Love her or loathe her. She is dead.
Good ;D
How did most Brits feel about Thatcher? Seems like I recall her last term as UK's Prime Minister being a rocky one.
Anyway - RIP Margaret Thatcher
How would you rate her compared to the PMs since she left office?
She was better than that cunt Blair, thats a fact.
was a bit young and naive at the time - and am generally politically ignorant - but she seems to have been loathed by a lot. Which makes me wonder how she stayed in power so long :confused:
a lot of people very pleased she is dead - seems harsh , she's not a mass murderer or anything
Love or hate her,at least she had a backbone, more than can be said about
the pussy politicians today.
She screwed many people over and made society even more unequal between rich and poor. She promoted the yuppy generation, killed the manufacturing industries, starting the selling off of public assets.
She remained in power because of the Falklands war, weak opposition and eventually got thrown out by her own party.
Miners got screwed all over the country and the police had to do the dirty work.
Scottish got the poll tax tested on them first and they caused protests.
The inequalities cause riots in Brixton and Toxteth and other places.
She did nothing for women politicians.
She may be the most admired prime minister by some but by others she is the most reviled.
I did hear that its gonna be the only 21 gun salute that actually gets shot into the coffin :-X
no different to catholic churchQuote:

So?Quote:

How tragicQuote:

National holiday declared in Argentina today?
Funny, two people who F88ked the miners, have Died in the same year.
I haven't seen a day where so many statements have been made that could equally have been made of Hitler or Stalin. Martin Luther King said that he would never celebrate or take joy in the death of an enemy. Frankly, I can't say that I am so forgiving, she was the figurehead for an administration that tried to bring the populus back down to the working class plebs who had no say nor interest in what the ruling class did. Her successes are all championed by those with bank balances running into seven, eight, nine and ten figures. The fact that she died at the Ritz hotel clearly shows that she had betrayed her relatively humble roots to grasp towards the upper class a long, long time ago.
I don't hope she rests in peace, I hope death gives her all of the punishment and penance that life never gave her. It is an unpleasant glee I take in her death, but I can't imagine anyone else dying that would trigger the same emotions.
You are right, I always connect the two.;D
I know fuck all about politics, I have no interest in it. Ignorant I know. I'm 29, never voted, never will. The government is just another business. They will line their own pockets first.
Who ever makes decisions in this country do it for certain reasons, not always in the best interests of the majority.
All I hear is people moaning about immigration, I agree that this country should not be open to all to come and sponge off those of us who work and pay taxes. It's not just the foreigners though the Brits are at it too. Not really sure what I'm saying but if the majority of people are unhappy about things in this country why does the government not sort it out? Because there's something in it for them that's why.
Anyway back to Thatcher it seems to be Northeners and others who were part of the mining community that I hear slag her off. I don't know much about it. Unless someone has directly harmed me or my family then I won't sing and dance about their death but I have no feelings or thoughts towards it.
As my dad says what difference does it make who's in power, he's still poor and nothing much changes. Taxes and other stuff to pay will always remain so who gives a fuck?
The best things about the UK is the NHS and benefits (if they are needed). Another thing my dad says, in this country you will never starve or be left to die. So that's one thing I am thankful for.
The government can do what they want, I'll continue to pay what they tell me to pay and I'll get on with my life and enjoy it without wasting any time on political bull shit.
(this post is probably the most thought I have given to politics)
On a lighter note does this mean Thatchers daughter will now have to pay bedroom tax?
I'd heard some bad things said about Thatcher here in the States, mainly said by liberals here who didn't like her close association with then President Reagan. I didn't have a clue that she was so loathed by her own countrymen. Now I don't feel so bad about despising Hillary "rodman" Clinton, who may run for U.S. president in 2016 and/or when Comrade Dingle-Barry finishes his 2nd term.
About fucking time; the Queen is next, and then the cycle of political and Royal bastards continues. The fact that she was such a long time leader is damning of the British populace at large, but then again it was a case of either that or Labour which was broken. Mind you, in those days Labour was about principles and representing the workers and I respect that. Her policies were the opposite and set in motion the horror that is Britain today. Unaffordable rail networks and utilities, poll tax (which exists today in various forms), mining communities decimated, manufacturing sold down the river on the garbage spiel of globalisation etc. If there was ever anyone who truly hated England, it was Thatcher.
I hope her final moments were filled with incredible pain and suffering, though I doubt there would have been very much mental anguish or regret there.
Miles is from The Republic of Harrogate by the way
I got a full scholarship to go to university. If I hadn't got the scholarship I'd be a builder now like my brothers. My year was the last in the country where you got the chance to win full scholarships. If I'd been a year younger I would have been fucked. Guess who it was who scrapped the scholarships programme?
