Officially the only saddo who has had a girlfriend
3-Time SADDO PREDICTION COMP CHAMPION.
Fuck Kirkland for hitting Tapia like that after he clearly knew the fight was over. His lazy outta shape ass had to sink that low to get the KO. Fuckin pathetic.
I like Kirkland and was rooting for him to destroy this kid, but he behaved like a classless cunt. It was clear his "5 weeks" with Ann Wolfe was all catch up work for not being in shape. He was slow, sluggish, lacked power and unbelievably easy to hit.
His strategy of letting the guy wear out beating his ass in the first round worked again. Lucky for him he was fighting Tapia and not Lara or Trout. Or Cotto. Or Canelo....
"You knocked him down...now how bout you try knockin me down ?"
I agree they were late, but I think it's easier said than done to go from complete kill mode to civilian mode in the span of a second.
It goes to my point though that it's not Kirkland's job to protect Tapia, it's the referees. If you look at the UFC fights, the referee is in there with authority to either get in between the fighters or physically grab a guy.
If they had a Herb Dean, Dan Mirgliotta, or Big John McCarthy in there, Kirkland doesn't land those extra shots.
I appreciate and respect Smoger's experience and knowledge, but that doesn't cut it alone IMO. You really need a younger, athletic guy with good reflexes. Someone who can really jump in there and assert himself physically.
Smoger is old, he's slow, and he was very tentative hesitant getting in between those guys.
Wow, his corner knew he was dead tired and sent him out to take nearly 60 power punches a round from a real power puncher like Kirkland, that's just sadistic.
I feel bad for Tapia. Obviously he had a lot of pressure to go out there and perform in front of his home crowd and he took a fucking pounding.
Smoger wouldn't have stopped the Holocaust.
If Kirkland had punched Tapia's head clean off his body as long as the headless body was still throwing punches Smoger would have let the fight continue.
Missed this, anyone got a vid?
When God said to the both of us "Which one of you wants to be Sugar Ray?" I guess I didnt raise my hand fast enough
Charley Burley
Yeah, and when he finally did stop it all he did was let Kirkland land another two flush bombs.
Boxing I think needs to take a que from MMA and try to get some younger, athletic refs in there. You got these tiny, fat old guys with their blunted reflexes trying to physically take control of two young beasts in the ring.
It's not so much an issue of the amout of punishment recieved, as it is someone being phsyically and mentally spent, and sent out to take more punishment.
Like I said before, I have absolutely no problem with Abdusalamov's corner not stopping the fight, even though he was taking a lot of flush bombs, because Abdusalamov was ALWAYS in the fight. He was pressing forward and throwing punches, and actively trying to win the fight.
From the 3rd round on (or maybe even earlier, I forget) it was evident that Tapia punched himself out and was gassed badly, so much so that he could no longer keep Kirkland at bay, and he was taking a plastering. If he still had the energy to fight on, I'd have no problem with his corner.
But his corner knew he was fucked and kept saying "I need you to get a second wind." Kirkland isn't going to give you a chance to get a second wind: he's going to club you to death.
When a man no longer has the will or the physical capabilities to fight on, the fight should be stopped.
Difference with Groves being of course that Groves was always in the fight. Even though he was hurt badly, he had the energy and will to fight on and win, so he should have been given a chance.
I always liked Smoger as a referee until Murat vs Hopkins, where he allowed Hopkins to take control of the fight.
Now it seems Smoger can't make a decision by himself, if the ring doctor or a fighters corner will not stop the fight, neither will Smoger.
A referee has two primary concerns, protecting the fighters and enforcing the rules. Smoger has shown in Murat vs Hopkins and Tapia vs Kirkland that he can do neither.
Mr Smoger should retire or be retired, what he is supposed to do in the ring is too important to allow him to continue.
