Hopkins vs. Dawson on HBO PPV Oct 15th (Official Sat Night chat thread)
:action:
October 15
At Los Angeles (HBO PPV): Bernard Hopkins vs. Chad Dawson, 12 rounds, for Hopkins' Ring/WBC light heavyweight title; Antonio DeMarco vs. Jorge Linares, 12 rounds, for vacant WBC lightweight title; Kendall Holt vs. Danny Garcia, 12 rounds, WBC/IBF junior welterweight title eliminator.
First off, this fight figures to be a candidate for "Stinker of the Year" honors, a fight only a boxing purist could love. (I hope i'm wrong) Two minutes of each round will be spent by Hop & Chad posing/staring at each other, with the 46 year old Hopkins initiating most of the action and Dawson trying to counter.
Fortunately for the fans sake, there's 2 good fights on the undercard: Antonio DeMarco vs. Jorge Linares, for the vacant WBC lightweight title, and Kendall Holt vs. Danny Garcia, a WBC/IBF junior welterweight title eliminator.
So it may end up being a good night of boxing, i'll go with Hopkins by SD, if I can stay awake long enough to see it. ;)
Who ya got and why?

re: Hopkins vs. Dawson on HBO PPV Oct 15th (Offical Sat Night chat thread)
I have no rationale for this and I'm almost certain to be wrong, but Dawson by SD based on his work rate. Just a hunch I have, but I think Hopkins might look a bit old in this one.
Hopkins should beat him though and he likely will.
-
If Hopkins wins then what does he do next?? Cruiserweight? Tarver?
-
re: Hopkins vs. Dawson on HBO PPV Oct 15th (Offical Sat Night chat thread)
It's an interesting fight. To a certain extent, based on styles, I like Dawson because volume and athleticism give Hopkins problems (see Calzaghe fight). Also, Hopkins dodged Dawson a couple of years ago, maybe not a blatant dodge, but he didn't want to fight him. On the other hand, Hopkins has had better recent form and Dawson tends to take naps during fights. I want Dawson to win, but I"m sort of leaning toward Bhop. It's tough. At the end of the day, I can see this fight not being an entertaining fight to watch, unfortunately.

I would like to see him fight Cloud if he wants to keep going. One thing about Cloud is that he is going to mix.

I believe Dawson could get a decision, he's got the physical tools to do it, Chad's main problem will be overcoming the mental aspects of the fight, Hopkins is a master at getting inside his opponents head.

Hops should retire after he gets his ass kicked by Dawson. He'd done enough insomnia curing so he should move on.. this fuckin conman.. He aint no throwback fighter like he claims to be..

I believe Toney is jealous, Hopkins is still keeping himself in shape, winning championships and making good money and Toney is a has been.

I figure Hop-Chad will be one of those hard to score snoozers that both Pugs will think they won. Then there will be a rematch, and Hop-Chad III, 4 & 5, and boxing fans will begin committing suicide in droves...

Quotes from a former *proven* washed up great who was last seen in a spoon fest with the grand daddy of mma and trying to convince fans the weighing what you did a lifetime ago translates to being relevant once again.
And I love Toney..I do.
Dawson has all the tools, always has. But he is more often lip service in delivery and tends to take long vacations. I bet the farm on Hopkins setting traps all night and having Dawson on a leash leading to a wide win on the cards. Dawson doesn't speak work rate.
-
re: Hopkins vs. Dawson on HBO PPV Oct 15th (Offical Sat Night chat thread)
Toney would knock Hopkins out even now at a CW of 190.
I think Dawson wins this by decision. Throwing 1000 punches in a bout is more than enough to nullify Hopkins 20 punches a round. Dawson will outhustle the old man.

If James Toney win, then Toney.
If Tarver get a chance at a heavyweight title and win(by a gun), then Tarver.;D
My pick, rematch with Glen Johnson after he defeat Bute!!!
U heard it first from "Ant Live"

re: Hopkins vs. Dawson on HBO PPV Oct 15th (Offical Sat Night chat thread)
I say dawson does it, hopkins beats people in thier head before the fight. Dawson seems a little slow iq wise and a lot of b hops mental tricks look to be going right over dawsons head. Outside of the headgames the crap about chad being stronger, faster, etc is true and will be the reason he wins i think.

