Thurman is a strange one for me. I have been thinking hes going to be the next big thing but I rewatched his fight against Chaves and he really struggled in spells against a limited opponent, I do think putting him in with better competition will bring out the best of him but I think Manny at this stage is a step too far. Id have 3 fights before that in this order:
Brandon Rios
Guerrero or Porter
Alexander or Bradley.
3 wins against this competition would prepare him for a jump into the elite group. Also give Manny another year to slow down
well now that the possibility of the porter fight has been spoiled by brook. Its time to start building something. Apparently if Manny will fight Algieri.. it means he'll fight anyone. Thurmans claiming to be promotionally independent now. So shouting manny's name is probably his way of trying to get his foot in the door at top rank, knowing Arums MO is to make matches within his stable first to keep the money in house. If nothing else, the work is steady....
Pretty sure Manny has never fought a true welterweight on as much as a 3 fight win streak so....
Thurman is too green at this point. He needs fights vs Porters, Brooks, Khan type fighters to build his resume. Then fight some Bradley type fighters n then go to Gloyd or Manny. I wouldn't even feel good about putting him in with Zmarquez at this point. Kid has to build his experience base up more before going into deep water with guys used to competing at the elite world class level.
Thurman should take a long concentrated look at the lead up and event between Brook v Porter. Soak it in. In a way I believe Porter served as the sacrificial point man for both reading the headlines, rushing ahead and suffering swollen head syndrome. Walk...then run.

As for fighting solid competition, hard to argue with the names on those guys' resumes as they have two if the best (resumes) around. You never know though, I thought Qawi and Hopkins would be too experienced while Evander and Jermain Taylor would be too inexperienced before their first fights n I was wrong (maybe not with Taylor!!!), so I'm good with the fights happening n think they should. There's a long history of green fighters beating experienced men that were even better than them. We revere the older fighters for what they have done meanwhile try to conceive reasons to deny the newer fighters an opportunity to achieve. There is almost no chance Thurman will be as good as Marquez or PAC but he is big, young, and strong. These factors give him a chance against these versions of Marquez/PAC. I'd even pick him with relative confidence against Marquez now and Marquez is easily my favorite of the three. Eventually with all youth is served.
I can see your point of view, but it just seems to me that, more often than not, a guy like Thurman jumping that high in class that fast usually falls well short and never fulfills his potential/promise as a fighter. I think of David Reid fighting Tito Trinidad and never being the same. Michael Grant getting blown out by Lennox n being finished as a fighter. Jorge Luis Gonzalez getting annihilated by Bowe. Kelly Pavilik and TVoris Cloud against Hopkins. Lacy being dominated by Calzaghe. The list goes on and on. You may be right and Thurman May be too big and too good for both guys. I hope you are right if they fight, because he seems like a good guy and is exciting which would be great for the future of the sport. I would hate to see him rushed and ruined at an early stage of his career though...

This theory is supported by the many fighters that become great after losing. Sure some guys are ruined in their first loss, but that doesn't mean everyone should be protected from that first loss. Some guys are ruined in wins. Getting hurt in fight sports is part of the deal. If he's a better opponent than the other options he should be considered.

Ron, I have to disagree (respectfully) that careers aren't ruined after just one fight. Meldrick Taylor is a great example of this phenomena after his fight with JC Chavez. He was never the same again after that fight. Donald Curry is another example of a guy who looked like an ATG and then fell apart after suffering just one loss. This is not to say that one loss ruins all fighters. The guys you listed and many others were able to learn and come back stronger, but in my eyes those guys are the exception and not the rule. Either way, you make a valid point about Thurman being a step up and more worthy than Algeri, and I hope that Thurman eventually gets the big fights he is after. We will see how it turns out for him...
