably beat Roy Jones 3 times, has some other impressive wins too. Ok not at the level of Jones Jr or Hopkins but he's got to be on a par with Diego Coralles, Castillo, Hatton etc.
-
He ranks about like Oliver McCall to be honest...he threw 1 lucky punch and hit pay dirt. He wasn't consistent enough to be highly rated.
Hell Roy beat him in the first fight but Tarver was just going to bitch til he got a rematch.
I would have LOVED to see a prime Bob Foster fight Tarver.

haha YES !
Thats a bit harsh though as McCall was largely a one hit wonder. I'd say Tarver ranks similiar to Michael Moorer, a touch less.
Bob Foster would have kicked his ass, as would Dwight Muhammad Qawi.

They were like hey look its Mason Dixon!

Re: Where does Tarver rank all time?
Nowhere close to the top 100 of all time. That's about it.

He's not done yet, if he beats Green, thats a nice little win. He could pull some George Foreman type second career out, you never know. ;D

Sure, but still not enough to come close to the top 100 ;)

Re: Where does Tarver rank all time?
I am absolutely convinced that he is the 154th best boxer of all time.

Tarver was better than McCall.
He was consistently one of the very best at 175lbs. He beat Jones Jr 3 times in my book. He avenged his losses to Johnson and Harding and beat Clinton Woods and Griffin.
He was the unisputed champ, I think he won about 5 world titles in that weight class in all, a 3 time world champ.
He's far above Oliver McCall. He ranks with Coralles, Castillo and Hatton imo, at his best, was the number 1 in his weight class, and even after losing, went back and regained hist title.
-
Re: Where does Tarver rank all time?
Antonio Tarver was terrible against Eric Harding in there 1st fight, he basically quit in the last round looking for a way out. He's lucky he lost that fight and didn't go on to fight RJJ at that point in RJJ's career.
There's many Light Heavyweight's who were better than Antonio Tarver.
-
Re: Where does Tarver rank all time?
I like Tarver far better as an announcer then I ever have as a fighter. His main claim to fame was knocking out RJJ, but other than that, his career has been fairly unremarkable. In re: All-time, just for beating Jones Jr. he should make the top 25 somewhere as a light-heavyweight, but overall I don't see him getting close to the top 100.

How the fuck ANYONE can think Tarver won the first fight with Roy is confounding, and utterly puzzling.
Roy won the fight CLEARLY.
It was just the first time anyone had gotten Roy against the ropes and done some work.
Tarver won 4 rounds and it was surprising, but he faded in the last two rounds like he always does and Roy outgutted him and beat him.

Tell me that this is really not a comparison you think their might be between them...
Tarvers a good boxer. I personally don't like him...
All time list wow! it's really hard to tell.
For starters he's still active.
I would guess all time somewhere between 250-300. ???

well caparison as being the GUY that beat the GUY, buster douglas was that guy, but he sucked, duran was that guy but he is one of the greats, so what i am saying is, is tarver just a guy that sucks that beat the guy, or is he the guy that beat the guy and goes down ranked, at least at lhw, but i see majority agree he doesn't

Do you think he's a borderline HOF candidate Mick?
I think a lot of people hate on him and so underestimate him. But he was a slick, tough fighter in his prime. Avenged all of his losses, won world titles 3 times, never been stopped. Even gave Chad Dawson some decent tests at age 38 or something.
I think he's a good example of someone who came back from early adversity and carved out a successful career that looked very unlikely indeed a few years earlier.

He really didn't have long at the top though Bilbo, and he's not even ranked in the top 20 in the Light Heavyweight division.
But then again there has been some questionable, fighters in the HOF so who knows.

He's not fighting at light heavy any more though. I think he's done as much as guys like Castillo, Coralles and Hatton. Some of them might be fringe HOF considerations, Hatton most likely I'd guess considering Maguigan got in.

Re: Where does Tarver rank all time?
I can't rank Tarver as a top LH compared to past champs, he is just lacking the credentials to even be considered a top fighter let alone a fringe Hall Of Fame Candidate as a fighter.
I think he's a great commentator though and it's early in that career and he will only get better if they keep him around.
There are some announcers in the Hall Of Fame who never laced up a glove, I don't feel he has a chance as a fighter alone but down the road some years he could get in for announcing plus he has some titles under his belt to help.