I totally dissagree with you. Hopkins to me is a massive inspiration. He is 46 years old and ranked number one in his devision. Hes ranked number one in his devision for a reason, because he is better than everyone else. He has great counter punching and does not waste any energy, a very clever ringmaster. I think he beat Pascal the first time round as well.
What can you say about him if he beats Dawson. That will be a win over the two other top fighter in the devision. A great fighter who I would put in the top ten pound for pound boxers.

re: Hopkins vs. Dawson on HBO PPV Oct 15th (Offical Sat Night chat thread)
Dawson would have been favourite a couple of years ago, I think Chad should win this, I hope I am wrong and Hopkins wins. We get to watch this free on Box Nation!!!

re: Hopkins vs. Dawson on HBO PPV Oct 15th (Offical Sat Night chat thread)
Why anyone would pick a KO in this fight I dont know, boggles the mind predicting that.
Interesting that the majority of fans on boxing sites favour Hopkins yet the bookies make Dawson a slight favourite.
-
re: Hopkins vs. Dawson on HBO PPV Oct 15th (Offical Sat Night chat thread)
This is a bad style match up for hopkins. Dawson knows how to use his range very well. He has a very solid chin, but he has no style really. He comes at you the same way with the same punches.
Dawson will carry the cards and Jim Lampley, and Larry merchant will remind us hte whole fight why we should not pay for primetime boxing.
Funny how they sell us on being sold for every PPV these days.
We should all note that the real loser in this fight, no matter whose hand they raise at the end, would be the boxing fans. They lost them by making this fight "exclusive" to people who can afford it.

If you don't want to pay for it, just avoid learning what happened and watch it on the free replay *one week later.*
This is a total 50/50 for me -- I guess I'd edge it to Dawson; but like someone said, that would have been an easy pick for me two years ago and is not at all now. Might be an SD.
Clearly no KO either way.

re: Hopkins vs. Dawson on HBO PPV Oct 15th (Offical Sat Night chat thread)
Weird thing is that 2 years ago B Hop would have a better chance as he was younger but he seems to be getting better or at least staying the same high level whereas other fighters come and go. B Hop is an amazing man.
-
re: Hopkins vs. Dawson on HBO PPV Oct 15th (Offical Sat Night chat thread)
This is a 50/50 fight.
Dawson has the speed, size and skills to cause Hopkins alot of problems and if his mind is right, he is a very tough fighter to beat.
Hopkins has the IQ, dirty tactics and skills himself to take Dawson out of his rhythm and outbox him.
Two of my favourite fighters and i can't pick a winner. May the best man win.

Why are quoting that waste of talent ?
If Toney had half the discipline Hopkins had, his career would of been far better.
His opinion on Hopkins is invalid. He's just jealous of X because while Hopkins career continues to be successful, Toney's career is at an all time low.

A fat ass Toney knocks out Hopkins ? Toney can't even make 190, not without cheating anyway.
Throwing 1000 punches against Hopkins is alot easier said than done, just ask Calzaghe.
Dawson hasn't got the conditioning Joe had either, he has to outbox Hopkins and use his superior speed to win.

I agree.
Like others have said, I think the biggest x-factor in the fight is Dawson's psyche. Hopkins can get in an opponents head like no one else, and that could be the difference in this fight.

re: Hopkins vs. Dawson on HBO PPV Oct 15th (Offical Sat Night chat thread)
The more I think about this fight, the more I believe it could go 1 of two ways, either Chad or Bernard wins a boring SD, or for the 1st time in his Pro Career, Dawson fights like he's got a pair, puts on his best performance ever, and wins a clearcut UD, possibly even stopping Hopkins.
Just sayin' at 46 Hop has to have lost a step, you can't fool father time, if for once in his career, Dawson fights up to his full potential and 3 minutes of every round, it's possible that he could dominate this fight.

I think hopkins. Dawson lacks the ability to go the extra mile when he is pushed and I garetee that Hopkins will put him in that situation.

Just sayin' Chad has the skill/ability, to win this fight if he puts it all together and doesn't let Hop fight his fight. I question whether Hopkins could go 12 rounds with a focused, younger, stronger guy like Dawson who makes him work hard every round. I do agree with you however, about Chad being willing to go the extra mile, that remains to be seen.

