Glen Tapia rushed to trauma center after fight
Reports: Glen Tapia Rushed To Trauma Center After In-Ring Bludgeoning
I woke up this morning and the first thing I did was search Tapia's name, hoping that we wouldn't have another Abdusalamov situation, and found this.
Hopefully Tapia is fine, but his corner should be ashamed of themselves. Glen is a young kid who CLEARLY got overwhelmed and punched himself out early. He was completely gassed, bloody and defeated, and his corner kept throwing him out there to take more unnecessary punishment.
Even when the doctor came to examine a clearly defeated, concussed Tapia, his asshole trainer kept yelling "tell him you're fine and you wanna continue, Glen". I think it was pretty obvious to anyone who knows anything about boxing that Glen was done after at least round 3, and took at least 3 rounds of unneeded head trauma.
I'd be hard pressed to think of a more uncaring, sadistic corner. I had no issue with Abdusalamov's corner, because Abdusalamov was always in the fight, always throwing punches and moving forward. Nothing about his body language suggested he was a defeated man who needed to be protected. Glen's body language screamed "STOP THE FIGHT".
These kinds of uncaring fucks are going to get people killed in the ring, and eventually are going to start discussions for having boxing banned.
SHAME!
EDIT: Apparently he was released without issue, but I stick by what I said. He took way too much punishment and who knows what kind of effects that will have on him down the road.

Re: Glen Tapia rushed to trauma center after fight
Absolutely 100% correct. Nothing much more to add, BF.
-
I don't think the fight should of been stopped after the 3rd. But it should of been after the 5th.

Re: Glen Tapia rushed to trauma center after fight
Yea he was in bad shape for the last couple of rounds, and I fully agree about his corner, that was pathetic towards the end. I think the trouble is Kirkland is a guy you always have a prayer against, and that was a total must win fight for both. Tapia was able to hurt him with a hook or two that had nothing on them, while out on his feet! Kirklands assault is more or less wading in and throwing a lot of arm punches, I didn't think he looked good at all. Decent fight for first few rounds, but Kirkland will get KO'ed again soon if he looks to pick up a belt.

I agree, plus I think Kirkland is going to have a short career if he does not develop a defense. Like Tapia, he takes too many punches, right now his defense is his offense.

Re: Glen Tapia rushed to trauma center after fight
Great thread. I think you summed the situation up thoroughly.
And crews like that deserve such exposure to protect other fighters from these bastards and perhaps bring the spotlight on them by officials.

Re: Glen Tapia rushed to trauma center after fight
I'm really glad he has checked out and looks alright. Kid was in a blender after the 1st but I do think the ref, Dr. as well as corner shoulder this one. Smoger tells him "you cannot take severe head shots or I'll stop it" then he proceeds to take 3 minutes and is green lighted for another round after. The corner was wreckless and choked but the whole scenario went from glorious pumped up dramatic to crash course reality denied within 5,8 minutes of the fight. The officials let them lobby another chance and blinked on facts. Shame on all of em. Anytime the theme and fat mouth Lampley is proclaiming you "THE NEXT ARTURO GATTI" :p ffs. They all lost the plot in that one.

In the words of Larry Merchant... "We're not disagreeing enough" lol

Re: Glen Tapia rushed to trauma center after fight
I thought his corner was trying to get him killed. But also the doctor and Smoger should have stopped it before the final round. If you need a doctor in the ring in consectutive rounds it's pretty fucking obvious the guy isn't improving.

Re: Glen Tapia rushed to trauma center after fight
Smoger was a disgrace. I said it in the actual fight thread. Apart from the late stoppage when he stopped the fight he just pawed at them and meant Tapia took one huge unneccesary shot after Smoger had stopped the fight. U need to dive between the fighters to stop it.
Refs get stick for stopping fights too soon but Smoger should really be pulled up on this one. Smoger gives fighters every chance to show they can continue, he also gives them every chance to wind up brain dead.

Re: Glen Tapia rushed to trauma center after fight
i agree with this thread, but wasnt we all saying george groves should have been allowed to take more punishment last week?

It's not even in the same ball park (that's an American saying, I know you hate that stuff)
Tapia took a savage beating, so bad the ref was calling the doctor to check him between rounds.

