155? Sign of the times.
I got the old guy.

Re: Cotto-Alvarez weight set at 155; likely date Nov. 7 or Nov. 21
Cotto has become a diva..BUT on this who cares! This is an event, a killer match up and cannot wait. I like Alvarez to win.

Re: Cotto-Alvarez weight set at 155; likely date Nov. 7 or Nov. 21
this is really a hard fight to pick for me. cotto has been looking better lately (although i understand that he has been very carefully matched up). canelo isnt a great fighter but is solid. i can definitely see cotto just outboxing canelo and beating him to the punch throughout the fight. he is an experienced veteran that may be too smart. on the other hand, canelo is a live opponent in there and will be pushing cotto to fight. he may wear out cotto as the fight goes on.
im picking cotto but i wouldnt be surprised if the outcome was different.

Re: Cotto-Alvarez weight set at 155; likely date Nov. 7 or Nov. 21
I hope Cotto wins but think he will lose. Cotto has to be at his very best and be disciplined not to go to war. Saul will chew him up if that happens. Cotto must choose when to box and when to attack. Fight of the year!

Yep, I see it the same.

Re: Cotto-Alvarez weight set at 155; likely date Nov. 7 or Nov. 21
The middleweight title should not be attached to this bullshit fight after bullshit fight and lets be real in that the watered down tin is not even needed for this one but I'll leave my cynicism there and agree that its a hell of fight. Oh Oh my cynicism returned and I'd wager neither honours the agreement to fight the Kazak and also that the winner will get a rematch with Floyd for his 50th. And knowing the Wbc they will have both 154/160 on the line even though in theory they dont allow a fighter to have both. I'll be cheering for Cotto because I cant turn my back on him but I think Alvarez may get a stoppage by white towel late.
-
Never been a fan of cotto and hope alvarez beats him, catchweights should be a no no in title fights.
-
Re: Cotto-Alvarez weight set at 155; likely date Nov. 7 or Nov. 21
The weight suits both guys. Can't wait. Picking Alvarez but I think it's an even match up.
-
Re: Cotto-Alvarez weight set at 155; likely date Nov. 7 or Nov. 21
I love both fighters and don't care who wins, but it is better for the sport if Canelo destroys Cotto in a big way as the guy further away from retirement.
I say Canelo stops him. I don't see Cotto avoiding a war and when it happens, Canelo will break him down.

Re: Cotto-Alvarez weight set at 155; likely date Nov. 7 or Nov. 21
I'm hoping Alvarez wins as there is more chance of him facing Golovkin.

Re: Cotto-Alvarez weight set at 155; likely date Nov. 7 or Nov. 21
Well it is kinda lame that the mw fight has a catch weight of 155 but it will be fun to watch i think the Ginger going to take it. I really think the guy is underrated and he had close wins over Lara and Trout both really top guys i think he can win the fight by a late stoppage should be fun.

Re: Cotto-Alvarez weight set at 155; likely date Nov. 7 or Nov. 21
This is a great match-up. I didn't think it would happen SO I haven't really though about it much but wow, this is just such a great match up - the combination-punching boxer-puncher vs the bawler come boxer-puncher come diva. No seriously this will have shades of Tyson vs Holyfield and Dela Hoys vs Vargas. A real violent tactical battle. I think that since Cotto is the ring general of the two, it's really all about him; how he decides to win or loose the fight. I kinda want Canelo to win as I will puke if Cotto wins. That's the tragedy of human nature but at least I'm honest. I've grown to dislike Cotto. Having said that, experience will greatly benefit him, as well as being the more versatile of the two. He just needs to keep it together.

Re: Cotto-Alvarez weight set at 155; likely date Nov. 7 or Nov. 21
I think (and hope) the old man still has enough in the tank to beat the young'un.
-
Re: Cotto-Alvarez weight set at 155; likely date Nov. 7 or Nov. 21
When I was talking about this fight the other week I said I would choose Alvarez but had no idea why, the person I was talking to chose Cotto but had no idea why.
I think it'd be a great fight and one that most people would find difficult to confidently pick a winner.
I'd like to see Alvarez purely because he is a young fighter and has a lot more mileage left in him which would make for exciting fights in the years to come

Re: Cotto-Alvarez weight set at 155; likely date Nov. 7 or Nov. 21
If this match had happened at LMW before Cotto fought Martinez, everybody without exception would've gone for Canelo. This fight is only 1lb above that limit.
so let's look at Cotto's "rebirth" . He beat (with hindsight) a shop worn Martinez with Knackered knees, and made a genuine MW shred to the lightest he'd been for years, and clearly looked drained. If Geale wants to take that fight , that's up to him, and none of this is Cotto's fault.
My point is that this form is not some major improvement , and taking all that into consideration , I can't see Canelo losing .

