Do you think Floyd Mayweather Jr. will retire undefeated?
This is just something I've been thinking about recently having read comments from Guerrero saying he thinks Floyd doesn't have the legs anymore. Not many fighters know when it is time to leave the sport so retiring undefeated doesn't happen very often. Floyd is probably the greatest fighter of his era and we all know how important that '0' is to him.
In my mind I can't see who is going to beat Floyd but boxers get old and diminish sooner or later. Do you think he'll retire with his undefeated record still in tact or do you think he'll risk it for too long?
-
Re: Do you think Floyd Mayweather Jr. will retire undefeated?
I don't think so simply because.......MONEY
Floyd will fight for sooooo long, I reckon he'll retire then come back for money.
Sooner or later he'll lose.
-
Re: Do you think Floyd Mayweather Jr. will retire undefeated?
obviously if he gets out at the right time he will
I think Canelo offers some promise for beating him
-
Re: Do you think Floyd Mayweather Jr. will retire undefeated?
after 30 months he will be 49-0
i can see him fighting one more for the massive cherry on top.
50-0

It all depends on how long he keeps fighting, greed or ego will get him if he doesn't pull a Marciano. I don't have high hopes for him, Floyd is ALL about the attention these days.
Broner is the only fighter who craves it more.

Re: Do you think Floyd Mayweather Jr. will retire undefeated?
I don't think the available welterweight division is very deep right now and Floyd appears hesitant as of late to venture into junior middleweight/middleweight territory so, to answer your question, yes, I think it is quite possible. Trout, Lara, Canelo (all GB) are bigger challenges than Guerrero, as is Maravilla, GGG etc. However, frankly, even if he did take on some of those guys at 154, I think he has a solid chance at beating them too.

Re: Do you think Floyd Mayweather Jr. will retire undefeated?
He definitely won't retire undefeated. Even if he does manage to retire undefeated two or three years from now he'll blow through his money and need to make a comeback at some point.

Re: Do you think Floyd Mayweather Jr. will retire undefeated?
I think he could if he stays at 47. If he goes to 154 he could hit a road block. Guerrero believes Floyds legs are gone because Roach and a few hbo dingbats have put it out there over that last couple of years.
His legs are not gone and he still fights better off the back foot then anyone in the sport by a long shot.
He has simply adjusted his tactics and is fighting smarter late in his career.

If they haven't gone then they're definitely going. He wasn't standing and trading with Cotto all the time because he enjoys being punched in the face. And getting punched in the face a lot more than you used to doesn't seemt o me to be something you can accurately describe as "fighting smarter".

He let Cotto in the fight and chose to go into the corner. Cotto did not steer him there. He was about to go to jail so maybe he was trying to make a point I don't know. I agree though that he did not fight smart.

Re: Do you think Floyd Mayweather Jr. will retire undefeated?
I think he can retire undefeated. Coming back is a different story.
With a 6 fight deal and a promise to stay busy, here's Floyd schedule IMO . . .
Guerrero May '13
JMM End of '13
Khan Cinco DE Mayweather '14
Bradley(if he somehow keep winning)
Pacman
Garcia

Coming back isn't retiring so if you voted "yes" kill yourself.

If we see him fight in a similar way next month I think we can say for certain his legs have gone.

Re: Do you think Floyd Mayweather Jr. will retire undefeated?
I don't know about undefeated but I get the feeling he'll draw out a match with Canelo like a long winded 70's rock ballad. He'll make him sweat (if he beats Trout :-X) and can see him going Guerrero, Khan (he was prestaged for Floyd), and going trinket grabbing vs Molina-Smith winner. Bradley needs to right the ship. Guerrero may be a huge underdog but if Mayweathers legs are not what they were, who's are??? , Guerrero will show it.

Re: Do you think Floyd Mayweather Jr. will retire undefeated?
I think Floyd is the greatest boxer of all time, but I have to say no, I don't think he will retire undefeated.
Reason being, he's shown that he isn't the smartest/most conservative guy outside the ring. I say he will retire undefeated, but make comeback after comeback because he needs money, and he'll get caught eventually. I've seen big signs of him slowing down over the past few years.
-
Re: Do you think Floyd Mayweather Jr. will retire undefeated?
I hope he loses one day but have a feeling he loves his 0 so much that he will want to retire with it intact so think he will retire undefeated.
-
As someone mentioned before, if floyd moves up to fight at 154 the risk is intensified.
Floyd has nothing to prove at 154 and he is at a major diadvantage at that weight.
Martinez, canelo and trout need to grow some balls and create their own legacy by moving up in weight themselves and getting in the andre ward mix or fighting each other.
Obviously, everyone wants to fight mayweather as the money involved will be the biggest payday of their career, but these guys need to start creating some type of hype and ppv status about themselves and stop using floyds name.
-
Re: Do you think Floyd Mayweather Jr. will retire undefeated?
Retire undefeated, you must be a younger fella, or on drugs like floyd senior and uncle roger maywetaher...
lil floid will close out his career in about 10 years time from now with a $#!tload of losses on his record against lower-level competition, and with a couple more short prison stints to boot.
He's gonna do like Roy Jones did which is to fight mostly 2nd tier guys during his prime, and after his prime is gone, then start fighting the tough guys that people had wanted him to fight all along, except now it's too late and he gets his @$$ whupped all the time. He should've taken the tough fights during his prime when he probably would've won them.

