Cotto got schooled by Trout.. how will he deal with Sergio
Let's just pretend that Sergio wont be affected by major knee operations and 14 months inactivity..
How will Cotto deal with that?

You can't pretend bro, that's what's great about boxing. Cotto comes out strong and if Martinez has the legs he will find a way around the attack and beat Cotto from the outside. If he doesn't and tries to fight Cotto the way he did against Chavez in the 12 round...night night Martinez

Re: Cotto got schooled by Trout.. how will he deal with Sergio
if we are assuming that sergio's knees will be fine and that his inactivity hasnt ruined him too much, then he KO's cotto. but im guessing that sergio wont be at his best so i think that cotto has an alright chance.

Who's the biggest, hardest hitting guy Cotto has been able to consistently back up with effect...??? I really like Cotto...but this whole lead up is getting twisted.

Can't see Cotto stopping him. Martinez May fade late tho. I predict a very one sided victory for Martinez which will bring back his hype and put some perspective on Murray's performance in argentina

Re: Cotto got schooled by Trout.. how will he deal with Sergio
Cotto is fighting for a place in boxing history, that will mean he will go all out for it. Sergio will be fit and strong by then as he is always in good condition. Sergio deserves the big pay days and i do not begrudge him these fights but eventually he will have to face GGG.

Re: Cotto got schooled by Trout.. how will he deal with Sergio
This fight works only on the wonder of how washed up Martinez actually is and how much he has left in the tank.
If this was 2010 Martinez, Cotto would get killed.

Yep. That's what the fight has going for it.

Martinez will have to face GGG eventually. But, Martinez has been out since 2012. GGG didn't really come into his own until beating Macklin and Stevens. It's not like Martinez has been avoiding him, as he hasn't fought due to injury since the Murray fight.
In his defense, Martinez had called for a Cotto fight long before Cotto-Trout or Cotto-Mayweather. If anyone around that weight class deserves a Cotto fight, its Maravilla.
If he beats Cotto though, will he earn himself a fight with Floyd?

Re: Cotto got schooled by Trout.. how will he deal with Sergio
Hopkins v Pavlik was a schooling. Trout v Cotto was not. In addition, Trout and Martinez fight nothing alike.
-
Re: Cotto got schooled by Trout.. how will he deal with Sergio
Sergio is going to beat the shit out of cotto till he quits on his stool
-
Re: Cotto got schooled by Trout.. how will he deal with Sergio
A small welterweight vs a small middleweight. Cotto loses this one on sheer size disparity and Cotto's already scarred soft tissue but im praying Cotto pulls off a Miracle.

It might not of been a schooling. But really it wasn't that close of a fight. Especially the last 4 rounds

its an interesting question. i never thought that a fight with martinez would ever happen but i can see floyd taking a chance on the fight now depending on how martinez looks. if he goes out there and somehow looks like the martinez of old then maybe not, but if he beats cotto in a close fight then i can see mayweather taking the fight.

Cotto is no bigger than Floyd. What does it say about Cotto if he faces Martinez before Floyd does?

That he's an opportunist thinkin he's catchin a vulnerable champ at the right time..
Martinez used to call cotto out constantly few years ago but got ignored... why is cotto getting brave now?
I dont know why some fans dont see this. Cotto aint fighting godzilla here..

Re: Cotto got schooled by Trout.. how will he deal with Sergio
It's still an extremely dangerous fight for Cotto, even if they have inside information that Martinez is in bad form after the injuries and layoff. Miguel is fighting a bigger man with KO power and faster hands who operates on a comparable skill level, and Cotto is past his best as well.
For this to be a competitive fight, imo, Cotto will have to be in much better form than he was against Trout, and Martinez will have decayed further than he showed in the Murray fight. Both quite possible, but it would detract from the fight as well.

For me Cotto's most underrated and important weapon works against him vs southpaws. That ramrod jab that he steps in with in order to get into range to land the left hook is going to get countered all night by Sergio's straight left - as long as his knee holds out. If it does then he'll move around looking for the angle where Cotto tries to work behind the jab but he can step in to the side with the straight left then scoot off to his blind spot, turn him and reset. A few founds off that then the right hook starts coming in over the top of a hesitant jab followed by a booming left. Then Cotto gets on his bike. Probably look a lot like the Pacquiao fight except he has the power to stop him with less punches. Either that or the knee is fucked and Cotto tries to box and out manouver Sergio. If this happens and the knee twists then the fight gets real interesting especially if Cotto banks some early rounds and Sergio doesn't have the mobility to move in and out behind the jab to the body and feints and is forced to fight on the inside where Cotto is at home.

This is a spot on analysis, and my biggest fear. Cotto's jab IS underrated. But Sergio is quick of hand, and well known for his accurate left hand counters. As you also said, Sergio has the power to hurt Cotto. I would add that Cotto's power may or may not bother Sergio all that much, depending on how much Cotto can get to Sergio's body. Cotto will certainly have to bring his "A-game" PLUS a specific strategy to deal with Martinez.

Come on Finito. All boxers are opportunists. Its part of their world and its more prevalent today then perhaps anytime in history. And I dont recall Sergio calling out Cotto ever and a few years ago he was still a welter. They are both damaged goods and this story has played out countless times. Even Robinson never fought one Murderers Row fighter until Wade and that was after Aaron had retired for close to 2 years. Leonard knew Duran was having weight issues and that's why he arranged the rematch for 6 months after the first.

I don't recall that either. But facts are besides the point here.

Re: Cotto got schooled by Trout.. how will he deal with Sergio
I don't recall Sergio calling out Cotto either but this is a terrible matchup for Cotto. Miguel likes to impose himself physically, he can't do that against Sergio. Miguel likes to offset rhythms with his ramrod jab, won't happen vs a southpaw. Cotto doesn't avoid punches, he counts on his guard to catch them. The gap between his guard is specifically open to a southpaws left cross just by position of his guard. So Miguel hunches against southpaws making him even more open to the uppercut than normal.
Miguel will be significantly smaller, significantly slower, have less power and just by style be open to attack. Not a good combo. Miguel has been hurt many times against southpaws for a reason. Bob is getting paid and making sure nobody else does after. This is the end of Miguels career.

Re: Cotto got schooled by Trout.. how will he deal with Sergio
Gotta agree with Ron, spot on. More I think about this one all I see is a gutty Cotto driving into one way traffic. It's Martinez picking Cotto as a comeback opponent, not the other way around as has been suggested.

Exactly, this is a real challenge for Cotto. He's a 5'7" blown up welter fighting for the middleweight championship against a very good champion. Neither man is in his prime either.

I've always respected Cotto for his courage, and for the way he carries himself, but I've never enjoyed watching him fight. He just gets hit way too much.
Even if Miguel could somehow win this fight, I don't see any way he doesn't sustain a hellacious beating in the process, unless Martinez somehow injures himself.

yet Canelo trying to get a fight against Cotto while Miguel is reaching the end of his career is a case of a young fighter looking for a tough fight right?! transparent as fuck dude