I may sound like a broken record but I cant see Dawson winning. Hopkins always finds a way to his opponent, irritates them into fighting his fight. The only way I see Dawson winning is if he is on Hopkins presurising him every second, in and out without commiting to power punches coz thats when Bhop counters you. Slow him down by making him work every second of every round. I just dont see Bhop letting him get his own way. I could be wrong but the only fight I have seen Bhop lose is Calzaghe. He won because of his stupid work rate, high punch output and ability to adapt.
I have not seen Jermain Taylor beat him. How did he win the fight.

re: Hopkins vs. Dawson on HBO PPV Oct 15th (Offical Sat Night chat thread)
I think that firing Manny is a clear indicator that Dawson is not prepared to fight any way he has not already become accustomed too, and def not looking to attack a human truth test like Hopkins. If he goes aggresive it's foreign to him and Hopkins is no place to experiment at all...and if he coasts and does as he has he's not going to out Hopkins Hopkins. I've warmed to this match big time!

Both of Hop's losses to Taylor were somewhat controversial, especially the 2nd one. The pattern in the 2 fights were the same, Taylor busier in many of the earlier rounds, and Hop coming on strong in the later rounds, but falling just short on the judges scorecards. Not a hell of a lot of action in either fight.

Hopkins will try to get control early, if Chad lets him do that, he's just fucked, and there's just no way Dawson is going to outbox or out-think the old master.
Chad's best bet is to be the aggressor, pressure Hop and make a war out of it for 12 rounds or however long it lasts.

re: Hopkins vs. Dawson on HBO PPV Oct 15th (Offical Sat Night chat thread)
Bump..
Let's get some discussions going on this fight and the 2 decent undercard fights. ;)
-
re: Hopkins vs. Dawson on HBO PPV Oct 15th (Offical Sat Night chat thread)
The fight of the night is Danny Garcia versus Kendal Holt. Garcia has been moving up in the rankings, but this is his biggest test by far. Each has some pop. It's really a big fight for both guys. Doesn't the winner becomes the mandatory for Soto?
As for the main event, Hopkins could put on a boxing master class or Dawson could pick up where Calzaghe left off and beat Hopkins on volume and speed. Dawson needs to outjab Hopkins to win in my opinion. Hopkins needs to maintain his stamina and fight in spurts to win. It's a tough fight to call. On some days, I see Dawson winning and on others, Hopkins.

re: Hopkins vs. Dawson on HBO PPV Oct 15th (Offical Sat Night chat thread)
On boxnation we have degales european title fight then cleverly v bellew and then the american card

i doubt ill stay up and watch it all but it should be nice none the less
the hopkins card is rammed with names isnt it

Does anyone find it a little odd that Hopkins hasn't talked much trash in the weeks leading up to this fight? He's been more quiet than usual...

I havn't really noticed Rant-cat, but then I try not to listen to much of Hopkins' bullshit. Hop usually hatches a mind game at the weigh-in, which is friday, i'll post a link to it if I can find one.
This might actually turn out to be a good fight, I believe it all depends on what version of Dawson shows up.

Could we please get a sticky and make this the fight thread for Saturday?
Thanks in advance.

re: Hopkins vs. Dawson on HBO PPV Oct 15th (Offical Sat Night chat thread)
Going with Dawson by decision. Chads speed and work rate will be the difference; Which is what has given Bhop trouble in the past with the likes of Taylor, Calzaghe and the 1st Jones fight.
-
re: Hopkins vs. Dawson on HBO PPV Oct 15th (Offical Sat Night chat thread)
I think B Hop is under appreciated, for a fighter to do what he is doing at his age is unbelievable. If he wins then people try to play down the opponent and if he does not do well then they say he should retire. I hope he wins this fight even though he should be beaten by the bigger, taller, younger, hungrier, quicker and fitter challenger.

It will be a major win for his legacy in my opinion. Dawson was the "man" at 175 for a couple of years until he lost to Pascal really.

Hop is amazing and deserves credit for what he's accomplished, the thing is, i've been watching "X" back before he was a middleweight champion, and frankly, i'm a little tired of watching him fight. Having said that, i'm sure i'll be hunting a stream to watch the fight saturday..:-\
