Bernard Hopkins vs Joe Calzaghe I and result of a hypothetical rematch
I was wondering who you guys thought won the first fight and how you scored it. I had it 115-113 for Hopkins. Calzaghe was busier, but Hopkins landed better punches. Also, who do you think would win a rematch? I bring up the topic because Calzaghe has been talking trash about Hopkins regarding a potential unification fight Bernard may have with WBO champion Nathan Cleverly.
-
Re: Bernard Hopkins vs Joe Calzaghe I and result of a hypothetical rematch
I forget the score but I had Calzaghe clearly winning. I dont why some fans make it out to be some contoversial decision but I dont think it was at all. Hopkins has nobody to blame but himself for giving up the early rounds similiar to what happened in the first taylor fight.
Calzaghe's style is all wrong for Nard and same thing would happen in a rematch.
-
Re: Bernard Hopkins vs Joe Calzaghe I and result of a hypothetical rematch
I scored the fight for Hopkins by 2 rounds I believe.. I based it mostly on EFFECTIVE punching. Joe's slapping didn't do it for me sorry guys..
I feel Hopkins will beat him even worse on the rematch and hopefully get the decision.

Hopkins won the fight. He scored the only knock down and landed all the harder, noteworthy punches. Except for the punch to Hopkins groin area I can't recall any significant punch Calzaghe landed. Calzaghe was busier. But they were all illegal slaps and arm punches. His usage of smoke and mirrors was outstanding. I'll give him that. It's what gave him this undeserved win.
As for the hypothetical rematch? Pretty simple. There's a reason Hopkins pushed and pushed for a rematch. And while Calzaghe didn't.
-
Re: Bernard Hopkins vs Joe Calzaghe I and result of a hypothetical rematch
Slow start from Calzaghe but he strolled it on home from the 4th onwards. Calzaghe won that fight by a considerable margin. As the fight went on he forced Hopkins to fight at his pace and outlanded Hopkins something ridiculous. Not a difficult fight to score and in polls I have done on this most people have Joe winning.
Just maybe Calzaghe didn't care for a rematch because he felt the same as what popular opinions suggests which was a convincing Calzaghe victory.
A rematch would go the same way except Calzaghe wouldn't be a sucker for the lead right in the first round.

Hopkins was the one that started better , it was calzaghe that took 4-5 rounds to get into the fight
scored it 114-113 hopkins
-
Re: Bernard Hopkins vs Joe Calzaghe I and result of a hypothetical rematch
114-113 Hopkins with the knock down as the deciding factor. Any time he actually threw any punches, Hopkins won the round. I don't think Calzaghe landed more than three clean shots all night.

You mean like the one Roy Jones knocked him down with in his very next fight? Calzaghe was always a sucker for the right. There was no adjustment he could of made
And how the fuck can you or anybody have Calzaghe winning when he landed damn near no legal punches? Lot of people need to read up on basic boxing rules
Quote:
Striking
The boxer can only strike with a closed fist using the front knuckle portion of the glove. Slapping with an open hand or striking with the wrist or lace area is illegal. The thumb must be held tight to the fist to avoid eye-gouging.
Shit not hard to understand

Re: Bernard Hopkins vs Joe Calzaghe I and result of a hypothetical rematch
It' 'seem's old Joe leave's a nasty taste in some of your mouth's
O yes Undefeated Undisputed Champion Of The World.? Ha Ha ;D:LOLATYOU:
-
Re: Bernard Hopkins vs Joe Calzaghe I and result of a hypothetical rematch
The fight was easy to score
8-4 to calzaghe, and add the knockdown to that
Yes hopkins probably landed the best 4 or 5 punches of the fight but thats all he landed
i can see both sides to the argument on a lot of fights but i cant understand how anyone can score that fight to bhop
The result would be similar although joe could get out of the blocks quicker and win by more
-
Re: Bernard Hopkins vs Joe Calzaghe I and result of a hypothetical rematch
Bernard won this fight easily under the rules of "boxing", heck if you put a bet on in the 12th round for a JC victory, you would have made a killing.
Cleaner, harder shots - He could have been busier but why does it matter when your opponent isn't landing effective punches. (Landed more punches on Hopkins than Roy Jones, my left nut!)
Again I refer to this wonderful stoppage from this barrage of bitch slaps whilst Daddy Enzo holds Joe's handbag...and again I say, FUCK Joe Calzaghe..
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...6/accuracy.gif
I hope he's still arrogant enough to come out of retirement so he can take a blemish on that BS undefeated record of his

Re: Bernard Hopkins vs Joe Calzaghe I and result of a hypothetical rematch
I don't know........ the ref did step in and prevented Manfredo's cheeks from becoming seriously reddened.
-
Re: Bernard Hopkins vs Joe Calzaghe I and result of a hypothetical rematch
Wo
Why are people so bitter about calzaghe?
-
Re: Bernard Hopkins vs Joe Calzaghe I and result of a hypothetical rematch
Not bitter at all, bro. But i HAVE seen more meaningful combinations thrown by middle-aged women fighting over a Kmart "blue-light special".
-
Re: Bernard Hopkins vs Joe Calzaghe I and result of a hypothetical rematch
I thought Bernard edged it 114-113.
Close fight with hard to score rounds.
Hopkins did the better work early where Calzaghe did better in the second half of the fight.
The majority of fans favored Calzaghe which i have no problem with.

