Paul Williams Returning In January!?!
Paul Williams is planning on returning to the ring in January. Possible opponents are K9 Bundage or Carlos Molina. Either fight could be fireworks. And for the winner, possible big time, big money fights.
If you was in Paul's camp which fight would you take?
How do you see either fight going?
-
Re: Paul Williams Returning In January!?!
Bundrage is the much easier fight. He's all heart but he can't box and he's quite hittable.
I had hoped Mayorga would fight him soon.
-
Re: Paul Williams Returning In January!?!
As long as they don't put Paul in with a fighter who is a slick, quick moving southpaw then i think he can be alright. :)
-
Re: Paul Williams Returning In January!?!
let's hope it Molina. The guy deserves a big name fight. Very good boxer but lacks attention due to his low punching power.

You don't think Manny Steward helped him in his boxing skills?
By the way, the propose K9 vs Mayorga was pulled of the table already, I thought?

Paul Williams... who even cares
-
Re: Paul Williams Returning In January!?!
I find Mr Williams boring, to me he is a bit of
a hit it and hop it fighter.
Yes skillfull he can punch a bit, but his chin is
like glass, hit him on it and down he go's.?

The guy has had a strange career.

Are you using some weird form of sarcasm???

Re: Paul Williams Returning In January!?!
I'm with Hulk, I too feel the Bundrage fight is an easier win. If definitely like to see Molina get the opportunity because he deserves it, but if I'm advising P.Wil it's Bundrage all the way

Williams is far from boring.
You get a good fight with him everytime he fights because he isn't afraid to engage and is willing take some to give some.
The guy has also been stopped once against Martinez which was a perfectly well connected shot. No fighter around the weight class could take that and get up.
Besides that he's had his chin tested against the likes of Martinez ( first fight), Margarito, Cintron, Quintana and Matthysse who are good to decent punchers and he's done very well.
His chin is far from glass especially considering the amount of shots he takes every fight he's in.

I actually think Molina is the smarter fight for a guy coming off a knock out loss and a one-sided beating. Bundrage is the worse boxer, but he has some power and if I am looking out for WIlliams, I don't want to see his chin get tested again right away.
Molina is a better fighter than Bundrage, but he has no power. His high work-rate is what won him the fight against Cintron, but there is no way he'll out-work Williams.
If he takes the Molina fight and wins, his stock will rise a lot faster than if he beats Bundrage, and there is little chance of him getting hurt or knocked out.

Re: Paul Williams Returning In January!?!
I agree with some posters above.. If Williams wants a title, he needs to go for K9 at all costs. I can't believe a fighter like K9 is a titleholder in the first place.lol Paul needs to snatch that title away cuz K9 has no business getting anywhere near a title.. It brings down the belt's value.
I think he's done at the top though. It doesn't seem like he's willing to make adjustments and it's a bit too late for that anyways so might as well match him up carefully with foes who suits his style.
Win a title from K9, defend it once against a big name, and call it a day...
If he continues to fight big names with that wreckless style, he's in for more vicious knockout losses..

I agree. Winning a title will be the way to go. If Williams get a title and try to unify, he could be in for a big payday.
With Alvarez low output against Gomez, Williams work rate could beat him. Williams size and length over Cotto, I'll go with Williams beating Cotto too. And there's always a revenge factor in fighting Margarito. And I'm not counting Cintron out in beating Alvarez this weekend. Cintron and Williams got unfinished business.

Re: Paul Williams Returning In January!?!
All the hype that came with Williams, I was thinking
he was the second coming of Tommy Hearns.?
But he was no were near a Hearns, he is a good fighter
but no great one?
Just one more over hyped fighter very much so.;D:sheep:

I think too many are putting too much stock in the ko loss to Martinez. It was a perfect shot & anyone would have been out if hit by it. Williams has taken big shots from other fighters (including Martinez in the 1st fight) & withstood them. I think his chin is alright but I think he should stay away from southpaws.
I'd give Williams credit for facing either guy, I just think stylistically Bundrage is perfect for Williams

Why was there never another rematch with martinez?!

