Really looking forward to this. Not much airplay. Potential to be one of the best fights of the year imo. Dawson’s been at 175 for 7 years but swears 168 is no big deal. I’ve always thought the line between 168 and 175 is fine anyway.

dawson is a terrible fighter.
ward ud.
Ward is a super fighter. But Sawson is also. I can't wait for this fight. Glad they announced this early so both can be in the best shape possible. And Dawson won't have to fast pace those extra 7 pounds.
My prediction
DRAW
I am an Oakland native, so I of course will be rooting for Ward. I can see this fight either being an ugly snoozefest or a hell of a battle. We all know Ward will show up and use every trick in the book (yes he can fight dirty)...but the question will be how Dawson will show up. How will he fight at 168? He is a very talented fighter...but you don't which version of Dawson will show up. He can be disinterested or sensational. Hope it's a great fight.
Like them both!
My prediction, NO DRAW!
This could be a stinker, of a fight to watch it depends on what Dawson turn up on the night, he's big
and very fast if he's up for it he could beat Ward.
Think I'll creosote the fence rather than watch those two fight...
Shit to watch and Ward wins on points.
Disagree with those who figure this to be a stinker.
Dawson is a volume puncher. Wet and sloppy. Wards style is rather dry and chippy. Dawson will get smothered, butted, tied up and rocked to sleep by Ward and then hit on a break when he tries to push him away.
Andre ward style is like a coconut. Hard to crack, frustrating to get to and hardly worth the trouble when you finally get inside.
I'm picking Dawson.
i'm expecting a great fight... too much talent to be a snoozer. I've been posting on Scully's board for 7 years or so..scully is Dawson's trainer...super guy. if u guys aren't familiar with John Scully,... just saying.. the guy is as solid as they come... real gent.
U guys have a great board here... but feel free to visit ice man scully's board... they don't post as much as here..but real smart guys...
I do appreciate a nice boxing match, but I feel there styles will not gel ,Ward is very dirty with his head
it's not unlike watching Hopkins, Dawson has all the tools, but most of the time fights like a tool , both
can fight very negative. I'm off I will open the blinds, I want a look a pig may be flying over the back garden.;D
I agree... There is that chsnce or a borefest. I think u hit it right on the head... Ward is a dirty as they come and Dawson has the talent but lacks fighting spirit... Still, if these two meet, how can u not see it?
Anyway you look at it, this is the top guy at 168 fighting the top guy at 175. The only problem with the fight is that Dawson had to come down to 168. Otherwise, If Ward beat Dawson at 175, we might be talking about a new p4p kingpin. Still, these two guys are among the most talented in boxing. I'm excited about it. I'm probably more excited about Junior vs. Zoolander and Nishioka vs. Donaire, but that is just a personal preference. Ward v. Dawson might be more significant than either.
I know a lot a people don't like watching ward, I don't mind his style other than when he's butting people but I don't view him as borring. Dawson on the other hand is just really frustrating to watch to me and I think ward beats him, dawson seems to dial it in far to often.
I don't know if you guys have noticed that Dawson and Ward are both very serious guys. I don't think I've seen Dawson smile, ever. Ward, being a SOG and all, isn't one to laugh, joke and carry on foolishly much either. What I'm saying is this fight is going to be an intense battle. Both these men will be well conditioned, well prepared mentally and eager to have their hands raised. This isn't going to be just another fight for either one. If you don't watch this fight you might be sorry.
Looking forward to this one really. Regardless of style, best fighting the best just sign me up. I actually see Dawson as more 'boring' as a ward who can be a very crafty cuss. Once it does get going I think Dawson will be gratefeul he had rounds with Hopkins, it will suit him well style wise. I have a sneaking suspicion though Ward will put on a show vs Dawson and take it on the cards.
