Calzaghe's win over B-Hop looks better all the time.......
Hopkins had to use ever dirty trick in the book to stay in his fight with Calzaghe.
I know it was a split desion but I though JC won by a clear 4 or 5 rounds.
I know it will piss some people off but B-Hop is making Calzaghe's win look better with every fight.;D

Re: Calzaghe's win over B-Hop looks better all the time.......
This is very true! Joe definitely won and it was not easy when your fighting a spoiler like Hopkins.
-
Shame he didnt fight froch. But then he wanted to keep his o.

I'm aware of who got the decision, but I've watched it a couple of times and I always have Hopkins winning by a round. I don't want to start an old debate though, I was just being a jackass.
The victory does look very good for Calzaghe, regardless of how disputed it was.
-
Re: Calzaghe's win over B-Hop looks better all the time.......
i had B-Hop beating the coke snorter by about 3 or 4 points (including the extra point for the knockdown), so all B-Hop's wins do is go on to show how the only way he ever really "loses" a fight is if the judges decide to screw him over and take if from him, like they did in his fights against Taylor and Calzaghe ;)
-
Re: Calzaghe's win over B-Hop looks better all the time.......
I had Hopkins beating slapsy Joe. Butt hey, fair enough. Maybe Hopkins will let him ride in his limo at the HOF induction
Btw Segundo Mercado beat Hopkins up worse then any other. Somewhere he was yelling at the tube lastnight ;D

Re: Calzaghe's win over B-Hop looks better all the time.......
Check this out for pure nerdness. In Hopkins last 9 fights he landed LESS on Calzaghe than any other fighter ( for the record - Calzaghe hit him more than any othr fighter too).
This is Hopkins punches landed.
Hopkins - Taylor 130/317 (35%)
Hopkins - Tarver 133/417 (32%)
Hopkins - Winky 152/640 (24%)
Hopkins - Calza 127/468 (27%)
Hopkins - Pavlik 172/530 (32%)
Hopkins - Ornel 205/497 (41%)
Hopkins - Jones 185/526 (35%)
Hopkins - Pascal 171/445 (38%)
Hopkins - Pascal 131/409 (32%)
Fact.

What every way you want to look at it Calzaghe gave Hopkins a hard fight at worse or beat him by a good few rounds at best.;D

wouldn't call it much of a win, a decision sure, but no win, he wont be remembered that poor undefeated fellow

i don't feel like he did enough, a close win over b hop is the only thing that really stands out on his resume, and thats it, its not gonna do shit for taylor is it? nope nor is it gonna do anything for calzaghe, he left boxing when he could have built a strong legacy, but he decided to play it safe

Calzaghe should make a comeback. I mean why not? Wonder if he's tempted

He retired at exactly the right time. He said himself that he was starting to slip.

Re: Calzaghe's win over B-Hop looks better all the time.......
I'm just producing the stats. It's just an observation.
I'm not stating Calzaghe was better than Hopkins... although he did make Hopkins bring the sport into disrepute with some of the most disgraceful cheating ever witnessed in a ring. But still...

I totally agree, I used to be one of Calzaghe's biggest critics, but that all changed after he destroyed Jeff Lacy and finished his career moving up in weight to fight Hopkins & Jones Jr.. Too bad Calzaghe, didn't get more credit during his career for what he was able to accomplish, but anyway you look at it, 46-0 ain't too shabby, and those of us who know boxing will always give him the credit he deserves.
BTW, I also agree that Calzaghe, clearly beat Hopkins, by 4 or 5 rounds, name someone who's been able to accomplish that. :)
-
Re: Calzaghe's win over B-Hop looks better all the time.......
Yep thats gotta be his best win, out of the 3-4 good fighters he's faced in 46 fights. ;D
-
Re: Calzaghe's win over B-Hop looks better all the time.......
I think this is right!
I wonder sometimes if BHOP wished he had that fight back. He fought like he had no faith in his own stamina.
Now that is to take nothing away from Clazaghe who I thought won nine rounds of that fight. But I do think BHOP matured in his understanding of his 40+ body after that (if that makes sense).
Of course all that matters is what happened so I'll stop speculating. A casae like this is why one cannot really rate a fighter until after hyis compeition has retired.
-
Re: Calzaghe's win over B-Hop looks better all the time.......
I'm stunned how many good posters here had BHOP winning that fight. Do I REALLY have to torture myself and go back and watch again? I thought slapping deserved more credit than the 1-2-headrush :)

