Re: Saul Alvarez -vs- Paul Williams Sept. 15 MGM Grand
Canelo may knock him out, but i'll go with a UD, good match-up BTW.

Re: Saul Alvarez -vs- Paul Williams Sept. 15 MGM Grand
I think this is a really good fight for both fighters at this stage of their careers. Canelo needs to keep on improving and Williams is certaintly another challenge like Mosley to so where he compares with the best. Does Williams' experience make an impact on Alvarez' progression? He can certainly bang no doubt and this is why this fight is going to really test Alvarez. We will see, I am excited for this one though.

Re: Saul Alvarez -vs- Paul Williams Sept. 15 MGM Grand
This better not be a PPV.
Usually fights on this weekend in Vegas are PPV, and I'm sorry, but Alvarez is not a PPV worthy headliner. Unless of course, his opponent is somebody that is PPV worthy. Unfortunately, Paul Williams is not. :p

Dan Rafael just confirmed via twitter that the match will be on PPV :-\

Re: Saul Alvarez -vs- Paul Williams Sept. 15 MGM Grand
I'll watch. But Williams isn't exactly the holy terror that "no one would fight" after getting smacked on by Lara and even shook by a Nerf ball throwing Ishida. He's a name, has bounced back a bit and all ballls and who doesn't like cross roads fights!
If Williams was known to use that magnificent rangy frame he was blessed with I'd give him huge shot, but may be in the minority but thinking Alvarez at this stage will play the boxer and some what batter him down the stretch.
What weight btw ?

This is a great fight. One of two questions will get answered.
Is Saul ready for the elite?
Is Williams back?
I'd said Saul can beat anyone at 154. But notice in the fight against Shane, that he is not a counterpuncher. In which, Paul Williams kyponite. I can't wait for this fight.

no way is Alvaraz beating Floyd right now. I wouldn't pick him against Cotto right now either. But a Williams fight can be competitive and exciting . Canelo doesnt have the one punch power as Martinez, so I'm going with Canelo UD, after an even 6 rounds, he wins the second half of the fight and gets the decision

Martinez don't have one punch KO power neither. He caught a ne feared welterweight in a middleweight fight. That have been easy to hit in his career and it took a toll on him. Anyway, I'll never bet against Floyd but 154 is not his weight class. Alvarez vs Cotto is coming soon so we will see how that goes. Thats if Paul Williams don't shock everyone. Except me. Williams by MD.

I got Blake Griffin on points ;D

Re: Saul Alvarez -vs- Paul Williams Sept. 15 MGM Grand
Canelo by KO...honestly I think that KO by Martinez has finished Paul Williams as a top level fighter. I think Mosley vs Williams would be much better as far as competition. I would like Canelo to fight Lara or Kirkland or Angulo....he'd probably beat all those guys, although if Lara decided to box he could hang with Canelo, in the end I think that's how he gets beaten, but it won't be by Williams.
-
Re: Saul Alvarez -vs- Paul Williams Sept. 15 MGM Grand
I'm not upset at a Paul Williams versus Canelo fight. It's a good fight and at a good time for Canelo's career. It's a step up, albeit not huge. I also wasn't upset with the prospect of a Kirkland-Canelo fight. However, it's not by mistake that although Williams and Kirkland were beat by Lara and Molina, Lara and Molina haven't even been mentioned as possible opponents for Canelo. I'll be rooting for Tall Paul, but favor Canelo.

Thats what I think. It's like trying to put toothpaste back on the tube with that chin and his kinship with leather has finally caught up and frankly it's a bit scary. I'm skeptical with the anoitment of Alvarez and not really sure what he learned in with Mosley other than coping with a cut and his name but I liked his composure.

Golden Boy must be confident that Williams is shot to make this fight. Gotta go with Canelo on this one, maybe a late stoppage.

I realize they will be careful with Alvarez for the meantime, but I don't think any version of Williams could have beaten him either. He doesn't have the power to hurt him, isn't technically near as sound and won't hold up to Canelos shots imo. At present I'm not sure whether this is even any kind of test for the kid, he should be able to punch holes through Williams.
-
It's a good fight, I like it. Canelo is not.ready for Floyd and this is a good next step for him. As for the PPV, I don't know why they are doing this. That fight will be lucky to draw 150k ppv buys. Unless this card is completely loaded it will not do great numbers.

Williams is finished and that's why Alvarez is fighting him, I mean come on why isn't Alvarez fighting cotto??

Re: Saul Alvarez -vs- Paul Williams Sept. 15 MGM Grand
If Paul Williams would fight taking full advantage of his mutant physical characteristics he would be this era’s version of Tommy Hearns but he doesn’t. He stands in the pocket and fights like he’s 5 foot 2 with a 67 inch reach. That’s probably also the reason that as a southpaw he has no clue how to deal with other southpaws.
Speaking of southpaws, Alvarez has little or no experience which adds intrigue and PW does quite well against orthodox fighters. I think we will finally see Canelo’s chin checked and at numerous times during the fight. All Williams has to do is use range and even ¾ of that wing span for the half the fight and he could probably win it.
I think Williams will fight as he always does but manage the ud or late stoppage nonetheless. Maybe even a white towel will be thrown in.
I am not convinced that the punch from Martinez has ruined Williams to the point most people do. I could also be gravely mistaken.

And because they'd rather wait 2-3 fights down the line when Cotto has gotten older and Canelo is still coming into his prime.

Re: Saul Alvarez -vs- Paul Williams Sept. 15 MGM Grand
If williams could fight a boring, boring safety first fight. Avoiding every risky exchange and making the most of his advantages he could win. More than likely he will not.

I favor Canelo and this is shrewd match-making because I believe it appears this is a tougher fight than it really is. However, this is a step in the right direction with regard to challenge.

Re: Saul Alvarez -vs- Paul Williams Sept. 15 MGM Grand
I hope that Williams wins this and upsets the applecart. If he is to win then he has to knock out or stop Alvarez because they will not allow the golden goose to lose a decision. Making it PPV is a kick in the balls for boxing fans.

I'm interested in seeing the Vegas odds on this because I'm not convinced that anyone really thinks this is a particularly tough fight for Canelo. I agree 100% with p4pking in his post above.

I agree with both counts. I don't think I've ever rooted for Williams before, but I will do so against the vaunted red headed fuck.
Is this a PPV ? If so then that is the bullshit of all bullshit.
Williams gets hit a lot these days, but he looked like he had something left last time out schooling Ishida.

Hulk that's nasty leave the ginger alone,;D Williams is far from finished it was a clean ko not that he was getting a beating. He got caught with a very good punch out of the blue so to say he is finished is
a bit premature in this point in time.:)

No he's not finished, but he did look quite poor against Erislandy Lara.

I guess he is now. I'm really upset by what has happened to Williams. Such a shame. :(
