Do boxers fight for fans?
People saying Haye should fight another one for the fans.....but do boxers fight for the fans?
It looks to me like boxers take fights that make them as much money as possible which I guess is what everyone would do?
If you challenge yourself to be the best in the world and you reach world level status you will earn alot of money, if you then fight the best in the division you will further prove tyourself an earn more money.
But it seems when you are a world champ you dont have to fight the best in the division you can be a bit more picky so choose the fights that will earn you more money over a fight the fans want to see?
So does any boxer fight for the fans?

Re: Do boxers fight for fans?
Well Im glad my first article has been so popular so Im replying myself just to make sure I get one!
-
Re: Do boxers fight for fans?
:) ill help you out bro
i dont think a boxer will ever box unless he has to or wants to
so David haye wont come out of retirement just coz the fans want to see him again
a boxer might fight in a certain place or against a certain oppopnent or at a certain time to please the fans whilst he is still active
p.s. if you want to start a thread that gets a lot of comments you should call it something like
"Khan is scared of Cotto" or something and make up some crazy story about something completely unrelated he said in an interview once
or anything with pac or mayweather in the title
-
Re: Do boxers fight for fans?
No it's a silly naive notion.
As you've said - Every boxer strives for his best money option. If they can't get that they are matched with fighters they're expected to beat. Simple as.
Remember Ricky "man of the people" Hatton had one last fight "for the fans" in Manchester. It was PPV. The opponent was a retired lightweight coming off a loss.
a) Ricky still made millions from his "fight for the fans"
b) It was a gimme (meant to be)

Re: Do boxers fight for fans?
Whenever a promoters says "this is the fight the fans wanted" it means it's gonna sell shitloads.

you think he was poorly on purpose?
Not sure what you mean. You mean he was ill on the night of the fight?
He still won easy just had a little wobble. Nothing to serious.

Re: Do boxers fight for fans?
I think fighters have to wanna take the physical abuse, not because of the "fans"
"Fans" pay the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ million revenue for fights.
So of course we need to be schmoozed and have token "I fight for the fans" mentions so we keep the revenue going.
Its all about US, think about it. The sponsors pay big bucks, why? because us fans buy the product. We buy what everyone is selling in a boxing promotion. We buy the good guy and wanna see him win. We buy the bad guy so we wanna see him get sparked. We buy the goods and services, we read the articles, we post on the forums etc..
So inside I feel any athlete could care less about the fan, but realize the millions of people that they dont know are essential to their wallet and way of life

yeah appartently he was ill on the night of the fight
talking about the wobble i think rickys punch resistence was going a long before that fight
after the mausser (spelling!) fight the only fights he was in where he wasnt rocked were castillo and mallinagi (spelling!) and mallinagi doesnt really count

Re: Do boxers fight for fans?
just to add to that in all his early fights I hadnt seen him ever hurt at all
he went down against Magee but wasnt hurt

Re: Do boxers fight for fans?
If I was Haye, I don't think I could quit yet. For me, becoming a British boxing legend would be my goal, I would want people debating how good I was in pubs up and down the country, 50 years after I retired. Nobody will remember David Haye, he has gone out with a wimper.
Fair play though, he probably know his limitations and that Vitali would dispose of him inside 9 minutes. And he's achieved his goal of becoming a very rich man, with his faculties in tact.
-
Re: Do boxers fight for fans?
I'd rather see Haye comeback against Tyson Fury than Vitali. Pointless fight IMO. However, it certainly wont be pointless to Haye or Vitali because it's another HUGE payday

Not sure about that. Magee rocked him with a shot that was even worse than the knockdown. Ricky grabbed him to stop going down. Also Vince Phillips hit with a shot that clearly hurt him, Hatton said he saw stars and didn't know whether he was in the MEN or Las Vegas at that point.
However, that's all part of boxing. He had a solid chin. NO disgrace in getting ironed by Pac and Floyd duffed him up.
-
Re: Do boxers fight for fans?
This aint no movie or a fairytale. Fighters fight for themselves ... Not for tha fans lol c'mon..
When they say that they are fighting for their family, its bullshit too.ultimately, they are fighting for themselves. Lets live in the real world.

Yeah I agree. If that was a Hatton pre Tyszu he would have bulldozed through him for a stoppage.

Re: Do boxers fight for fans?
basketball players dont play ball for the fans nor does actors act for the fans. They do it because they are good at what they do and it brings them wealth. Why would a boxer take punches for a bunch of people they dont even know. That some silly ass shit. Everybody is out for thrmselves.

Re: Do boxers fight for fans?
Being a boxer is a career, a way for them to support their living. I don't believe anyone would do that as a hobby ........ unless they're a sadist/masochist.
The only way I see him fighting for the fans is if he has the option of two fights with almost the same risk, career advancement opportunity and monetary reward. Then, maybe, he'll go for what the fans are clamoring for.
-
Re: Do boxers fight for fans?
Prize fighting what's the prize MONEY i no a fair few pro fighter's yes they like to fight but they like money yes you have fan's but you fight for yourself boxing is not a team sport.;D

So no-one does boxing as a hobby? that rubbish there are lots of people that go training and sparring to keep fit...

Re: Do boxers fight for fans?
I think in the case of someone like Hatton, at heart he was a romantic and he wanted it for himself and all the glory. In the case of someone like Mayweather, no. It is all calculated and cynical.
Hatton fought anyone who was ranked near or above and fell short, Mayweather doesn't come close to that level of heart.

We are talking about professional boxing in here.
For someone who does it for training and sparring to keep fit, would there be any fans involved? Look at the title of this thread ......

If there is any fan involvement then we are dealing with boxers here who does it as a sport? Not those who only do it for training and sparring to keep fit. I didn't completely close out the possibility that some might do it as a hobby hence the statement "unless they're a sadist/masochist". And the statement I made above is an opinion, not a fact, hence the word "I don't believe ....".
Now, do you know of any boxer who does it for a hobby?

Look closer.
He was hurt by some Costa Rican fella in the first round of their fight. He was badly hurt (by his own admission) by Vince Phillips and he was hurt by Ben Tackie (again by his own admission). He spent the second half of the Collazo fight on queer street aswell. Mayweather knocked him out, Lazcano rocked him and then Pacquaio nearly killed him
Magee definitely hurt him in that fight. Don't think it was in the same round as the knockdown though.
In summary, he never had a great chin.

He had a solid world-class chin though. He was never Wayne McCullough or Oliver McCall, but with his come forward style you are guaranteed to get HIT. Hard.
Much better fighters than him have suffered KO's.

That is harsh to say Hatton did not have a good chin, anyone who could take the punches of Tszyu flush countless times and not get dropped must have some resistance. I think it is fair to say that punch resistance did go down the longer he was fighting, so Hatton would probably have lost the fight he had with Tszyu, if it was the Hatton that fought Pacquia in his last ever fight.

Boxers fight for different reasons. Most have more than one reason for fighting. There are some fighters that fight only for money (but most of the are opponents). I know fighters that fight for prestige, money and fame. Many fight because they believe they can win. It amazes me how many fighters talk about being champ, as though they mean it. Some fight because they like to fight but not that many. You can tell how much a fighter likes to fight by how often and how hard he spars.