What happened with Groves cant be compared to Tapia , Groves only took a few shots.
Kirkland broke the Compubox stats record which were all obviously landing on Tapias head and torso ;)

It's not so much an issue of the amout of punishment recieved, as it is someone being phsyically and mentally spent, and sent out to take more punishment.
Like I said before, I have absolutely no problem with Abdusalamov's corner not stopping the fight, even though he was taking a lot of flush bombs, because Abdusalamov was ALWAYS in the fight. He was pressing forward and throwing punches, and actively trying to win the fight.
From the 3rd round on (or maybe even earlier, I forget) it was evident that Tapia punched himself out and was gassed badly, so much so that he could no longer keep Kirkland at bay, and he was taking a plastering. If he still had the energy to fight on, I'd have no problem with his corner.
But his corner knew he was fucked and kept saying "I need you to get a second wind." Kirkland isn't going to give you a chance to get a second wind: he's going to club you to death.
When a man no longer has the will or the physical capabilities to fight on, the fight should be stopped.
Difference with Groves being of course that Groves was always in the fight. Even though he was hurt badly, he had the energy and will to fight on and win, so he should have been given a chance.

I feel bad for Tapia. Obviously he had a lot of pressure to go out there and perform in front of his home crowd and he took a fucking pounding.

Re: Glen Tapia rushed to trauma center after fight
Smoger wouldn't have stopped the Holocaust.
If Kirkland had punched Tapia's head clean off his body as long as the headless body was still throwing punches Smoger would have let the fight continue.

Missed this, anyone got a vid?

Yeah, and when he finally did stop it all he did was let Kirkland land another two flush bombs.
Boxing I think needs to take a que from MMA and try to get some younger, athletic refs in there. You got these tiny, fat old guys with their blunted reflexes trying to physically take control of two young beasts in the ring.

Hit the nail right on the head. I got no beef with Smoger. He's a veteran and has performed well enough in many other fights, including championship fights. But he's short, old, and dumpy. Three things you shouldn't be when you're in there with big, heavy punchers.

Re: Glen Tapia rushed to trauma center after fight
Fuck Kirkland for hitting Tapia like that after he clearly knew the fight was over. His lazy outta shape ass had to sink that low to get the KO. Fuckin pathetic.
I like Kirkland and was rooting for him to destroy this kid, but he behaved like a classless cunt. It was clear his "5 weeks" with Ann Wolfe was all catch up work for not being in shape. He was slow, sluggish, lacked power and unbelievably easy to hit.
His strategy of letting the guy wear out beating his ass in the first round worked again. Lucky for him he was fighting Tapia and not Lara or Trout. Or Cotto. Or Canelo....

I don't think the last punch Kirkland landed was a cheap shot. He was already throwing the punch when Smoger came between them. I don't hold it against him.

Re: Glen Tapia rushed to trauma center after fight
Corner men should protect there fighter,! Tapias bunch were a disgrace he was taking far to many
head shots, he was spent Tapia should dump them A holes.

Re: Glen Tapia rushed to trauma center after fight
Thaat was scary to watch. Failure to protect a guy on multiple fronts, that's been covered. I would have loved to see the ring doctor step in and tell Tapia's corner to shut the hell up.
They honored Eddie Hazzard a bit for his birthday on the telecast. He would have stopped that bout himself if he wasn't unjustly let go, he had done it before. Tired of passive commissions.

Re: Glen Tapia rushed to trauma center after fight
Havent watched it yet but saw a giff of the finish. It really did look like Smoger wanted him to get hurt, he had such a long look at Tapia, gave himself all the time in the world to stop it yet when he did fails to stop Kirkland landing a further two flush clumps. Insane.

I agree they were late, but I think it's easier said than done to go from complete kill mode to civilian mode in the span of a second.
It goes to my point though that it's not Kirkland's job to protect Tapia, it's the referees. If you look at the UFC fights, the referee is in there with authority to either get in between the fighters or physically grab a guy.
If they had a Herb Dean, Dan Mirgliotta, or Big John McCarthy in there, Kirkland doesn't land those extra shots.
I appreciate and respect Smoger's experience and knowledge, but that doesn't cut it alone IMO. You really need a younger, athletic guy with good reflexes. Someone who can really jump in there and assert himself physically.
Smoger is old, he's slow, and he was very tentative hesitant getting in between those guys.
-
I always liked Smoger as a referee until Murat vs Hopkins, where he allowed Hopkins to take control of the fight.
Now it seems Smoger can't make a decision by himself, if the ring doctor or a fighters corner will not stop the fight, neither will Smoger.
A referee has two primary concerns, protecting the fighters and enforcing the rules. Smoger has shown in Murat vs Hopkins and Tapia vs Kirkland that he can do neither.
Mr Smoger should retire or be retired, what he is supposed to do in the ring is too important to allow him to continue.
