NFL star suspended for two games for knocking wife unconscious
Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice got suspended by the NFL for two games for knocking his wife unconscious. This has created a huge uproar around the sports community and the general public, especially among those who marvel that the suspension for getting caught with weed is four games, while Rice gets a 2-game suspension.
Here's the latest:
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's punishment for Ravens RB Ray Rice shows he is inconsistent - NY Daily News
The general consensus is that the NFL is sending a dangerous messasge regarding spousal abuse.
Thoughts?

Re: NFL star suspended for two games for knocking wife unconscious
Guys in the NFL, just like guys in boxing have brain damage. So, you can't really expect them to act rationally all the time. It is what it is.

Re: NFL star suspended for two games for knocking wife unconscious
I don't think any athletic commission should be acting as a moral authority in the first place, to be honest. If this guy seriously assaulted his wife, it's a criminal matter and he should be tried, possibly serve some time or probation etc, then the NFL can decide how to act based on what is legally pending. What they have to say about it before the fact is and should be completely irrelevant, and it speaks to how silly people are about sports. If one a)believes this guy is guilty as charged, and b) puts their faith in the NFL to determine his punishment, they may as well go knock themselves unconscious imo. How many days of work do you think the average person deserves to miss for assaulting their wife? Not exactly the way things should work.

Re: NFL star suspended for two games for knocking wife unconscious
That's the world we live in. Beat a woman unconscious? 2 game suspension.
Get caught using racist/homophobic/ect LANGUAGE? You've lost your job.

Re: NFL star suspended for two games for knocking wife unconscious
Didn't Richie Incognito face a much longer suspension for saying/texting the word "nigger"? But then again, I guess that's much more harmful than physically beating a woman into unconsciousness. Ugh.

Political correctness trumps all these days.
I believe if there is enough outrage over this incident the player will end up with a harsher punishment.
No criminal charges?

No no no not for JUST saying that but for also "Being a bully"
You see Michael Sam and everyone bending over backwards to make certain NOBODY offends him and NOBODY makes fun of him and you see what Tebow went through with the media and the difference between the two...it's ridiculous.
I have started to wonder when a "Mercy Rule" will be brought about...you see how ESPN bitches about preseason warmup football games for various colleges and universities.
Oh and don't even get me started on the fucking Redskins and that PC shitstorm

You raise a good point. But.... is it that clear cut and dry? Can the NFL afford to wait and do nothing while the public outcry increases? True... the NFL, nor any pro league, is a moral authority. But they are held accountable by the public to set an example for society's youth. How would this go down in a regular workplace? A high visibility company exec gets accused of knocking his wife unconscious. Does the company go on "business as usual" until the courts decide? It may not be a similar situation... but the question is still worth asking.
Bottom line... I think it's a tough judgement call sometimes when a high-profile pro athlete commits a crime. How much punishment is enough? Do you carry on while the legal system does its thing? How do you handle the press and the fans? We can all armchair judge it... but until it's one of us in that spot... we can't imagine how difficult it must be to do the "right" thing.

Back at you, touche sir. I guess I was being more idealistic with my point, since I don't personally think athletes should have the celebrity status or impact they do away from their sport. If a high profile athlete commits a crime they should face trial the same way any other person who commits crimes SHOULD. Fact is they are unfortunately public figures and role models to many, so the commissions have to act accordingly I'm sure. If this huge man really knocked a woman spark out, then there would be no punishment the NFL could hand out that would be enough in my eyes, is the thing.
As shady as boxing is, I kind of like the way little is made out of fighters actions outside of the ring. Mayweather beats women and goes to jail ever few years for it as he should. It doesn't affect his profession, hopefully in part because people realize he is a very unsavory person to begin with. I'm sure it does have more to do with the sport having no central commission and a much lower profile/smaller youth fanbase though, I do hear ya.

I think you hit the nail on the head with your comparison of major team sports, like the NFL, to boxing. Mayweather is the poster child for that, as you say. He hits a woman... he does time... he comes out, and resumes his boxing career. No one in their right mind would ever mistake Floyd for a role model.
I really don't know what the right thing for the NFL to do is. Nothing? They'd catch hell for it. Yet... anything they do, if ahead of the legal system, is going to be severely second-guessed. It's a tough position to be in.

