If Marquez had got the nod over Pac then I think it could have been him. Beating the P4P Number 1 is a pretty big deal. But alas, lets deal with the facts and not open that can of worms!
Some people will probably say wtf to this given the way his last fight went down but for me I would probably go for B Hop. Becoming the oldest world champ ever is a pretty massive achievement and when you look back at the 2011 boxing year, its technically the biggest accolade of the year imo. In pure history terms, thats huge.
Andre Ward will almost certainly get it though cos of the Super Six win I would imagine. He commands respect for the culmination of a few years work in the tourny, kind of like when Return Of The King won all those Oscars :D Abraham isnt a great 2nd win for the year though, everyone expected him to win that.
Lamont Peterson deserves some respect for pulling off the biggest shock of the year. A 12th round KO win to get him the shot was also good stuff. Humbling backstory and all that.
Only other I care to mention is Cotto. It was a big fight and a big redemption win and one a lot of people wanted to see happen. Im not sure Mayorga is a great 2nd opponent though for his 2011 year.
Technically, Pac beat Mosley and Marquez, so thats wins over 2 hall of famers but yeah as I said lets not open that can of worms!
Cant think of anyone else worth mentioning
Andre Ward beating AA and Froch.
Brian Viloria deserves mention. Segura was a p4p top 15 fighter on most lists when he faced him, some had him as high as top 10. Pinga Miranda is a top five flyweight and Brian Viloria dominated him too. Pinga is more effective (and ranked higher) at flyweight than Abraham was at smw when Ward faced him and Segura was ranked higher than Froch p4p when Viloria beat him. Moreover, Ward when into the Froch fight a 4-1 favorite, Viloria went into the Segura fight a big underdog.
Also, Rios deserves mention with wins over Acosta, Antillon and Murray.
I think it has to be Ward because of his 2 very good wins against strong opposition
Very good year for Arce as well. Moved up, won a title; moved back down, won again. Either he or Viloria is at least the Comeback Fighter of the Year.
Overall fighter of the year has to be Ward though. Agreed AA was a whatever fight, but winning the tourney while hardly dropping any rounds is pretty huge. And while I thought Froch was pretty overrated going into that fight, he's still probably the best fighter to have been beaten clearly this year. Well, scratch that -- Segura probably is.
If Hopkins had beaten Dawson, I would definitely give it to him (but I think Dawson would have won if the fight had been completed anyway).
And Viloria stopped Segura. Frankly, the more I think about it, the more it has to be Viloria if we are going on pure "in the ring" accomplishments.Quote:

Little guys just get no respect. He had moved up in weight three pounds but he was still the favorite big time. Segura had nine straight stoppage wins too going into the fight. So, stopping a guy coming off of nine straight stoppage wins and who was ranked p4p in my opinion clintches it. Plus, the Pinga Miranda win is better than the Abraham win no doubt about it. Before reading about Viloria I would have said Ward without hesitation. Now I am not so sure...
I think Nonito Donaire should be mentioned ttoo.
He stopped in 2 rounds Fernando Montiel, another top 15 p4p fighter and won against Omar Narvaez a very good and undefeated boxer .