Agreed. That was Joes first fight in the States and in Vegas no less and he horsed around for a third of the fight and still won.
-
Re: Calzaghe's win over B-Hop looks better all the time.......
I also had B-Hop beating Joe Calzaghe by 1 point, i also don't agree with punchstats all the time. I mean i really can't recall Joe Calzaghe really landing a telling blow all night, i mean out of the 200+ punches he supposedly landed, how many were effective clean shots ?
B-Hop also floored Joe Calzaghe, and almost knocked him down again in another round. Give me the effective straight right hand leads of B-Hop anyday, over Joe Calzaghe's windmill punches that hit arms and air.

Give me a fucking break.
Calzaghe BARELY won that fight against Bernard IF he won it at all.
And he got knocked down.
Hopkins win last night makes Hopkins look better and NO ONE ELSE.
Fuck Calzaghe. He's a fucking disgrace.

Calzaghe's best wins are over young lions like Jeff Lacy and Mikkell Kessler.
NOT barely winning a controversial split decision against a post 40 Bernard and dominating a totally shot Roy Jones.
There was little glory or honor in those victories. Especially the Jones win.
-
Re: Calzaghe's win over B-Hop looks better all the time.......
I agree with Hulk to an extent. If Cazlaghes win over Hopkins now looks impressive based on his recent outings then the converse regarding Roy Jones must also be true. That Jones dropped Calzaghe and took him 12 rounds with that chin is making Joe look pretty embarrassing I think.
Quit at the right time....

now tally up how many of those "shots" that Calzaghe "landed" were on the gloves and arms
and then add up how many shots B-Hop landed flush

the only thing you can applaud White Nose Joe on in that fight is that he finally gained the courage to come out the closet and grind up on Hopkins

You're right Calzaghe should have played it like B-Hop, beat up blownup Welterweights to make a name for himself early in his career.
You can argue who won the fight, but that whiteboy didn't make it easy for B-Hop. THis whole B-Hop won 4 or 5 more rounds is ridiculous.

No Bilbo, you see Joe Calzaghe in his INFINITE compassion and greatness, ALLOWED Roy Jones to go the distance with him. He clearly could have taken him out with a single shot at any time he wanted. Cus we all know what a real nice guy Joe is and how much of a devastating power puncher he was late in his career...;D:rolleyes:

as always it works both ways

Yes it goes both ways homey. The same people shitting on JC, his resume, and fighting ability, mysteriously excuse Hopkins for everything else. ;)

Here is one major difference. BHOP really did wreck the middles from 1994-2004 didn't he? Was there any obvious guy he didn't face? With JC at 168 the story just isn't the same.
-
Re: Calzaghe's win over B-Hop looks better all the time.......
It was a convincing Calzaghe win. A poor first few rounds, but practically a clean sweep thereafter. What it shows is that Hopkins has either taken fighters out of their weight class or purposely chosen relatively low output opponents.
When faced with someone like Calzaghe, Hopkins simply cannot match the output. Calzaghe beats Hopkins at any stage in Hopkins career.
Calzaghe gets underrated on forums. He is stylistic hell for practically anyone he faces.

Ottke, Liles, Jones, Nunn, Echols off the top of my head. Look, the notion that you cleaned out a division when there is another unbeaten guy 300 miles away is sort of silly.
And before the excuse making starts? I don't care. One either fights the fights or one doesn't.

Otke wouldn't go near Calzaghe, Jones Jr was a LHW all the time Calzaghe was a SMW, likewise Nunn was a CW/LHW. The Echols fight could have come off, but he was pretty much done by the time he reached SMW.
You are looking for holes that don't exist. Calzaghe kept his division clean just as Hopkins did, it's just that Calzaghes biggest wins were not against LMW's moving up.