Re: NFL star suspended for two games for knocking wife unconscious
Un fucking believable. Suspended for 2 games? The NFL had a chance to make a statement and said fuck it. Didn't Michael Vick get 2 years for dog fighting? The NFL has it's head straight up it's ass.

Very good, logical post.
I don't think a player should be banned for knocking out his wife either. Now if you attacked another player in a game, then sure, the authorities can ban you and legal action can be taken too. But something outside of that is personal and I don't think your job is a 24 hour one. That's why I am also against workplace drug and medical checkups, I just don't think it should be any of their business. If you are doing your job, then that is enough. If you hit your wife and she wants to sue you and divorce you, then that is cool too. I hate the media and how they try to make stories about nothing and this is another of those. That one about the racist team owner was another non-story. Mainstream media is beyond pathetic.
I don't think anybody has the right to hit any other person. We can say things heatedly, but when it comes down to it, unless somebody tries to attack you, then you should never lay a finger on another person. Hitting somebody else is the ultimate sign of weakness and loss of control. Knocking your wife out is one of the worst things you can do, but the result of that is up to the wife to decide. It should have nothing to do with your boss. I don't see how they are connected....unless the wife is also the boss perhaps?

Re: NFL star suspended for two games for knocking wife unconscious
All in all a man that knocks his wife unconscious is a shit bag, funny enough my son
showed me pictures of Floyds wife, god did he give her a hiding.
Yes chaps they may be Kings of there sport, but as human beings go they are low lives,
do they deserve to be sports icons maybe.
Descent human beings I think not, sometimes we get blinded by there status I for one
would not want my daughter married to one of theses fuckers.
-
Re: NFL star suspended for two games for knocking wife unconscious
Have him charged with assault, put him in the nick for a month. He loses his games that way. The wife can them divorce him and he is then banned for missing the jail time games. Win, win, situation.

Re: NFL star suspended for two games for knocking wife unconscious
And what's the punishment for the wife? Who is said to have thrown the first punch. Nothing. There is no punishment for her. 2 game suspension is way to long. This was not an NFL issue. They should of stayed out of it

I agree. Should of gone with the open hand approach instead of the closed one
No mater what I've been married 27years today, and I have never hit my wife, So Rice got
disrespected by his wife, the sted head fucker Ko's her, people talk about respect they don't
no the meaning of the word. Remember when you get married, it's supposed to be a person you love,
if I want a punch bag, I go to Everlast. I no a few Cunts that have Knocked there wife's about, I remember a guy call mad Reg, he would knock hell out of his wife, she left him about 2 years after
he broke into her house, started to beat her up, she put a knife in his heart.
I new Reg he was mad no he was fucking crazy really, that poor women had a life of hell, you don't
have to be a superstar to be a wife beater JUST A CUNT.
So if your wife would feel the need to use you as a punching bag, you'll be ok with it?
My wife does not, come on were talking about a stedhead brut and a pro boxer, it's okay to Knock
your wife about if you think so you got a problem, as I said it could be your daughter or sister would
that go down well I don't think so. Remember because we are fans sometimes we except there bad

Since the release of this video Ray Rice has been cut by the Ravens and suspended by the NFL indefinitely.
I wonder how long before he blames head injuries for his short temper?

What they have to say about it before the fact is and should be completely irrelevant, and it speaks to how silly people are about sports. If one a)believes this guy is guilty as charged, and b) puts their faith in the NFL to determine his punishment, they may as well go knock themselves unconscious imo. How many days of work do you think the average person deserves to miss for assaulting their wife? Not exactly the way things should work.
We want to be so damn technical about things, we lose the humanity of it all. Yeah... so it's up to the law-enforcement authorities to do something about incidents like Ray Rice's KO-ing of his wife. The NFL should stay out of things, unless it includes on-the-field incidents. That's all nice and sweet, but.....
BULLSHIT. Goodell first of all was big enough to admit that the 2-game suspension first handed out to Rice was inadequate, in the face of all the criticism he and the NFL received. The NFL does not operate in a vacuum. It caters to fans... many of the very young and impressionable variety. How many young boys out there would see that play out like it did at first... watch graphic videos of Rice knocking out his then-fiancée... and get a slap on the wrist from the league. Worst yet.... see the guy welcomed back with open arms by his team and his fans.
Anyone can make a mistake. But Rice's mistake was huge. Some here will joke around that he should've used an open hand... or he should've just jabbed instead of throwing a hook. But is it really that funny? How must the woman's family feel? How about the real problem of spousal abuse? Trying to make up ground and working to resolve a very real problem... how about those people?
I'm gonna say it again. Goodell earns whatever money they pay him. He's got to deal with the media circuses surrounding every time a player takes a dump in the wrong place. He gets second-guessed left and right. Too lenient... too strong.
The NFL is not your typical workplace... so quit trying to draw parallels. Professional athletes are entertainers. They get paid ridiculous amounts of money to play a game... and all we ask in return is that they refrain from being wife-beaters, drug-addicts, or habitual law-breakers. What a tough job!
Will the NFL get every decision right? Of course not. But they've shown the balls to go back and reverse their field when they feel they've gotten it wrong. It's the most human and thoughtful thing to do.

