Who is the greatest person ever in the history of humankind?
Who is the greatest Man (and in the interest of fairness I include woman in this) in your opinion to ever have existed on earth.
My vote would go to Leonardo De Vinci, because he was the greatest painter of all time with his famous pictures such as Mona Lisa, the last Supper, and Adam touching God. He inspired other great artists after him. He also conceptualised a helicopter, a tank, concentrated solar power, a calculator, and many other things. He was a man way a head of his times in terms of anatomy and engineering.

I totally agree with all the priase you give to Davinci. However, I find it difficult to place him as the greatest man of all time, matter of fact, I wouldn't be able to opalce nobody in that position as there is too many various fields of researches involved and too many persons played a vital role in some key moment. DVC has to be there though.

It's impossible to say, a shortlist would probably include, but not limited to:
Einstein- nearly everything we know on major science calculations stemmed from him, considered one of the smartest people ever
Steven Hawkins- debilitating illness, yet can still speak via a computer he invented (I think) and has an incredible brain.
Borlaug (sp?)- don't know much about him, but I know he invented strains of crops that were disease resistant and that alone saved billions of lives in the third world and other places.
Jesus- lived twice for starters, he's got to be bookies favourite for top spot
Newton- Gravity amongst other things
Columbus- discovered the world was not flat and discovered stuff
The guy who invented fire should be in there
As should the guy who invented the wheel
I could go on showing off my poor knowledge of incredible people, but I won't.

If it is not Bon Scott or Lemmy, then it would have to be Dee Schneider for writing "I Am, I'm Me."

I thought exactly the same.
Plus, if you count starvation as an achievement then Victoria Beckham is not far behind Jesus in greatness.

Re: Who is the greatest person ever in the history of humankind?
I couldn't have only one as you have people doing things in different fields and they are all significant. My list of 10 would include the following and in no particular order. My choices are obviously subjective too and totally enshrouded with my own particular tastes.
1) Albert Einstein
2) William Shakespeare
3) Noam Chomsky
4) George Orwell
5) James Toney
6) Richard Dawkins
7) Kenny Dalglish
8) David Bowie
9) Steven Hawkings
10) Most definitely me

Re: Who is the greatest person ever in the history of humankind?
I don't know why Bowie has a smiley next to him, it isn't a man love thing.

"great" is different for people, but although IM not a Christian I cant think of anyone who is more famous, more loved, than Jesus Christ of Bethlehem.

That would be Yeshua Ben Yoseph then; Yod, Shin, Vav, Ayin :).

well thats an excellent point bcuz I read several times that a Yeshua bin Pantera was a famous rabbi at that time and may have been confused with Jesus if he was really 1 person or not, could be a mixture of 2 people that took mythical proportions by word of mouth.
-
Re: Who is the greatest person ever in the history of humankind?
(text)A mythological being can't be killed. Jesus Christ is a mythological being. Yeshu ben Pantera was a man, a Jewish healer with amazing powers, and he was killed, stoned to death along with his five disciples by Jewish religious authorities all by themselves, no Romans involved whatsoever. Yeshu was then hung on a
tree as per Jewish Law, which Paul refers to in Gal 3:13.
The real story of Jesus is the story of Yeshu ben Pantera and Miriam ben Stada his mother Miriam the hairdresser who adulterous affair with Joseph ben Pantera, a Roman mercenary, produced Yeshu who learned magic arts in Egypt and "led many astray" according to the Talmud where one can find this information so carefully hidden away from Gentile eyes.

Re: Who is the greatest person ever in the history of humankind?
I believe Jesus was a real person, but I think word of mouth and religious fabrication has made him extremely overrated. Probably an extremely nice chap and one of the first to have a go at the bankers, but when people start talking about magical powers and returning from the dead, I think they are getting a little carried away.
-
Re: Who is the greatest person ever in the history of humankind?
Yeishu ha Notzri, Jesus or Jesua, or Yeshua or Joshua ben Pantera or Pentera or Pandera or Pandira, there are even several first-century Christian references to this supposed miracle worker.
If he was the Teacher of Righteousness referred to by the Dead Sea Scrolls, as some have suggested, his impact on the movement towards Jewish reform was considerable. And if he was the Teacher of Righteousness, it would answer a lot of interesting questions, such as the scattered first century Christian and Talmudic references to a miracle worker named Yeishu ha Notzri, known to first-century Christians as Jesus or Jesua ben Pantera. Among them are a quote from Origen, saying that his arch-rival Celsus had heard from a Jew in Jerusalem that "Jesus Ben Pantera" was born of Mary as the result of a rape by a Roman soldier named Pantera, and had borne the baby in secret (most scholars now regard this claim to be a first-century legend resulting from misinterpretation of the facts).

Right, fictional characters don't qualify.

Another person I would throw into the equation would be military warriors like Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan.
On the opposite end of the equation Mother Teresa.

i agree, by alot of standards (things like praying to jesus) i think people are over the top..
but by all means he could have been a spiritual and religious prophet to the same extend as mohammed or any buddha, moses etc.. but he is just that, a prophet. people make this guy really important and say hes the son of god, worship him like so.. but i thought all men were made in gods image and that we are all the son of god.. this guy could be simply some kind of revolutionary that got mistreat

Yeshua ha Notzri and Yeshua bin Pandera. 2 rabbis whose life stories have been combined into ONE PERSON.

Of course the religious people comes first. But aside from them, I'll pick F. D. Roosevelt. He not only saved the U.S. from depression, but more importantly, he saved the world from Axis domination. I wouldn't want to be saluting 'Hail Hitler, Jr.' everytime I pass around the brat.

On the opposite end of the equation Mother Teresa.
“[Mother Teresa] was not a friend of the poor. She was a friend of poverty. She said that suffering was a gift from God. She spent her life opposing the only known cure for poverty, which is the empowerment of women and the emancipation of them from a livestock version of compulsory reproduction.”
― Christopher Hitchens
So maybe not so opposite after all

Yup, he did an impossible job of rallying your country amidst impossible German blitz, where others simply just folded up and succumbed to awesome German power. Bullet for bullet, bomb for bomb, and technology for technology, Churchill answered Hitler without flinching. Amazing fella indeed.

Stalin had a lot more to do with winning WWII than FDR or Churchill. And Pearl Harbor had more to do with ending the depression than any of FDR's atrocious keynsian programs and trampling of the constitution.

You're right, but then, don't forget, even without Russia, Americans could have finished the job in a day or two.
