Mayweather wants Martinez at 150 if no Pac Fight..
http://sports.yahoo.com/box/news?slug=ki-iole_mayweather_pacman011812
Wonder what the haters will say if this one gets made? ;)
Let me guess..it usually goes something like this. "Wellll..I'll believe it when they're in the ring together and the bell goes for round 1 - but if this fight happens I'll have nothing but respect for Floyd"
Day after fight night...
"Man it was like Martinez grew old during the fight! Floyd never would have won against the Martinez that beat Paul Will..He needs to fight X, Y, Z if he ever wants to be considered great!"
;) Looks like they're getting ready to give Mackie-boy some step aside money..

I'd want step aside money and a guaranteed shot at the winner otherwise could be waiting a long time for another shot. the money wont mean much to Macklin.

sorry but given how many times Floyd AND Manny haven't made good on their promises it's hard to really take either guy seriously until well the fight is under way, not making excuses for Martinez or bashing Floyd, but there still are questions on whether Martinez can make 154 effectively more so 150, if Martinez does so without it being an issue Mayweather deserves all the credit in the world, hell he still deserves credit for picking up the fight that Manny himself avoided like crazy
-
150 is an unfair advantage for Martinez though, he's a 160 fighter.
-
Re: Mayweather wants Martinez at 150 if no Pac Fight..
Will have to give all the respect in the world to Mayweather if this fight gets made.
-
Re: Mayweather wants Martinez at 150 if no Pac Fight..
It may go something like " I'm sorry Floyd but a 150 division does not exist". This one won't happen. Money speaks volumes but It would be foolish for Martinez to cut himself down, just as Cotto played parlor tricks and numbers games with Manny. These two may have more in common than we thought.

No we would have to give Martinez respect for agreeing to an unfair advantage to Mayweather. It would be a miracle if he could make that weight and still make the fight competitive.
-
Re: Mayweather wants Martinez at 150 if no Pac Fight..
If the fight gets made at 150, then I will call Floyd a pussy and ask for an extension on his jail time. What a fag. At least go half way so that it is 154.
-
Floyd is big enough to make 154. If its at 150 he doesn't deserve any credit.
-
Re: Mayweather wants Martinez at 150 if no Pac Fight..
I highly doubt Sergio can make 150
-
Re: Mayweather wants Martinez at 150 if no Pac Fight..
Martinez is fighting St.Pats day 17th March against Macklin, theres no way he can make this fight in time people.

You might read the article linked in the post before commenting on it:
Quote:
Mayweather said he would consider middleweight champion Sergio Martinez on May 5 if a Pacquiao fight could not be made, providing Martinez could make 150 pounds. Martinez, who is the third-ranked fighter behind Mayweather and Pacquiao in the Yahoo! Sports rankings, would do that, promoter Lou DiBella said. “It would hurt him to make 150, but he could do it,” DiBella said. “We’ve had this conversation and he has told me he could do it. If Mayweather wants to fight on May 5, Sergio absolutely, unequivocally would do it. He would want the opportunity to fight the best fighter in the world and he believes that Mayweather is the best fighter in the world right now.”
Martinez would have to abandon a planned March 17 fight with Matthew Macklin, but given the money involved in a Mayweather fight, that would not be an issue.
That said, this fight won't get made.

Alt - didn't Floyd just say that he doesn't believe in catchweights? Isn't catchweights what you disparaged Manny for in the past. If he fought ODLH at 154, fight Sergio there too. However, as long as Sergio can make 150 safely, I'd be excited about this.
-
Re: Mayweather wants Martinez at 150 if no Pac Fight..
Also, Alt you are one of the main haters here when it comes to Floyd-Manny.
-
Re: Mayweather wants Martinez at 150 if no Pac Fight..
I didn't think Floyd would do a catchweight and would fight at 154, which is best for both guys. It may be because they think Martinez is a small 160 pounder and will make 154 easy and have an advantage, so decided on 150 to even it up. Credit to both guys if the fight happens.

I'm assuming that 150 came from Martinez originally throwing that catch-weight out as bait to Manny (bait which was not taken). I too would prefer to see this at 154 but I don't think it's an issue of Floyd pulling 150 out of nowhere and hoping that Martinez wouldn't agree to it. Martinez's representation/offer came first.

This is correct and in addition, I believe he extended the 150 offer to Floyd too. Still, Floyd has given Manny a ton of crap for fighting catchweights. If this fight were to be made, I would prefer it at 154. Floyd fought Oscar there years ago anyway and now he is bigger than he was then so it isn't even as much of a stretch.

Is Martinez or Pacquiao a tougher opponent for Mayweather?

I think Martinez at 154 is tougher than Pac at 147. I don't know about Martinez at 150. It's at least a question (so better than any other alternative).

You beat me to it..Martinez has said before that he is a small middleweight and dont forget when Floyd fought Oscar he only managed 150 on the scales and 147 on fight night.
Having said that, fighting Martinez at 154 would be the better victory if only to give people no room to talk shit.
But 150 isn't as unfair as people think..Again though, I'd prefer he left the catchweights for the king (we know who that is)

Gotta love martinez low guard and a bit more relaxed around the ring than pac

Is Floyd bigger? I haven't seen him as big as he was against Oscar since then. Against Ortiz he weighed in fight night at 150, that means he would come in around there against Martinez also. 154 would be nice to Martinez, but even at 150, Martinez will be having a huge advantage come fight night in terms of weight. He will probably be 15-16 pounds heavier than Floyd along with his speed and power. I just think Floyd knows that Martinez isn't a truly complete fighter, and that he can beat him.

