Great Defeats

Ever watched a fight where the loser gained your respect?

For me its:

Holyfield vs Bowe I
Jackson vs McCellan I

I rooted for Holy, but Bowe's game IMO would never be more tight. Round 10 was an OMG round.
Holy was defeated, but gained respect in the boxing world. He went from being called the Real-Deal to the Warrior.

Gman & The Hawk fought in a 1/2 empty arena throwing bombs at each other. In fact it was billed as "Bombs Away."

When it was all over Julian was defeated, but it took a greater fighter to beat him. No shame in either losses.

Bradley v Prod. Prod should have won that fight by TKO or at least points but Bradley was amazing that beating he took.

Leonard/Duran 2.

It took a lot of guts for Duran to quit due to a tummy ache. Hey, you don't fuck around with your stomach man! ;D

A really recent example, JoeverJoebert Alvarez. He was expected to have the crap beat out of him bby Gallo Estrada but was competitive through out. The scorecards were raw to say the least.

Eubank v Calzaghe and V Thompson. In my opinion , in his prime , he was boring to watch, poncing around the ring not throwing anything . but when he was at the end of his career and could've easily gave in against the odds , he battled hard and gave everything.

Hagler vs Hearns. I show that fight as an example to my kids prior to big events/matches. Hearns lost the fight but in no way could he be described as a loser. Both guys laid it all out there for the fans. Humbling performance by both...

Jackson was winning that fight for nearly 3 rounds until he got a head butt. He then gets knocked out and again in the rematch but he was in control in that fight. Reminds me a bit like Mosely against Forrest he was winning until the head butt.

Pretty hard to top Sam Mcveys efforts on that foggy night in Paris 1909 against Joe Jeanette in that close to 4 hour marathon that went close to 50 rounds.

I became a Jackson fan after he beat Herol Graham my favourite fighter and his timing was incredible. He was busting up Gerald but I am not saying it may have stayed that way. Jackson had serious eye trouble and I am sure it affected him.

Shane got knocked down almost immediately after the butt.

Rafael Marquez vs Israel Vazquez

fights II & III.
The ebb & flow was so constant, I remember thinking in fight 2: whoever wins, give the loser a rematch. Got to be a rubbermatch.

I've always wanted to see Mayorga beat. he takes a great beating! LOL, But admit I thought he showed valor against Tito, especially when he got a knockdown scored.

Paulie Malignaggi vs Cotto

Speaking of Pillow-punching Paulie, I once saw the lightest hitting fighters meant for each other, but I admit it was entertaining & actually ended in a draw. I think I had Spaddy winning it, but felt his foe put on a hell of a show

Paul Spadafora vs Leonard Dorin

Armand Kranjc vs Paolo Roberto. Was a big fight here in Sweden. Armand the proud champ, Paolo the trash-talking bully. He almost put Armand to sleep in the first round. The other 11 Armand beat him very bad, but Paolo stood up and took the punishment as a man. Hurt and all, never went down. But the beating was bad. I despised Roberto, but after this fight I got respect for the man. Now he is a sucessful buisnessman. Armand suffered from bad management, brain hemmorrhage, losses to Harry Simon and Sven Ottke. But he came back and won a swedish reality series with other sports profiles.

Mugabi-Hagler. The "Beast" gained respect for his showing.


Jimmy Young for his showing against both Norton and Ali.

Barely out of high school Bones Adams, busted jaw and all vs Orlando Canizales.

Judah vs Danny Garcia. Love him or hate him..Judah put it on him!

Judahs best fight might have been his loss to Cotto. Shane's against Cotto was valiant also but he simply ran out of rounds.

I remember a british fighter, Richard Evatt, giving Junior Jones a real battle back around 2000ish (presume it was a Naz undercard).

Evatt had him down twice before losing late on by getting kayoed himself (may even have been last round). He must have been ahead on cards too.

Sadly I read a couple of years ago that Evatt had died in a homeless shelter :-\

Wayne McCullough and In-jin Chi against Morales. Even though they clearly lost on the cards the fights were fantastic. Two complete and utter mentals that wont stop coming

Had totally forgot this. Mark is right he did sadly die in a shelter, so I read just now. Seeing the pictures of him in his tiger shorts/poncho really brings back memories of that late mid to late 90s era that was my introduction to boxing.

Matthew Saad Muhhamad vs Yaqui Lopez

Lopez feels it's his last shot at a title, just a great effort, And Round 8, was round of the year. Great losing effort, he brought his ass to the table in this clip!!

Ken Norton IMO would never give a greater effort thann his first & only title defense. Back n forth action for 14 rounds...and then they both come out in round 15, like they had stamina to blow. No shame in the way Norton loss this fight.

I wouldn't put the Taylor fight because in theory he won. Just a miserable decsion on Steele's part. And he rightfully was removed from top level fights after that.

Vargas nor Taylor were the same, but man, it still hurts me to this day thinking about that stoppage. Vargas lost...but you're right he went out on his shield.

Chavez even stated post fight Meldrick was landing 3 to his 1. Yes Taylor pissed blood and yes he was battered, but 2 seconds?:eek:

Yes that must hurt if you were a Taylor fan. I loved Chavez and thought it was a fair stoppage.

I thought Tito did some dirty fighting against Vargas.

Roy gained my admiration and respect with how he handled his "loss" in the 88 Olympics. That guy dominated and he showed nothing but class when he was completely screwed by the judges. Not sure how many guys on here ever met Roy but he is a genuinely good man and unbelievably down to earth (or was the few times I met him).

I think I was more pissed than Roy was when it happened. I actually wondered if RJJ would turn pro after that noon-of-day robbery he suffered.

Hows about when Shannon 'Lets go champ' Briggs got beat up consistently for 12 rounds against big Klit?

He was basically a human punch bag but he refused to go down and he refused to give up even though if I remember his face was a mess and the ref was still looking to stop the fight with 10 seconds to go.

He showed some real heart in that fight
