Rodriguez comes in overweight.
Edwin Rodriguez came in 2 pounds overweight at the weigh-in. Funny how he made such a big deal about drug testing when he couldn't even make weight.
-
Re: Rodriguez comes in overweight.
Not to mention this is the fight of his life, very unprofessional. I hope the fight goes ahead anyways, says he had two hours to make weight so that must be right coming up if it hasn't already happened.

Re: Rodriguez comes in overweight.
So Rodriguez missed weight but the fight goes on, he gives up 200,000 of a million dollar purse. Why was he making a million in the first place, and how the hell do you let this happen for that kind of money:-\
He also has to weigh in under 180 by 9am tomorrow, maybe that will be tough for him as well. He fucked himself over royally with this for sure.
-
Re: Rodriguez comes in overweight.
fortune cookies aint healthy, but sure delicious.
-
He's not making friends, that's for sure.

Re: Rodriguez comes in overweight.
No mention on the title. It should not be on the line.

I think he spent so much time trying to get into Wards head he forgot to stay in his. Definitely going to be a tough night tomorrow.

Re: Rodriguez comes in overweight.
Who do these guys think they are now? Really. They need to stop letting guys throw money in exchange for lack or professionalism
For every pound he comes in over, take a point when the opening bell rings!
-
Re: Rodriguez comes in overweight.
The title won't be on the line for Rodriguez, he can't win it but it probably counts as a defence for Ward for whatever that's worth. Honestly I think the fine is punishment enough here. Assuming Rogriguez actually tried to make the weight, not being able to put on more than 10 lbs overnight may also be quite punitive in the scheme of things. Considering that, if I were Ward I know I'd have let him come in 2 pounds heavy for an extra hundred grand. It's an easy fight for him anyways imo.

That's an excellent proposal. A financial penalty AND a penalty on the cards. It's brilliant. In fact it is such a brilliant suggestion that it will never be spoken of beyond boxing forums.
Honestly, I love the idea.

im always confused why HBO continues to way overpay all of their fighters. rodriguez hasnt done anything to deserve a million dollar purse. that is so much money for a fighter that hasnt really proven anything yet other than he is pretty good. and then ward, who is solidly the second best fighter in the world today barely gets over what rodriguez is making.
-
Re: Rodriguez comes in overweight.
Very unprofessional I was rooting for underdog Edwin but now I hope Ward punishes him dearly.
-
Re: Rodriguez comes in overweight.
Think your all being a bit naive here.
I think it was done on purpose. So what hes losing a bit of cash and wont have a title should he win.
If he wins hes instantly become a massive name and title or not hes beaten probably the second best boxer in the world today.
People count Wards win over Dawson, totally forgetting Dawson was asked to come down from light heavy and be a zombie, whether he agreed to it or not isnt the point, Dawson wasnt fighting at 100% and if Rodriguez wins, people will also forget about the weight and it will be a win over the second best fighter in the world.
I hope it pays off. Ward has had EVERYTHING in his favour over the past few years. Having fights bar Froch in California, every single one of his fights in America. Being allowed to foul to get through his fights, having idiots come down in weight and refusing certain drug tests.
Fuck Ward. I hope it is a a tactic by Edwin and I hope it pays off.
-
Re: Rodriguez comes in overweight.
First I agree with @Gandalf. @Spicoli 's point deduction idea is brilliant.
I dont like Ward. I dont like his SOG nic. I dont like his granola, squeaky clean persona. I dont like the way for whatever reason that outside of Atlantic city he was able to dodge the away games in the S6.
I dont like the way he was able to stack the deck with Cali judges and Cali refs. I dont like the way he was allowed to bring his head in the Kessler fight compounded by the fact that he was not warned once.
I dont like the way he continues to dismiss a rematch with Froch no matter what Carl has done to get back to the front of the line. I dont like the fact that he would not agree to a catch with Dawson, went ahead and fought half a man and then started speaking publicly about going to 175. I dont like his quotes prior to this fight saying that they thought Edwin would have weight problems because of his recent 172 catch with Grachev. To me its the view and history of a man unable or unwilling to meet people on an equal footing. That Olympian sense of entitlement.
This 9 a.m. 180 limit is freakin overkill. Ward will most likely be heavier then that. Both of these guys are lighthev's fighting a division south. Edwin is not a bigger man.
I agree with the belt not being on the line given the rules but I also agree with Houstons take on the scales as a whole these days.
Quote:
I’m starting to wonder if there is any point in having weight divisions. Why not just agree to fight at the championship weight “or anything from two to five pounds over?”
Graham Houston
I hope Edwin does the impossible and someone tries to play the 2 pound card. Shame that he probably had to stay up for most of the night or sleep in an Arctic star sleeping bag and continue to dehydrate.

