Anybody see the Nigel Benn special on Ringside??
He was very honest about pretty much everything. Some of the key things he said, which were very interesting were:
Michael Watson was in a differerent League to himself and Eubank
He said that he did not think he would've beaten Joe Calzaghe
He said that McClellan's punch power was incomparible to anybody else he ever fought (no real suprpise I guess)
Re: Anybody see the Nigel Benn special on Ringside??
I normally find these things cringeworthy but not this one.
All boxing fans that don't seem to understand it hurts when you get punched, fighting is actually nerve-wracking, and money is the biggest factor in any contest taking place should be forced to watch this.
He could have fought Nunn but ended up with McClellan because he refused to take a £100,000 pay cut.
Re: Anybody see the Nigel Benn special on Ringside??
Theyve been doing a few really good Specials lately - they had Tyson, Ray leonard and Chris Eubank on over the past few weeks. I thought Nigel Benn came across really well, to be honest. He is still clearly quite a tempestuous guy, but he was answering the questions pretty honestly and he gave out respect where its due. Class guy.
Funnily enough, I'd also recorded 'Sporting Heroes' with Lennox Lewis and gary Newbon and i watched that straight afterwards. It was pretyty stoiff and stage managed compared to the Ringside format, but Lennox came over as a bit of an arsehole to be honest. Very conceited and quite arrogant. he didnt really give anything much away and didnt really have anything good to say about anybody apart from his mother. Shame.

Nigel Benn rated Calzaghe very highly, and he said he would not of fancied fighting him, in his time
but he fancied fighting Froch, the word of a honest man.;)

True.
Calzaghe would have had some injury excuse up his sleeve anyway.
Lol.
Nah, JC workrate would give any opponent problems.
Benn is a legend in the game who fought anyone..anywhere..at all stages of his career.
I like Benn what you see, is what you get always enjoyed watching him fight win lose or draw.:)
Re: Anybody see the Nigel Benn special on Ringside??
Yeah I watched it. He seems to be a mature man now, as I remember him as a little boy attitude. I enjoy when boxers can mature and leave the sport gracefully. He understood his talents had diminished and he quit. Something many boxers find hard to do. You also have to admire his honesty.
Re: Anybody see the Nigel Benn special on Ringside??
Thanks for posting the video I missed it on TV so great to finally watch it.
Benn is one of my favorite fighters of all time the guy had such heart in the ring and he is now such an honest guy.
Ive had the pleasure of meeting some of my favorite fighters such as Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran but I would give anything to meet Nigel Benn.
Re: Anybody see the Nigel Benn special on Ringside??
Nigel Benn has always come across as honest and truthful in interviews. He improved himself with ever defeat and came back stronger. He should have got the decision against Eubanks in their return fight.
The documentary where Benn meets Gerald was very emotional.
Re: Anybody see the Nigel Benn special on Ringside??
That was a great piece. I appreciate the heads up and putting the vid up. I've been hooked on Benn ever since the Dewitt scrap. Fierce honest fighter and as down to earth and real as they come.
Re: Anybody see the Nigel Benn special on Ringside??
Nigel Benn was one of the most exciting and honest fighters I've ever seen. The guy would fight anyone, anywhere, anytime and he didn't fuck about.
When the McClellan fight was made it was the most excited I have ever been about a fight. I knew that was going to be dynamite and it didn't disappoint. So tragic that it cost McClellan so much.

Yes the Benn v McClellan fight was the only fight where I was jumping around for the whole of the fight. It was a proper Rocky 4 movie where he came back to stop Gerald.
Re: Anybody see the Nigel Benn special on Ringside??
Nigel is a god...spoke honestly about his career....fair play Nigel
job biscuit (Benn era was very special)!!!!!
eh eh!!!

It was incredible fight from start to finish. The US commentators said it was like a Hollywood script and they weren't wrong. It was the kind of fight that summed up Benn as a fighter.
I really miss the guy to be honest. His fights rarely disappointed. Imagine him fighting someone like Froch, what a great fight that would be!

I didn't see the Special but i've always kind of liked Nigel Benn, he was a fucking wild man in the ring. I felt with the right trainer/manager he could have gone a lot farther than he did.
As for Eubanks, that was one weird muther-fucker.
Re: Anybody see the Nigel Benn special on Ringside??
What a class act and honest guy. Really like how he propped Watson.