My Uncle Pat worked in the coal mines till Maggie shut them. Except it wasn't Maggie that shut them, it was the fact that we could import Polish coal for half the price and Maggie just decided to stop subsidising the industry.
My Uncle John used to work in the shipyards until Maggie closed them, except it was the fact you could buy the same ship for half the money from Korea and other places.
What she should have done was try and set up some kind of new manufacturing infrastructure but instead Britain became a services/tertiary industry economy. This worked great for me when I came out of university and started work in a deregulated City, but Maggie deregulating the financial industry just means a nice time for the people at the top of that tree and soes nothing for the Uncle Johns and Pats who are too old to get one of the shit McJobs that another 200 people are going for.
Privatising the gas, telecom and trains wasn't too smart either. Now everybody can get robbed at will by the people who own those industries.
My family is a good microcosm of what happened to Britain under Maggie. Worked out great for the minority but everybody else got fucked at the drive-in.
Rip
I mean I heard that the mines were running at a loss and so had to be closed but that doesn't justify the bitch taking my milk away from me as a 6 year old and making me share a bottle and two straws with a fat cunt called David Cross
Rest in hell you slag.
We import 55 Million tons of coal,! WTF nasty old bitch a true Tory lump of SHIT, fucked up were I live
in Wales and many other part of the country.
Never recovered pit and steel work areas of the UK, Towns and Villages just wasted away, no work
no future, some great Tory bitch only good Tory is a dead one.;)
So its not true that the coal industry was dying a slow and painful death long befiore Thatcher came along? Its not true that it was costing a shit load of money to help it limp along?
All Ive heard/read so far is Thatcher fucked things up for me/us/insert place name here. Without any real explanation as to why it was all her fault.
The coal industry was in decline thanks to an unwillingness to invest and while there is still plenty of coal in the hills and vales of the country today, Thatcher decided to forget about trying to remain self sufficient and to have the resources to look after ourselves, and instead went for the cheap option and effectively told the British coal mining industry to go fuck itself. You know the way our bills go up every year, along with the profits of the privatised energy companies.....there's even talk about energy blackouts next year unless we can negotiate a new deal on importing natural gas. Guess who you can thank.
You know the way that train prices just keep going up and up every year, along with the profits of the companies who have a captive audience who have to commute to work, and have no choice but to pay their prices? Privatisation. Guess who you can thank.
You know the way there are so many towns and cities now where people don't really know their neighbours, people are always having to move about to find work, or live in estates where they're stuck with no money in a rut that is impossible to escape? Is it a surprise that many people in these dead end areas turn to alcohol and drugs, and then to crime to fund these vices? Guess who you can thank.
Deregulation of the markets and an encouragement of the entrepreneurial spirit that has allowed a few people from humble beginnings to make it big. A good thing, right? Yet for those small number of people who get to join the entitled elite whose families have been rich for centuries, the gap between those who make the leap and the majority who didn't have the lucky break/ great idea/ willingness to be ruthless getting to the top is just getting bigger and bigger. Guess who you can thank.
And the Falklands....they're on the other side of the world FFS. Why spend millions on a ridiculous confrontation with Argentina for a set of islands that should have been released along with the rest of the empire decades previously.
I can't say that Thatcher has affected me personally, except in encouraging me to never trust a Tory. I have an uncle who is a miner, but it is in the social impact that she had on the North, Wales, Scotland, Ireland that really galls me. If I had a magical gun that allowed me to go back and shoot one person in the 20th century....Hitler would not be such an easy choice as it might appear.
Our coal industry was not as competitive compared to the german because there's was subsidised.
Her first attack on the tu's miners failed so she set about baiting them in to a second round. She began stockpiling of coal so when a strike took place it would have less an effect for longer. Banned secondary action so workers in other industries couldnot strike to show support. sequestration of union money meant miners families took to collecting on the streets to survive. She basically starved them back to work. Evil bitch, ruined the sense of community turned families against each other - 'no such thing as society'.
She sold off industries back to the people who already owned it which in turn was supposed to make it more competitive....anyone see their bills go down.
She turned this country from manufacturing into a service country where we have to import everything and can't manage on our own. Economists are now saying we should try to build up our manufacturing base - really? After we sold everything and closed the country down.
Allowing people to buy council homes was fine - having no building programme to replace them, dumb.
She supported Pinochet and depending on your source killed up to 3000, tortured 30,000
Refused sanctions against Aparthied in S.Africa
Allowed use of US bases/UK airspace to bomb Libya
Poll Tax
Shoot to kill in N.Ireland
I take it you no nothing about politics?