On a side note I read that actor Nick cannon (?) will be the ring announcer ??? I do hope Michael buffer manages to throws a stool at him and yell "get outta my house" :-X
Isn't Dawson the guy that said he can make 168 and thinks he can beat Andre Ward?
I think when Dawson called out Ward he was saying "I can make 168 and I believe I can beat him, Andre Ward, let's do this!"
I think Dawson wants a chance to take Ward's title, not the other way around. If he truly CAN make 168 as easily as he says, it's the best situation for him, if Ward beats him, he can then say "well I was drained, it wasn't so easy" and he keeps his light heavyweight title. If he wins he can say "I just wanted to prove im the best at 175 and 168, no one can beat me I can defend both titles!" etc. And claim he's undisputed at 175 and 168. So he wins either way. So if he can make 168 as easily as he says he can, I can see why he'd do that.
I disagree Inuit, any fight SOG is part of is going to be a stinker, and Dawson's fights aren't much better.
I seriously doubt that i'll even bother trying to watch it, this is on Showtime Sept 8th, the same night:
At Las Vegas (Showtime): Randall Bailey vs. Devon Alexander, 12 rounds, for Bailey's IBF welterweight title; Ajose Olusegun vs. Lucas Matthysse, 12 rounds, for vacant WBC interim junior welterweight title.
I believe the line between 168 and 175 to be a narrow one. Most 168 pounders today are light heavyweights. Seven pounds is just not that much this high up. I think it is however a little tougher to shed after 7 years. Its probably why Dawson tried to negotiate 170. Tbh I kind of think Ward showed a lack of balls by not agreeing to that. I mean he would not be defending his title but so what? Its not like if Dawson wins he's going to defend it. Looking forward to this pugilistic tutorial. Cant see either getting stopped.
I submit that every Devon Alexander fight is twice the stinker of a Ward or Dawson fight. He is literally my least favorite "world class" fighter (clincher/wrestler) to watch. At a minimum, the quality level will be much higher in Ward/Dawson than in either of those fights.
Have you ever watched Dawson fight? He's super accurate and doesn't throw a ton of volume. Sloppiness is not his problem at all -- he's one of the technically cleanest guys out there; his problem, as many have pointed out, is seeming disinterested and taking rounds off (see the Pascal fight). If there's any fight he'll be super motivated for and focused in, though, it's this one. I'll give the edge to Ward, because he just seems to have a ridiculously high will to win on top of his skill level; but this is close to a toss-up and would be a total toss-up for me if Chad weren't dropping weight for it.
Hopefully they stagger these a bit or I'll be bouncing back from stream to stream.
I hear you Mars and there is a real possibility that it could be a little sleepy at times but I think its going to be the surprise of the year. I just think the two styles bode well for a boxing match given Dawsons range and being a southpaw. The only thing I see as a possible spoiler here is a bad clash of heads.
Ward is extremely good at what he does and wins. He is more B Hop than Roy Jones. Andre will always beat Froch and the rest because he is that good. It would be in Froch interest for him to move up in weight or avenge Kessler because he will always remain number 2. Dawson fought B Hop to prepare himself for Ward, but I think Wards take a tight decision.
There are two factors and they are Dawson's albatross, the catch weight meaning he has to lose weight and box in a lower division which would reek havoc on his concentration as the bell rings for every round. As far as the excitement is concerned, You may have to get lucky and Dawson will be full of piss and vinegar or put a lump of hot coal under his shorts. Dawson has been coming in at 175lbs. for along time and he could over train or under eat causing him to react slower.
I'm sure i'll end up watching it Inuit, just because it's boxing and on HBO, what i'd like to see is Chad stomping a mudhole in Ward's ass, what will likely happen is a boring, hard to score decision, with Ward getting the nod.
All in all Sept 8th figures to be a full evening of boxing, Vitali Klitschko vs. Manuel Charr comes on Saturday afternoon here in the States, then later that night the HBO & Showtime fights come on. A smorgasbord of boxing for us fans.