Whos naive chief? Of course it was done on purpose and its becoming a regular event. Guys KNOW they can toss short term money at it and ensure more of a long term payoff. The practice is the win is more important than the money. It's just the point of arrogance when a kid who is basically a filler fight is pulling that crap.

That is a real good point and angle and one cant be blind to the fact that this shit is far to easy to pull these days and that's kind of Houstons point. Its unprofessional and Rodriguez probably knew the show would go on.

Well im glad someone isnt following on Wards terms. Yes I realise hes also not following the rules set in boxing but it has gone on so many times before its almost routine now.
Rodriguez team have taken a calculated risk. Less money, no title but a possible win over a top name. Out of all the fighters out there Ward deserves this sort of shit the most. Never travelling, never fighting a clean fight and then to top it all refusing tests.
Rodriguez isnt anything special anyway but at least hes better than a ratired alcoholic that Ward wanted to fight.
-
Re: Rodriguez comes in overweight.
Rules are rules and he should be penalized for it as should anyone who comes in heavy. At this level any edge can determine the victory. Everybody who thinks Ward should have taken the additional PED test should just as well be mad that Rodriguez didn't come in at the right weight. At this level it should be mandatory to take additional PED testing and punished if you don't come in at the right weight. But to the fight...I think people are writing Rodriguez off too soon. He now has established a weight advantage, he can punch, and I think he'll go under on Ward. Rodriguez should load up on hooks and straight rights to get Ward comfortable in his normal technical crouching mode and then start going under with power uppercuts. If I had to bet I think Ward would still figure Rodriguez out but I really think Rodriguez is going to make it really interesting.
-
Re: Rodriguez comes in overweight.
i feel like there are certain people who will always have something to complain about. i dont mind if somebody doesnt like a specific fighter for whatever reason but to complain about ward as a fighter is ridiculous. if it isnt a lack of good competition, its being boring. if its not about being boring, its about controversial tactics. if its not about that, its about home field advantage.
ward is and has been fighting the best for years now. that is a very rare thing in boxing now and people are still complaining. its as if the only way to be liked is to make sure that even if you are the best, you try to put yourself at the biggest disadvantage in every aspect and make sure you make little money.

Does Rodriguez and his camp have to be 'Super Criminals', with plans to snatch Wards crown and then take over all of boxing. Is it possible that Edwin just could not make weight?
Rodriguez would have been much, much better off if he had made weight, kept the 200 grand in his camp and tried to give Ward the fight of his life.
Now, you guys have me feeling sorry for the guy. He had this great opportunity to make a decent showing against a p4p fighter, but the whole thing is looking like a giant cluster fuck because he couldn't make weight. He is being fined and a bunch of boxing fans are pushing the line that the whole thing is some kind plot to gain, WHAT?
-
Re: Rodriguez comes in overweight.
I think either is a possibility, only Rodriguez knows whether he planned this or not. It's definitely possible that he decided not cutting weight would give him a much better chance to win, if he is confident of doing so then the fine certainly wouldn't outweigh what he would gain. On the other hand 200 grand is a hell of a lot of money for 2 pounds, as I said only he knows how tough it would have been to make the weight. I don't give him much chance at all anyways, this guy is way way to crude for Ward, it won't even be competitive imo.

I have no idea. Maybe he was deciding whether to go to 175 or not and then got this fight and fell into some kind of weight vortex. I mean how do you not make weight for the chance of glory, your first 7 figure payday and a chance at many more? Of all the fights to pull a major fail???

I don't buy at all he 'couldn't' make the weight. There is will, and there is won't. Won't is winning with ALOT of HBO guys lately. Rodriquez had an obligation to meet a contract and chanced not just a payday but the network that gave him the oppurtunity and fans.
His fight with Escalara over a year ago on hbo...he fattened up 21 lbs in 24 hrs time. He came in heavy with Don George...and his last fight was held at catchweight, flirting with lt heavy. The kid knew what direction his body was going and just how hard he'd work to manage it way before lastnight. He saw the payday, he calcualted it giving the showcase, and now he's having it both ways. There was a patteren. I hope Ward pounds him like a railroad spike if I'm honest. He may have threw the vada bs as a swerve in the first place.

That's definitely fair, if he's had trouble making weight before then this was probably calculated.

I mean, they know the network will carry the fight on. Its one thing for the mass names to do the throw money at it thing...Mayweather, Castillo, Broner on and on...but here??? Hbo had another kid who came in 20 lbs over, pretty much stunk it out with a draw...Jonathan Gonzalez... and he blew it as Lampley mentioned it on air later telecast, called out the "unprofessionalism"...his next 'oppurtunity' he was sent packing back to FNF saying "I'm serious this time" ffs. Hbo looked like fools.
