Run-clinch-dance-grab: at some point should fighters be DQ'ed?
I am so sick of fighters just dancing about the ring, throwing no punches, holding, clinching, grabbing, running, burning the clock, and not losing points over it.
Shouldnt there be a minimum number of punches a fighter needs to throw per round? 3 minutes = 180 seconds, I say if a fighter doesnt throw 30 punches a round he should lose 1 point, and if he continues to throw less than 30 for 3 consecutive rounds he should be disqualified.
Also if a fighter spends more than 30 seconds in clinches/hugs per round he should lose a point. And be DQ'ed if he does that for 3 consecutive rounds.

I remember when Akinwande got DQ'd for holding on Lennox for the whole fight. We need more of that!

Re: Run-clinch-dance-grab: at some point should fighters be DQ'ed?
I would really like to see something done about excessive clinching and holding. It gets out of hand in so many fights. Also, rabbit punching to the back of the head has become an excepted tactic. Some of these issues could easily be remedied if refs did their jobs.

Funny thing about that is Akinwande actually floored Lewis in that fight. But it was ignored due to all his hugging and holding.

Re: Run-clinch-dance-grab: at some point should fighters be DQ'ed?
You could argue that there is a skill in not letting people clinch you all fight.
It really doesn't happen that much, or at least no where near often enough to annoy me.
But there are some hugfests I have hated in the past.

Re: Run-clinch-dance-grab: at some point should fighters be DQ'ed?
Im not sure on this. I completely get what everyone is saying but what about the guys who come in real low to get on the inside and then throw their heads around using it as a weapon? Thats not exactly fair for the more skilled boxer.

Re: Run-clinch-dance-grab: at some point should fighters be DQ'ed?
Most fighters do it, remember getting annoyed at Vernon Forrest doing it against Shane in their second fight. Hatton did it a lot later in his career. It is up to the ref. Get Mills Lane type and they will not do it.

Re: Run-clinch-dance-grab: at some point should fighters be DQ'ed?
I think that the refs should let guys fight out of the clinch more. There is a skill to fighting inside, and some of that comes from maneuvering a guy into certain position through the clinch. The issue is that guys tie a fighter up and both just wait for the ref to break them. Watch John Ruiz, a notorious clincher, fight James Toney. James was the first guy I saw who didn't whine to the ref or just sit in the clinch with Ruiz and he would punish him inside. Watch old school fighters everyone says are ATGs like Robinson and Duran. They would clinch in close much like Ward and a Hopkins today. There is a skill involved when done correctly.

Re: Run-clinch-dance-grab: at some point should fighters be DQ'ed?
It's strange a guy like Hopkins is put on a pedestal, as a amazing fighter he is one of the worst fighters
for clinching and grabbing, truly horrible fighter to watch, but the refs love him they are to much
into licking his ass, than deducting him any points.

I think BHop is cute about it and it is not excessive.

Re: Run-clinch-dance-grab: at some point should fighters be DQ'ed?
I think more than half of all holding is or becomes a mutual agreement as a fight goes. You can work out or capitalize, become a learned counter as you sure know where a guys hands are...and that the head is open. Start stepping on feet! Not big on yet another official put into place to count punches or holds. Refs just have to be the boss...take a page from the Jack Reiss book like Bike v Dirrell 2
"Come on man, what both of you guys are doing is shit" ;D

I agree with you, it seems like the referees are too eager to jump in during a clinch. I know there is no other option in some fights but I like to see them work out of a clinch if they can.
I can understand why everybody hates the clinching, when it's excessive it's ruins a fight.

Re: Run-clinch-dance-grab: at some point should fighters be DQ'ed?
Refs need to start taking points away for timidity, I agree 100%.
It would decrease the amount of stinking fights we see and would be better for boxing.

That is right it would bring about better fights because excessive use of holding ruins fights. Wlad v Povetkin was one of the worst example.

Yes it was.
The ref who allowed Wlad to grab onto Povetkin since the opening bell, is at the same level of ineptitude and/or corruption as CJ Ross when she saw Mayweather-Canelo end in a tie.

Yes it was horrible. It's a sad state when clinches far surpass punches landed.
I understand fighters need to show defensive prowess as well, but there needs to be a certain level of offence expected as well.
We need to create and enforce rules that will protect the spirit of the sweet science. Guys who fight excessively timid and or/just to survive need to be penalized.
In the UFC if a guy is just laying on or hugging a guy without doing damage, they'll stand them up. If guys are fighting timid, they can be warned and have points taken away. I think boxing needs to look at doing that!

If a guy is hugging you excessively, you should be allowed to mauy thai elbow him in the face. ;D

Re: Run-clinch-dance-grab: at some point should fighters be DQ'ed?
It's perfectly legal to punch someone too. I've never understood one fighter blaming another for totally shutting down their offence because they were hugging etc. I wouldn't apply mandatory strike counts or such. They do that crap in karate

Fighters normally don't blame the other..... fans do. But each time I watch Wlad-Povetkin (I really don't), the more I think the least Povetkin should've been allowed to do is knee Wlad in the groin. That would've solved that problem. If the ref's gonna be MIA, he should be MIA for both fighters.

To be fair to Haye when he fought Wlad he fell on his knees a lot to stop the clinching. :)

Foot stomps and nut shots above all us in worse case scenario :-X. That's why I don't mind a guy working a refs blindside. If your opponent is going to offer a clinch, tie that arm up and wail away with the other. In Wlads case just surprised juice-box Povetkin didn't step around and let him fall forward. Wlad was literally a wet blanket there.

Re: Run-clinch-dance-grab: at some point should fighters be DQ'ed?
A lot of times many of these rules aren't even enforced.... Some refs just allow too much grabbing/holding which infuriates me to no end.... Move your feet/head and keep your guard up to avoid punches and also to get yourself into position to punch..... From my youth boxing coach: for every punch there's a counter and for every counter there's a punch..... IMHO punches landed should always win the day but that's not always how things tun out in the boxing ring....

Re: Run-clinch-dance-grab: at some point should fighters be DQ'ed?
Ali should have lost 3 points in Frazier 2 and probably been DQ'ed by the 9th.
