Keith One Time Thurman, Sergei Krusher Kovalev and DAVID FUCKING LEMIEUX will run boxing.
Those two kind of let the air out of the bag when they could not get it done in their primes. Don't let the ppv numbers fool you. In all honestly guys like Manny come along all the time and don't let the tin collecting fool you. I'm speaking from a purely pugilistic standpoint. Guys like Floyd come along once every 25 to 50 years.
Having said that I for one will be glad when both of these guys are gone. Boxing should forget about replacement and come back to earth. I think the entire ppv structure will gradually start to change and the network presence stronger and stronger. Str3aming will take over completely at some point.
I hope boxing heads in a better direction but before people were holding out for Manny or Floyd they were holding out for Oscar. There will always be stars that bring larger paydays, it's on fighters to demand the good fights that are available to them. This "my promoter...." excuse needs to die. I get why promoters, managers and fighters who care most about big checks like the strategy but we need guys who want fights. If guys take the good fights and win some of them the money will come and everyone is happy.
I'm still sticking with Jose Benavediz Jr. 23-0 Tall, long reach, well liked - by the powers that be.
He hasn't looked as great as I'd like and if he has gotten a gift or two decision (every Gr8 has) they get the benefit of the doubt.
I think he will grow physically and probably end up a WW.
Most important for me is the race factor (Mexico and Puerto Rico) support their fighters.
And Mexico is looking to erase the bad taste that Jcc Jr had left them.
This kid will draw big numbers- he needs a team that knows what fights to get him and when to do it. Every Gr8 fighter has won a fight or two based on timing of their foe.
Canelo as well- may have some years to shine. Demetrius Andrade has the potential to become a future star.
And Wilder has the potential to bring America back into the love of the HW division. As I've stated before a fight with Briggs would bring a lot of excitement and Wlad is approaching the downside of his career.
Boxing will do just fine without those two.
....I will be happy.
I don't think it matters if they retire. Manny is all but gone with his dodgy arm and Floyd has been looking worse in fights anyway. There is no magic in them anymore.
Next megafight:
Crawford vs Thurman
Crawford will eventually move up and chase that 147 paper.....
Yes, someone like Thurman will be great to see come to the forefront if he continues his ways. I don't think it will be a bad thing for boxing on whole when Manny and Pac exit, it is the nature of sports. Someday someone on here will be worrying on Floyd like @bill paxton does to Clay.
Floyd was lucky to get that contract and the dim wit executive who paid it needs sacking. Floyd is over paid for the entertainment out he provides. It means more money will be paid to more fighters for better fights.
Floyd had to build his name over time, along with fighting DLH. that made him the success he is.
Another Pac could come along. Not his style, but someone out of nowhere capturing the fans idea of what a exciting fighter should be like.
The Ledwaba fight introduced America to Pac & the Barrera fight solidified it. So our next exciting fighter might not be a product of amateur/Olympic boxing.
You're running on the assumption that boxing will still generate the same revenue when Floyd and Pac are gone, and that simply isn't the case.
And to say "Floyd is overpaid based on the entertainment he provides" is like saying "that brain surgeon is overpaid because of his mediocre juggling ability". It's just irrelevant, it's not Floyd's job to be exciting.
He gets paid to compete in a sporting event, to generate interest, to put asses in seats and to make people buy the PPV. He does all those things better than any boxer who has ever lived, which is why he gets paid more than any boxer who ever lived.
Luck has nothing to do with it. He is an undeniably amazing talent, he was ruled by Bob Arum who never though he had any real earning power in the sport, he believed in himself and bought himself out of his contract for large amount of money, started handling his own affairs and became the richest athlete in the world.
You can say he's an asshole or that he's not exciting, but he's got a great story. Worked his ass off, paid his dues, took chances, played his cards right and became the biggest thing in the history of the sport.
Floyd Mayweather is not exciting and a complete ass hole.
The problem is there hasn't been the guy that beat the guy. So it's going to be rough when they retire. I don't see any tremendous talent out there that can be a ppv star. Although we will see some great fights, there won't be that one dominant star for atleast another 5 years.
Question: How many fighters have superior skills, but choose to bang?
The one that comes to mind for me is Evander. Very good boxer, who at times chose to slug it out.
How many boxers would choose to bang-if they had Floyd's ring IQ & abilities?
I concur on the Ahole part.
Not sure I agree. But not sure how to counter.
Diddo Beanflicker!
Roy was entertaining and brought excitement... when he wanted to.
He had a lot more power than Floyd in both hands, but he also did a fair bit of dancing and coasting in his career. The guy was a human highlight reel but that's over his whole career. He had his share of stinkers.
His first fight with Bhop was one of the worst title fights ever.
But even when he was throwing leather, he was never "banging". He was always defensively-minded and used his insane reflexes to avoid punches. Arturo Gatti "banged". Roy Jones was hardly ever hit clean in the first 15 years of his career.
Roy became less exciting at 175 when his power wasn't as pronounced as it was at 160-168.
Floyd doesn't have a lot of power and he doesn't cut weight, which means he's always fighting guys with 10-25 functional pounds on him on fight night. Floyd had a lot of exciting performances in his career and did a lot of virtuoso highlight reel shit when he was younger. He was lighting guys up with both hands. He was having a conversation about the superbowl mid fight with Jim Lampley during his fight with Bruseles, before knocking him out with a body shot.
Now he's an old fan fighting guys much bigger and younger than him. His exciting days are over.
@ the time Floyd fought Corley- he only had one loss- and not a bad one to Zab Judah.
To this day I am at a lost for words why PBF vs Corley isn't mentioned much.
Floyd is always being dogged for fighting guys moving UP in weight, but when he moved UP in weight it was like an expectation.
1st fight @ 140 and he not only banged with Corley-- he dropped him several times.
Guess I'd have to look up his first at 147...don't remember.
Who, incidentally, the great Manny Stewart picked to beat Floyd hahaha.
Floyd's best years are well behind him, but I still say that at 140 and below he was an absolute thrill to watch more often than not. At 130 he was a VICIOUS boxer-puncher with power in both hands. 135-140 he was often very exciting and did a lot of Roy Jones-like shit.
Watch him predict the Super Bowl mid-fight and then go berserk and get the KO.

Great fight with Ndou, who was 31-1 with 30 KOs coming in. Great virtuoso offence on the outside and inside. Floyd stood straight in front of the puncher and threw bombs of his own.

Vs Gatti... I know Gatti wasn't exactly Ray Robinson in there but was a masterpiece in virtuoso offence.