Re: Mayweather wants Martinez at 150 if no Pac Fight..
You know what the "haters will say" when this fight gets made?
After 5 years... it's about damn time.
But, on a more serious note, if he give Martinez 154, then I will bow down to Floyd. Shit.. Martinez does not really have a good Style for Floyd either, does he? But he can really bang! I was amazed at what he did to Pavlik's face in Atlantic City and his ome shot on PWill a couple years ago. But this.. This would be a real tough fight to call.
Martinez should totally whoop Margarito's ass if the Floyd fight falls through. ;D

I have a lot of respect for Mayweather's abilities, but making Martinez boil down to 150 is worse than any disadvantage Pacquiao forced on his opponents.

Go Floyd, If Manny don't want the fight May 5th I'm sure Martinez will jump at the chance

Not a chance worse than Oscar at 147! But this isn't a catchweight pissing contest and I would prefer it if Floyd fought him at 154.
The only reason I'm saying that is that it's a legit weight category and to satisfy you lot. Otherwise I dont have much of a real problem it being at 150. Taeth also explained it well
-
Re: Mayweather wants Martinez at 150 if no Pac Fight..
Did you see how many times he got hit by barker. I think Floyd wins quite easily but Martinez could give him a few problems.
Would rather see Pac and Martinez. More of a challenge for pac but Martinez would still lose.
I cannot complain if this fight is made. I only see three people to put against Pac or Floyd if they dont fight each other. Martinez, Bradley or marquez again. Would love to see a Floyd or Pac rematch with Marquez. I think he is more confortable at the weight now and would have a better chance.
However I see Floyd beating all of these people even Pac. But they are the only ones with a chance to make a fight against Floyd slightly competitive.
-
Re: Mayweather wants Martinez at 150 if no Pac Fight..
I have no problem at this catchweight since IF Martinez wants it to do it, since i guess he offered to Pac before and he can also do that to Floyd at 150
Honestly even at @154 imo Floyd could win this.

Mostly agree except w/r/t Marquez. There is no need or justification for a Floyd/JMM match ever. It will be a shutout every time. Marquez does not match up favorably with defensive-minded technical boxers (see also Chris John) and Floyd is the best in the business.
-
Re: Mayweather wants Martinez at 150 if no Pac Fight..
I'm happy for Martinez. His name is popping now. He should not have took that fight with Macklin. He got that fight signed already. A mandatory with Jcc Jr. Ward talking about meeting him in the middle. Now a catchweight with Floyd. I hope all this hype don't get him thinking about the next fight(whomever it may be). One lost at his point, he'll lose all potential fights.
150 for Floyd is smart. Going up to 154 then maybe coming back down to 147, can't be good at this point in his career. Besides, the money is Pacman as long as he keep winning. Which is at 147. Then the rest of the crop at 147 looks promising. 154, you have Saul which can go up at anytime. And Cotto. Floyd is doing the smart thing.

Floyd has grown into more of a welterweight since he fought Oscar. He never was a smaller welterweight, but now he is a good size one. I don't actually think Sergio is that much bigger than Floyd. Sergio strikes me as an average-sized junior middleweight. He went up in weight for the money (Pavlik), but really he is a small middleweight. Macklin has said as much. Sergio really is like an inch or an inch and a half taller than Maywather. Sergio isn't truly a complete fighter, which is why it's so impressive that he's done what he's done. He didn't start boxing until 20. He wasn't in the Olympics. He's picked up a lot of what he's got in his thirties. In that respect, he's at a big disadvantage against somewhat like Floyd who has boxed since he was 10. It's why the majority of the time you can't just train an ex-college football player to be a boxer, it's a totally different skillset.
Back to the point, frankly, and I'm a big Sergio fan, I believe Floyd would beat Sergio, and that it would be a good, competitive fight to watch. I don't understand why Floyd wouldn't just face him at 154. It would help Sergio, sure, but I still favor Floyd by a little bit even at junior middleweight. Plus there is the risk that Sergio comes into the fight weight drained and that would tarnish the accomplishment of beating him.

Haha I've always said people act like Floyd goes back into his cryo chamber after a fight. You always hear that Floyds trying to wait until Pac is old and slower but Floyd is older? Funny people. People forget while discrediting Floyd for fighting Oscar and Shane after their primes that Floyd wasn't in his prime fighting them either. Nowhere near it. (Closer against Oscar but nowhere near as good as his younger days)

Right, because even at 154 there would be people that would be saying the weight would be a significant factor in a Floyd victory, what more at 150lbs?

Re: Mayweather wants Martinez at 150 if no Pac Fight..
Again with this catch weight business. If you want a title go to that weight. Why give away your title and advantage? I dislike Floyd and I admire his skill but fair is fair. If you want an apple don't settle for an orange. Why give someone the advantage of beating you by tearing yourself down?
-
Re: Mayweather wants Martinez at 150 if no Pac Fight..
Fuck Floyd. He'll never ever fight the most threatning fighters.