Floyd certainly won't lose to Guerrero, the only way Mayweather loses his '0' is if he stays in the game too long, and that's a possibility.

Re: Do you think Floyd Mayweather Jr. will retire undefeated?
I think Pacman was the only genuine chance to beat him, but that was 3 years ago. Pacman couldn't beat an egg right now. I see no one to challenge Mayweather and beat him in the next 12 months at least.

I can't recall if you have ever answered this question, but if Floyd fought Cotto and De La Hoya at 154, why wouldn't he fight Trout, Canelo, and Martinez at 154? Moreover, if we are talking legacy, don't wins over those guys do more for Floyd's legacy than wins over Robert Guerrero and Devon Alexander?

Khan is surely going to have to do something meaningful at welter to get a Floyd fight. People aren't going to shell out for a PPV just because the WBC ranked Khan number two welterweight. Floyd is going to have to fight guys like Canelo if he wants the PPV dollars to keep coming in.
Although apparently he's got a guarantted minimum for his next six fights. Surely Showtime aren't dumb enough to give him a massive minimum and then let him pick guys like Khan to fight?

I cant see the martinez fight happening due to the hbo/showtime clash.
Trout and canelo are possible but i dont see canelo beating trout which would make the most money.
I would like to see floyd fight bradley next but i cant see floyd fighting a top rank fighter.
I think floyds legacy is already written.
but for some reason some feel he needs to be in a tough fight where he gets a bit more bloodied up, or perhaps knocked down again to prove he has lived up to this rocky style moment of struggle and heart.
Floyd has had tough fights and because he gets out of them without no real injuries or visible damage is more of a compliment to his skills.
Like when a pre ruiz-roy jones dominated everyone and made james toney and hopkins two of his easiest fights there really is no difference in the way they both dominate their opponents.
The only way floyd gets a loss is if he beats himself by just mentally not having it anymore or suddenly instantly getting old in the ring.
Someone mentioned khan as a future opponent but khan has garcia and peterson to get through first and that wont be easy.
Plus. Robert Guerrero has achieved far more than canelo has.

Re: Do you think Floyd Mayweather Jr. will retire undefeated?
Them defensive skills don't last for ever, Floyd will visit the well one day guess what no water,!
it will happen why because Floyd s love of MONEY.;)

Re: Do you think Floyd Mayweather Jr. will retire undefeated?
What can I add to this? Hm.
Well, from the outside it seems like Floyd Jr. has put himself in a rut commonly occurring with boxers who enjoy great success: all of a sudden, everyone in your immediate (and most times non immediate) family depends on you to live. They are literally sucking off the now many tits of your success.
We all know Floyd Jr. is known for his extravagance and he makes no claim to the contrary. That alone has put many boxers in the hole. But I'm gonna go so far as to say that Floyd is a lot more frugal than we perceive. But that's just an educated guess.
I only see Floyd Jr. being beat in 2 ways: 1) he's just too old 2) the burden of this co dependence of his family to which they also demand an equally extravagant lifestyle to Floyd Jr. in which they have no way to sustain themselves. Which would lead him to fight on when he really shouldn't.
His skills are unmatched. Not theoretically either, or up for debate between pundits. Mathematically you can see that Floyd Jr.'s skills are way beyond anyone else's even now. He trains like no other, and he wins like no other. Period.

I think those guys are just to big although I think he turns Alvarez into a human pin cushion. Welter was probably Oscars best weight or arguably 135 and Cotto's was 147. Trout is a big jr middle probably a weight class out of where he should be. I don't think Floyd would take the Martinez fight at 154 or a catch. To big an ego and should he win he would be burnt at the stake for making Martinez comedown even if Martinez once again offered to. He would get credit for beating a weakened Martinez and expected to meet him at 160.

As far as legacy-defining though, a win over Trout, Canelo or Martinez does more for him than wins over Guerrero or Alexander. I stand by that. Welter was Oscar's best weight, but he fought as high as 160, and Floyd legitimately fought him at 154. If the point is that fighting Cotto and Oscar at 154 is not as impressive (or the same) as fighting a natural junior middlweight, I see your point to an extent, but it decreases the quality of tho wins over Oscar and Cotto then, if he didn't face them at their best weights.
