Tell me why isn't mayweather, manny, canelo, ggg, the other good middle weight (can't remember his name now), or any other top fighter not running at the opportunity to dethrone Martinez after his surgery's if he's done for? I get it people say cotto is catching him at the right time but he is the smallest person that could be fighting him other then manny and is getting shit on!? The truth is Martinez is the best middle weight right now and cotto is making his first fight at middle weight against the best middle weight out there. There is nothing cowardly about this.
A lot of people would disagree and suggest Golovkn is the best middleweight right now and few would give Cotto a chance vs him. Sergio hasn't impressed in a while and struggled with Murray but he is a title holder so it's a big fight.
Cotto deserves credit for taking this fight. Had Martinez looked his best in recent fights I don't think the fight would have been signed. Signs are it will happen, Cotto will make history picking up a MW title but it's a big gamble if Martinez
isn't as washed up as he thinks he is because there's a chance his style could make Cotto look silly
I was ok with your thoughts until then. I mean maybe Martinez would not entertain fighting the prime Cotto either. It could have been made when Cotto was at 147 and he was at 54. Leonard perhaps would not have fought the Hagler pre his 3 year hiatus. One could make the case that Leonard waited him out. Armstrong most likely would not have fought Garcia at that time for the fractured mid title had he not seen something. Armstrong was just over 140 for the weigh in btw.
Boxing is as much about timing outside the ring with matchmaking as it is about inside the ring. That has played out throughout history and clearly plays out today. This is going to be a great fight.
Ps-I was a little ticked off when I learned earlier last week that one of the major stumbling blocks was whose name appears first on the billboard.
Actually, Martinez did call him out many times around 3 years ago at 154 but heard nothing but crickets from cotto's camp..
He was still traumatized from the margarito beating and was looking to rematch him at a catchweight of " 151 "..
Ha!
You stick out like a fly in a glass of milk with your Cotto hate... pretty much alone in this thread. You can't even disguise your hate... saying damned if he does... damned if he doesn't. Butt-hurt as all hell because he turned down Ginger Boy, when Ginger Boy has done NOTHING in his career but one good victory against a meek Austin Trout. If Cotto wins, it's not because he's good, but because he picked on an old, washed-up Martinez. If he loses... well... we all know you'll be first at the feeding frenzy line. ;)
You know, you'd be more respected if you just came out and admitted your loathing of Cotto, instead of trying to sneak in comments about his loss to the cheating, disgraced Margarito and passing them off as some sort of boxing knowledge. I got your number, little boy.... a LONG TIME AGO.
My question to you is, and always HAS been......... where does Cotto stand in boxing today?
And where does Marga-cheato stand?
The defense rests.
;)