Re: Cotto-Alvarez weight set at 155; likely date Nov. 7 or Nov. 21
If he wants to fight at 155 maybe he should join the UFC's lightweight division.
What a fucking joke.
-
Re: Cotto-Alvarez weight set at 155; likely date Nov. 7 or Nov. 21
The weight suits both of them. Doesn't it?

Yeah, it does, and it's gonna be a decent fight. But the reason people get pissed off is because both these fighters are World Champions and if they want to fight catchweights, fine, but as title fights shouldn't have a catchweight , they shouldn't be defending their titles, therefore give them up.
-
Oh, and a fight 1lb away from a weight limit is a complete piss take!

Fucking hell, I've heard it all now!!!
A special belt? Could these governing bodies pamper these guys any more!
....And the new "one pound over the limit, expect to be called World Champ and avoid GGG" is............😡

Yes exactly, this is what pisses people off: the pampering that these big stars get, who get to make up their own weight classes and decide what they WANT to weigh in at.
You just don't see this kind of shit in any other mainstream sport, and it's because there's no real governing body. Boxing is and always has been the wild west. These commissions and supposed governing bodies don't give two shits because it's all about the $$$ to them.

Re: Cotto-Alvarez weight set at 155; likely date Nov. 7 or Nov. 21
Oh I know I'm the 160lb champ, but I'd rather defend my belt at 155lbs.
Oh! And I can't be bothered to fight 12 rounds, so how about we make it a 9 round fight.

Didn't Ray Leonard practically invent the 168 division by fighting the light heavyweight champion at that limit?
Considering he wasn't the champion, that's a bit worse isn't it?

You could say the lower weight suits Cotto as he is genuinely the smaller fighter and Canelo is known to blow up 175lb.

Fair comment. Although Alvarez hasn't been quick to move up to 160 yet so, who knows what his ideal weight would be?
-
Re: Cotto-Alvarez weight set at 155; likely date Nov. 7 or Nov. 21
Cotto wins most of the first six rounds, Alvarez gradually slows him down and Cotto spends the second half of the fight on the back foot. Alvarez stops him late or wins on points.
Although if it goes to points the best result for everybody concerned is a controversial decision and a rematch.
Looking forward to this one.

Yeah and he also demanded a championship match be 12 rounds instead of 15.
Spoiled fucks. Boxing has a history of bending over backwards for it's moneymakers.

That's why I always feel boxing could still have a home inside a circus tent because it's more of an event than a fixture. It's a money making scheme masquerading as a sport. So when the main ticket seller has more clout than the promoter and even the bit of plastic he's fighting for, then he gets to call some shots.

This belt lark is getting beyond a joke. Every fight now seems to have its own belt.

It's on
Cotto-Canelo: Nov 21st in Las Vegas.
..... and STILL Canelo doesn't venture outside the friendly confines of the Mex-Tex-Cal triangle.
-
Re: It's on
They should fight in Puerto Rico. Right?
-
Re: It's on
That would be nice. That way I could just drive over.
Great idea!
-
Re: It's on
Dream on! Puerto Rico...
Who aside from Juanma and Danny Garcia would fight there?!?
Hahahaha!
-
Re: It's on
Well... it was your idea. ;)
Seriously though... enough pulling your chain.
Obviously you know Las Vegas isn't the only place where boxing is held.
Canelito has never left his own backyard, while Cotto has fought in Vegas many times.
They could've made the fight in MSG.

Why question what's already done?

Re: Cotto-Alvarez weight set at 155; likely date Nov. 7 or Nov. 21
Why would they not have a huge fight in Vegas it is where most big fights happen and it is a neutral of place as any. I mean there not having it at there home towns there having it at the place were fighters are pretty much at home because so many big fights have gone down there.
