Ken Burns' 'Prohibition', 'Jazz', 'Baseball', 'The West', 'World War II', and 'The Civil War' are all brilliantly done.
Carl Sagan 'Cosmos'
'Nightmares in Red, White, and Blue' which is a documentary about horror films is interesting

Re: When you're bored, looking at documentaries?
I'm always watching documentaries and outside of the news it is pretty much the only television I watch as I believe most television is a waste of time. The Pirate Bay is a great source for documentary collections and I'm still working through a file a that was dozens of GB's in size. Most of it has been wildlife, science, politics etc with a bit of the oddball thrown in for good measure. I have watched them all as I think I should be learning something everyday, even if some of the stuff isn't my normal fare. Today I finished one about Stephen Hawking who seems like a funny chap. I had no idea that he was so lazy as a youth. Tomorrow it is something about 9-11 which is in 2 parts and that will keep me occupied in the morning.

The Planet Earth documentary is great

Re: When you're bored, looking at documentaries?
I watch a lot of documentaries. My favorite from Ken Burns is the one he did about the Dustbowl. Saw one the other day about a boxing gym in Houston that was pretty good, but I didn't catch the name.

Room 237 is a documentary about Stanley Kubrick and his insane attention to detail. I strongly recommend it especially for @Gandalf I think he'd really dig it

If you ever set foot in a decent underground nightclub anywhere in the world in the last 25 years then this Documentary is a must see and is a brilliant A-Z journey of how it all started from Disco.
Disco thru Drum and Bass with interviews by the pioneers from Detroit and loads of other frontrunners of Electronic music who kick started the second summer or love/acid house scene and all that followed.

Re: When you're bored, looking at documentaries?
Sometimes a lecture is as good as a documentary and the TED talks are great for this. Here is one from the former wife of the guy who taught me about music when I was at University. Her name is Evelyn Glennie and she is widely regarded as the foremost percussionist of her era. She composes and performs all over the world but here she talks about something dear to my heart as a sonic artist. "How to listen". Bear with it, It is slow to start but will literally open your ears. Remember also that she started to go deaf at age 8 and was profoundly deaf by the age of 12.

Re: When you're bored, looking at documentaries?
There's nothing better than a great documentary IMO.
Some of my favorites...
Capturing the Friedman's - highly recommended, this will blow your mind especially if you go into it cold.
Thin Blue Line - about the murder of a police officer and the wrongful conviction of a suspect. This is classic.
Shoah - about the holocaust and those who lived through it. You'll have to watch this is segments though, given the fact that it's nearly 10 hours long lol.
Man on a Wire - Fantastic

Watching night of the fight Hatton's last stand with his failed comeback fight which is good.
Also watched When Ali came to Britain over the many years and his affinity with the country and beating up our champs and meeting his fans here.