Yeah, I see your point. It's not that difficult to restrain yourself from knocking out your wife.

Re: NFL star suspended for two games for knocking wife unconscious
At the end of the day, a company has the right to terminate an employee if they are engaging or have engaged in activity that would cast the company in a negative light. The NFL doesn't want people thinking of murderers and woman beaters when it thinks of football players, and I think his termination was just their way of undoing the bad press they got for only suspending him 2 games.

Re: NFL star suspended for two games for knocking wife unconscious
I've been in the same situation as Rice though, and I'm sure most guys probably have, where you have a woman antagonize you and antagonize you, even start attacking you, and you see red and want more than anything in the world to hit her in that second. But I think in any civilized person, there should be some barrier in your head that won't let you do it. For a guy like Ray Rice to hit her so hard to knock her out, or a guy like Chris Brown to do a prolonged beating on Rihana... that's just savage, criminal behaviour.

Re: NFL star suspended for two games for knocking wife unconscious
The following is the truth....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlvvCYUDHrQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsq1bmVaR3Y
The problem is women WILL push you to the brink and then complain about you "shutting down" ...."Well he just won't talk to me, he just shuts down" etc....it's difficult to be the calm one, it's difficult to keep your emotions in check and men especially athletes use emotion to supplement motivation in their sports, so it's not surprising that Ray Rice to wind up doing that but it doesn't make it acceptable.
Jay-Z handled a similar situation with his sister in-law MUUUUUCH better

Nothing annoys me more than the moronic saying a man should never hit a women. I agree with a man should never hit a women for no reason. Any man that does that is a coward. But if the women is stupid enough to actually hit first than she should be brave enough to take what comes in return. They don't want to get hit than don't hit. It's that simple. My mom never hit me growing up. So what the fuck makes any female think she can? The lack of common sense just boggles the mind

Re: NFL star suspended for two games for knocking wife unconscious
I've watched that video a few times and I can't quite tell who instigates the physical altercation. Right before she gets ko'd she is charging him and swinging. I think it is important to differentiate between a spouse that beats their spouse and when two people get in a fight. A person that regularly intimidates and physically assaults their spouse to me is different than what happens when a married couple has an argument that escalates to violence. We wouldn't even be talking about this if the roles were reversed. If this was Serena Williams instead of Rice nothing would happen. I don't antagonize people that can beat me within an inch of my life. Men shouldn't use their often natural advantage of strength and size against women but women should understand that there is a line and once they cross it they have stepped into a man's world. Regardless, Ray Rice isn't entitled to his employment. From a PR perspective, I think the Ravens and the NFL have done the right thing.

Re: NFL star suspended for two games for knocking wife unconscious
For sure she was antagonizing him, I believe she started the physical with a slap to his face outside the elevator. Wasn't a hard slap by any means but when someone slaps you in the face and walks away nonchalantly, it's going to fire you up.
When you're with a girl for long enough, you get to know how she deals with things (fights, pressure, not getting her way, stress, ect). There are women who will antagonize you and get off on conflict and pushing your buttons until you see red, and I think it's a responsibility to cut someone like that off. In this age of "anti-victim blaming" nobody wants to talk about the antagonist or what role the victim might have played in their assault. People (regardless of gender/race/whatever) need to keep their hands off of each other.