There was a rematch and he was viciously knocked out. His people don't want anything to do with Martinez anymore or as I say below, any other southpaw (see the Lara fight for an example). It would be suicide man. As far as Paul Williams, I'm not ready yet to say he is shot, but I will say that I would never bet on Paul against a southpaw. Seems to be his kriptonite. I am interested in seeing him with a orthodox fighter though. He wouldn't be a bad a choice as an opponent for Canelo right now.

Re: Paul Williams Returning In January!?!
One minutes Paul Williams was the flavour of the month and deadly challenger to Floyd after he beat Margarito and Martinez and then he is a boring fighter after being KO’ed by Sergio and winning a controversial decision in his last fight. Think he is some where in between and can win a world title and be a dangerous fighter if he is handled right.

Agree with above.
So paul has trouble with southpaws i would still like to see a third fight.
He beat martinez already he deserves another shot.
His promoters not doing very well in promoting paul to his full extent and i dont think a shot which would knock out a horse should propell martinez into this god like figure!
-
Arguably a lucky swinging flurry shot?
-
Re: Paul Williams Returning In January!?!
Yeah but Williams hasn't done himself any favours by looking awful & then getting the controversial decision over Lara. But I don't think he has slipped as far as some are suggesting. Just match him properly & stay away from southpaws
-
Williams always got hit. Southpaw or whatever. Go back and please watch his fights. Paul have no defense!!! Point blank!!! He love to brawl. Which would shorten his career.
Anyone with POWER, have a chance in beating Paul, since the glass been cracked by Martinez.

Listen Imp, Paul would at least have an argument for another shot with Martinez if he didn't look piss poor in his fight against Lara. Did you miss that fight? Most people thought he got a gift decision. If you lose a fight against Martinez in the knockout of the year, you have to win your back into contention before you get a another fight with him. Go out there and beat a few big names. Tall Paul hasn't done that yet.
The other thing you are ignoring is that HE doesn't want another shot. He is NOT clamoring for a third fight with Martinez. He hasn't called him out again. You may be literally the ONLY person clamoring for that fight.
Finally, I am a BIG fan of Tall Paul's. I would be rooting for him against really anyone out there at 154, but I was at the fight where Martinez knocked him out cold. It was NOT a lucky shot.
Paul Williams would be a great opponent for Saul Alvarez, Carlos Molina, K9 Bundrage or Alfredo Angulo. Those are the fights his people should try to make for him.
-
Or even a better trainer?

It's hard to teach an old dog new tricks. In my opinion, Tall Paul's handlers needs to pick his opponents wisely. I'd favor him over K9 or even Molina. Keep him away from Kirkland (southpaw). If he beat K9 or Molina, a fight with Alvarez would be big.
-
Cant keep keeping him away from southpaws whether he looks bad against them or not..throw him in the deep end and get this old dog to have some patience when throwing a 1000punches a round!
Paul needs to control his punishing.

Why is it when people that have shown a strong chin their entire career get knocked out by a haymaker they never saw coming they suddenly have a glass jaw?
May as well say Duran had a glass chin for being knocked out by Hearns

I couldn't agree more. Martinez is the only person to legitimately put Paul down, which he did twice by the way. Lara didn't put him down. Margarito didn't put him down. Winky didn't put him down. Paul just got nailed with a tough shot that night in Atlantic City.

I seriously had to wonder who you were refering to for a minute ;D Paul or Bundrage
Williams is an enigma, always has been. I've actually grown to, cough, like the guy ??? He and K-9 would be a good go and I actually favor Bundrage at this point and crossroads.

Williams can box. For God sakes he outboxed Margarito and Winky Wright.
And I still don't like Williams ;D

A lot of fighters, after they get KO'ed, they are not the same. Paul have been hit a lot. And until Martinez KO'ed him out, he withstood everything, anyone throw at him. But now, getting caught will do much more damage because he go knocked out.

Lara may not have knocked Williams down, but he definitely hurt him a few times.. And on top of that most thought Lara won that fight. William's chin isn't his only problem, he's starting to look shot.

True, but he didn't look real steady on his feet much of the Lara fight. I believe the KO by Martinez, wrecked Paul's confidence and changed him, he looks like a shot fighter.
