Should Chavez Jr have been in the ring last night?
I know we all have issues with that spoiled little brat with the lazy training habits and the terrible diet to the point he is sometimes 15 pounds overweight. But, should he have been in the ring last night at that level of an opponent at that much of a weight step up?
Blame it on Chavez Jr. as well for his lack of discipline, not picking a weight class and staying in it due to his poor dietary habits and lack of true training.
But, with regard to safety, seeing that he was out of the ring for nearly a year after his last fight, and for the fact that it was at a catch-weight for his benefit, I think he chose the wrong time, wrong weight and wrong opponent to come back at.
Blame it on his handlers too for wanting things "their way". Shoots, if Jr. wanted a new weight division they would give it to him. A roving weight division. lolol...
But he should not have been in the ring last night at that level, at that weight and for being so inactive prior. It's more than just being arrogant, it was dangerous for him as a fighter health-wise.

Re: Should Chavez Jr have been in the ring last night?
If you're going to be undisciplined outside of the ring with what you eat, like James Toney and Roberto Duran were, you better have Toney or Duran talent to carry you at those higher weights. JCC Jr doesn't have that, the big part of his success is being a huge MW.

Re: Should Chavez Jr have been in the ring last night?
It was a fair match up on paper man, he's just not that good. Every chance he would have lost to some irrelevant journeyman if he campaigned at 175 without a catch, without trying to diss Fonfara to much he's very beatable.

He would have been beatable to a busier Chavez Jr. career wise. Fonfara just came off of a 12 round decision loss against a hard hitting Stevenson. He has some skills, not to get knocked out by Stevenson at least.
The testament to last night was to EVERY FIGHTER to stay busy if you want to be a quality fighter. Not every fighter has skills, some have heart and determination. I though Jr. had at least determination considering his fight vs. Martinez, but he lost that too.
These losses damage fighters in the long run...

Re: Should Chavez Jr have been in the ring last night?
Junior needed to be beaten in the ring to show him that he does not belong in the elite paydays that he has been getting. His potential opponents who are looking for an easy payday can move along and look some where else.

Re: Should Chavez Jr have been in the ring last night?
Yea for sure Fonfara is good, but the fact that he couldn't miss Jr last night and was so much stronger is pretty telling. Career wise Jr is what he is now, doesn't have a prayer of being a top guy. Literally anyone decent above 160 beats him.
-
Re: Should Chavez Jr have been in the ring last night?
Chavez was given a lesson, by a better fighter it's of no shock to most people on the forum,
Froch must be as sick as a pig he would have done very much the same thing, only Froch
would have stopped him in about 6 rounds.
Should Jr have been in the ring,! yes but not against Fonfara he was way to much for Jr he
dropped Stevenson, so we new he could punch stupid fight to take.

In hindsight yes. :)

Fonfara is dangerous when you step away from him.
Once you get in on him it's best to stay there.
You gotta be smart when stepping out against him...ask Stevenson and Jr.

Re: Should Chavez Jr have been in the ring last night?
Of course he should have.
How else was he going to get dumped on his ass and then quit on his stool?

As said, Chavez has not fought in about a year, and certainly not anyone at the level of at least Fonfara at that weight with Fonfara being in the ring with quality opponents.

Re: Should Chavez Jr have been in the ring last night?
2.5 million for taking a pounding does buy a helluva lot of cold cereal. Man has to eat, right?
One of the funniest things I've heard in a while was asking for a catchweight of 170 after losing a catchweight ;D;D. Chavez does not have the mental make up to take it serious.

Rewatching it it almost feels like it was his sink or swim moment, bit of a cash out roll the dice. He was going life and death with Brian Vera prior and clowned by Martinez. One of his better showings has seen Lee rebound and pass him by in a way. Chavez is stuck now, can't-won't make 160-168 and clearly more sluggish and aloof at 175.

He could make 160 or 168 if he showed some damn character.
Jr just doesn't like to live and work like a professional.
-
I wish he'd speak through an interpreter, I'd like to know if he is truly delusional or poor English is masking what he is trying to say or his understanding of the question. If he is truly delusional then he probably shouldn't be in there.
If he's OK mentally then he should be in there, and we should he watching.
If he wants to make a joke of himself, then I'll watch.

This "passing him by" is an illusion. Just one guy stayed in the wasteland that is 160. If Lee was in with Fonfara he's be stopped too. Neither Lee nor Jr is very good, they just have achievements based on what's around them.

One guy knows his limitations and knows he has no business at Lt. hvy. He also beat and more than hung with top contenders, showed the ability to adjust and again propel himself into a high profile fight..as champion. That's what I mean by passing him by. Irony is they both lost to Vera the first time out. Lee has walked through Hell to come back...Chavez has been down 1 time as a pro and effectively chose to stay there, on the stool.

Lee hasn't adjusted at all.
If Jr would dedicate himself he'd beat Lee again at MW.

Chavez Jr. has no respect for the sport of Boxing. Boxing put him in his place

He proved he's not a complete fool when he decided to stay on the stool.

He adjusted well to come back from the dead and dump Quillin on his arse giving back what he got? Chavez will not nor has he 'dedicated' himself and has been on borrowed time.

Re: Should Chavez Jr have been in the ring last night?
Chavez shouldve never ever been in the ring. He is a joke. no talent, or work ethic. His father knows this. I guess they wanted to cash in on the name.
He has beaten zero elite fighters.
I do like watching his fight style. Lead in with his head, block punches with his face, crouch down and go face first into his opponents nuts, then lean his head on the other guys head and throw punches.
what a fuckin joke
-
Re: Should Chavez Jr have been in the ring last night?
Chavez is really rubbish. What was with the slow motion lead with the head crap. What a freak. And the post fight interview? The kid is tripping.
-
Re: Should Chavez Jr have been in the ring last night?
Junior got spanked...he just doesn't have the pop to fight at 175
-
Re: Should Chavez Jr have been in the ring last night?
He shouldn't go in the ring with anybody his own size who is half decent as he'll just lose again. His entire career has been based on getting down to 160, at least occasionally with diuretics, then putting on a quarter of his bodyweight overnight and then bullying smaller handpicked fighters.
He can probably get down to 168 and be carefully brought back and maybe even get gifted a vacant belt if he's still selling tickets and the networks still want to show him, but the next time he comes up against anybody at world level at 168 or above he's going to get beat again.
The fight on Saturday wasn't as enjoyable as Maidana beating Broner but it was something I've been looking forward to for years. :)

A very good description of what has frankly always been an extremely pathetic career.

Re: Should Chavez Jr have been in the ring last night?
At least I feel spared in the future he is not an undisciplined champ who is on 24/7 eating a bowl of fruit loops in his underwear. We should be thankful that Fonfara closed the books on that phony's lack of class and limited abilities.