As Alan Partridge would say 'Bunch of bitter bastards'. The Hopkins crew has never gotten over this loss. And again as Alan would say 'It's just sad'. A wise man is old Alan.

Re: Bernard Hopkins vs Joe Calzaghe I and result of a hypothetical rematch
This discussion would have more meaning to it had Robin 'The Grim Reaper' Reid not already beaten Calzaghe ;D

The "Hopkins crew"? Oh no, bro.... don't lump me in with that bunch. Not a Hopkins fan by any stretch of the imagination (and not just 'cause he beat Tito). :)
I admire Hopkins' longevity in the sport, and everything he's accomplished. But by no means am I a Hopkins fan. I'm just commenting on the "flurry" by Calzaghe on Manfredo. You gotta admit..... there's a lot of slapping going on in there.
:)

Holy shit you are annoying. I don't know if it's your lack of boxing knowledge, your lack of brain usage or maybe your terrible spelling. Maybe it's the fact that you have Calzagehe's dick so far inside ur mouth that it's poking your brain and blocking any rational thinking from occurring. Most boxing fans know Joe was a fraud. Sure he was good but he almost got stopped by a shot Roy Jones and Hopkins beat him and got robbed. Prime Jones or Hopkins would of slaughtered him. He's undefeated? Since when does that mean shit? He had crappy competition and his biggest win was against Hopkins which once again was controversial and IMO he clearly lost by 2 rounds based on effective punching, like VD has stated slaps are not legal punches. But why am I explaining myself to a moron who has said before that "wales are gods chosen people" .. Idk

You are right. My memories of this fight was hazy so I just got done watching it again and it was hops who started early with Calzaghe coming on in the mid rounds.
But ultimately, it was hops's lack of punch output that cost him the fight which isnt the first time that's happened to him.

The measure for me isn't how many casual fans thought Calzaghe won..it's easy to speak to the majority of Brits who will automatically have a bias towards a fellow Brit so your results are automatically skewed.
I'm talking if any of you are close to the boxing community. I promise you, the week after that fight I didn't hear one person say they thought that Calzaghe won that fight. From amateur boxers in Repton..from trainers to pro boxers. Nobody. They were all Brit's too. THAT to me is a much better and neutral measure of what happened in the fight.
The whole "well, 70% of the public thought he won" is a mute point anyway. He got the "W" JUST..and it was his greatest victory..a split decision over a 40-something Bhop. I rest my case..He sucks balls.

It's one of those strange fights that people have a bunch of wildly varying views on and they're all convinced they're right.
Like myself, I've watched the fight three times and I don't understand how anyone can say Calzaghe won it easily. He did nothing effective and landed almost no punches all fight. He just madly slapped at the air while Hopkins, IMO, made him look somewhat foolish. On the other hand, someone will undoubtedly call me all sorts of horrible names, deride my boxing knowledge, and possibly question my sexuality for having this opinion.
I loathe Hopkins and was cheering for Calzaghe too, for whatever that is worth.

I saw the same fight you did. And I also do not understand for a second how anyone can say it was "decisive" or "clear" for Calzaghe. He didn't even get three judges. The amount of Calzaghe dicksucking from the Brits is beyond embarrassing.

I just read it back...Perhaps we are reading different posts..
It was his 43rd fight - FACT
Everybody I personally know in the boxing community thought Hopkins won - FACT
Brits will automatically be biased towards Brits, Mexicans towards Mexicans etc - FACT
It was his greatest victory - FACT (MAYBE you can make a case for Kessler being his best victory but that's just as bad)
The only thing I can't prove beyond a shadow of a doubt is that he sucks balls but I'm working on it
Let's read your post back :
It was an easy fight to score - Opinion
Calzaghe won easily 8-4 - Opinion
I don't know how anyone can have Hopkins winning this fight - Opinion
Need I go on?? No...you simply can't reply to my post because you have no answer..*sigh* Calzaghe fans

yes it was his 43rd fight, but you name me a boxer that once he has made it to the top hasnt had "fights off", all the top fighters do, including hopkins and i bet you could find fighters that arent top of the pile who hopkins has fought during the latter part of his carear. This is a very bitter statement

yep, i think considering what hopkins has done since, calzaghe so clearly won the last 8 rounds it was probably his best win. He obviously doesnt suck balls tho :)
