Larry Merchant was a Great Commentator
He got a lot of flack for his occasional babbling after fights and his unfair criticism for overhyping network favorites during fights (that was 100% Lampley), but during the actual fights he was great to listen to and often saw fights the way the viewer did with very little partiality. For example, I clearly remember him stating that he had Whitaker beating De La Hoya after their fight ended.
I never really had a problem with him, especially considering fact he had to mesh with Lampley's antics

Re: Larry Merchant was a Great Commentator
I didn't really like him but he did have better scorecards than Howard Ledderman.
'I gotta tell ya Jim...' *MUTE*
-
Nope. He couldn't be bothered with the science of the sweet science. If you are going to announce a sport you have to learn to appreciate the nuances of said sport. He was a drunken fool. If that is a reflection of the fan base then what are the rest of us that like more than one style?

Re: Larry Merchant was a Great Commentator
Merchant was awesome!! you peeps are crazy. he was funny, witty & was the only one who told Floyd Gayweather off! larry = one of the best ever!
-
Re: Larry Merchant was a Great Commentator
I would say he was a good interviewer of boxers who liked to poke them.
His commentary were not that insightfull from boxing perspective, but yes he did score bouts quite well.
He was biased in several occassions, but overall I think he was professional enough.

Homophobia from a vamp guy, the irony is so sweet it has to be fattening.

Re: Larry Merchant was a Great Commentator
Agreed, Merchant was very good. I always liked his voice and take on things. When he said if he was fifty years younger I'd kick your ass to Floyd it was one of the high points of Gayweathers career
-
Re: Larry Merchant was a Great Commentator
Nah I agree with Ron, he was shitty, at least for the last many years of his career. Way to bloodthirsty and would practically refuse, or wasn't capable of calling the action if a fight wasn't Gatti-Ward. His exchange with Floyd was funny, but how about every other needlessly confrontational interview he would start with just about anyone? Roy Jones is the only good commentator HBO had in my time watching boxing, and Malignaggi is even quite a bit better, he's probably the best I've ever heard in any sport.

Floyd would have beat the living shit out of Merchant. What a fucking jack ass!!!

Re: Larry Merchant was a Great Commentator
His supposedly insightful comments fall short sometimes, despite that slow pondering voice he puts on, though it is good to have an old-man character there.
One of his good ones was something like "there are many questions to be answered and many answers to be questioned". That was quite neat but for commentators, I prefer Roy Jones, Foreman, malignaggi, anyone.

Re: Larry Merchant was a Great Commentator
Larry Merchant was and is fantastic. HBO hasn't been the same without him. Merchant is cantankerous, opinionated and wants to see a fight. I guess a bit like many of us. Much better than bug eyed Kellerman who I have little time for.

The Merchant and Foreman prattlings always made me happy to watch the fights. lol...

Merchant didn't give a flying fig newton if the fighter was a network guy, like Roy Jones and Floyd Mayweather Jr. He wanted to get the best out of them. Sadly, however, it was his network to blame for most of RJJ's run of bums than it was RJJ or his promoter. lol...

Re: Larry Merchant was a Great Commentator
I was a big fan of Larry. He was always entertaining IMO. Of course sometimes he would wax a little too philosophical, and by the time he left HBO (and a few years prior) you could tell he wasn't nearly as sharp as he used to be.
-
Re: Larry Merchant was a Great Commentator
Merchant was used way past his best but for nostalgic reasons he was kept on since he was sitting in the crowd when Ali beat Liston the second time they fought.
-
Re: Larry Merchant was a Great Commentator
Merchant was great until he wasn't anymore.
-
Larry is the worst in my opinion.
I like jim lampley for his emotion, Pauline for being Pauline and Barry Mcguigan for being right in every situation.
-
Re: Larry Merchant was a Great Commentator
He and George had some of the best bitter exchanges.

I think George may have felt similarly to Floyd.
Stupid old man thinks he's smarter than me but doesn't know shit about being in the ring.
-
They tolerated him because he was old..
-
Never liked Merchant, the guy always rubbed me the wrong way. I got to the point where I'd hit the mute button when Merchant did the post fight interviews.
Plenty of people liked him, I wasn't on of them. Too bad, so sad. Lol

I always loved Larry Merchant and Howard Cosell.

Re: Larry Merchant was a Great Commentator
Larry was knowledgeable, no doubt about it. But one of my main beefs with the guy was how he loved to hear himself talk. He would always insert this ridiculous pause before his grand pronouncements as if the entire boxing world was hanging by their nails waiting for His Majesty to speak. Later in his career, he was the same, but with a drunken, come-hither look on his smug face. He and Howard Cossell would've been a riot in front of the same camera.

Cosell was one of the best! Merchant was a pontificating ass, in my pontificating opinion of course.

Cosell gave drama to the sport.

I completely agree. He wasn't perfect, but at least he wasn't a "yes man." Did you guys see Kevin Harlan called the Bika-Stevenson fight epic last weekend? And most of the guys these days announcing boxing literally have no clue about boxing, they just have a deep voice.
-
a deep voice ha ha ha ha good. I agree. Larry Merchant was one of the best and he certainly was not a yes man

He just didn't know what the fuck he was talking about.

Re: Larry Merchant was a Great Commentator
Again.... Larry was full of himself.
One look at his smug face, one eyebrow raised, as he paused for effect..... was enough to make me bust a gut laughing.
It was like Silence mortals!! I am now going to grace you with the infinite wisdom of my words!!
Then he'd bring up some irrelevant, off-the-wall quote about Shakespeare or some shit like that and the other guys would be like.... Uhh... yeah. Anyway, as we were saying....

Larry ~Merchant~ :
"Before I paint with a brush and chisel with a chisel the details of just WHY Floyd would knock out Ortiz while Ortiz was apparently still apologizing, I'll quote from William Shakespeare in his epic description of the woods in A Midsummer Night's Dream:
"Never harm,
Nor spell nor charm,
Come our lovely lady nigh;
So, good night, with lullaby."
Victor Ortiz was knocked cold, practically fast asleep, Jim. So, good night Victor, with lullaby."
-
Re: Larry Merchant was a Great Commentator
Larry talked like he was constipated. Each word came out slowly and not all that smoothly.
-
Re: Larry Merchant was a Great Commentator
I'm trying to watch the Oscar vs Pernell fight and Merchant is just bitching like a teenage girl. He's insufferable!
He's saying dumb shit like "Why isn't Oscar just imposing himself of this old guy?"
Roy Jones replies "It's easier said than done, when you're fighting an old guy that won't let you impose yourself on him."
Larry: "He's supposed to be younger and stronger! Why doesn't his corner just tell him to beat him up?"
Roy Jones :"It's not that easy when you're fighting such an experienced fight who won't back down."
Heading into the 12 round "I don't know if either fighter DESERVES to win this fight if it goes on this way." MORON!!!
Merchant is a dumbass who thinks being contrary equals intelligence.
