Who could have beaten Floyd?
Who in the current era would have had the best chance of beating Floyd?
-
Re: Who could have beaten Floyd?
I think Floyd would have had to move up to Middleweight to find the man who could really cause serious problems and those problems for me would only come against GGG. Even then I think I'd just favour Floyd. He is/was a master at negating opponents strengths and we have never seen Golovkin up against someone like that. I really wanted Floyd to take that huge chance for hiis very last fight but he chose the easy option in Berto unfortunately for us fans.

Re: Who could have beaten Floyd?
This current era? I'm not sure anybody. I mean, sure, there would probably be a random person or two who had the right style match up and could win but from welter down, I wouldn't favor anyone in the slightest.

I was hoping the op meant "modern era"

Please don't ;D

Nobody would've beat him now just like nobody beat him while he was around.
If he made a comeback in about a year or so, he'd be 40 and naturally there's gonna be someone come round who might've done him, but let's face facts, he ain't coming back and he ain't getting beat!

Re: Who could have beaten Floyd?
I think it all depends. Floyd rarely fought the best at their peak. Pacquiao v Floyd was a lot closer fight 6 years ago rather than when it took place. Mind you I still have Floyd beating the prime version of Pac.
I think Golovkin would have beaten him at 154, I also think guys like Lara and Andrade also give him a harder time then anyone else he fought. I also think Crawford could beat him.

Re: Who could have beaten Floyd?
Andrade and GGG would give him problems just because of their huge size advantage. Other than that I don't think anyone comes close at all.

Not a chance.

Era?? last 10 years, 15, now? Those margins at times can be a little narrow.

Re: Who could have beaten Floyd?
I would have liked to have seen Floyd in with Paul Williams before the accident. I would have gone for Floyd to win but I would have liked to see how he went about it. I certainly think he would have caused Floyd problems.

Re: Who could have beaten Floyd?
Devon Alexander of course, the 2013 version :S......

Re: Who could have beaten Floyd?
He's coming back like a lingering crusty sock. Bank on it...their is still hope ;D

agreed!!

Re: Who could have beaten Floyd?
I think any fighter COULD have beaten Floyd, if they caught him on the right night with the right punch in the right place. I also agree that Castillo won the first fight and was robbed of the decision. That being said, I don't think I make ANYONE a favorite over Floyd from 147 and down. I give prime versions of Mosely, Oscar, Sweet Pea Whitaker, and Julio Ceasar Chavez even money against him, and make prime Kostya and Cotto slight underdogs.
-
Re: Who could have beaten Floyd?
I watched Oscar-Mosley 1 again the other week. Was left thinking both of them (2000 version) would have beaten Floyd at welterweight.

Cant see Floyd falling for Mosleys way of forward attack to the extent of getting caught out in front.
Could see Oscar more in his prime and at the right weight mixing it up enough to outpoint him though.

Floyd was not a great welterweight but certainly a great p4p fighter going up the weights.

Re: Who could have beaten Floyd?
Whatever people may think about Mayweather as a person (not that they know what the real man is like at all), it seems pretty clear to me that Floyd was the best 'little' man of his generation. Multiple world titles in different weight classes, undefeated and the face of the sport for at least 5 years. He also fought EVERYBODY.
People are now talking about Golovkin, but Floyd isn't even a full fledged welterweight for fucks sake. He can be compared to the old timers in that he would make the weight even if there was same day weigh-ins .... Unlike modern day guys like Margarito or Williams who weigh in 24 hours early and are then really middleweights by fight time. Golovkin would just be too big.
Yeah, you may wonder what may have happened had he fought Manny five years ago when Pacquiaio was tearing through people left right and centre, but we will never know.
I wonder how Floyd would have done against people like Tommy Hearns and Ray Leonard, though they were also considerably naturally bigger than Mayweather, as may be evidenced by their later climb up the weights.
Hands of Stone was nearer Floyd's size and that's a fight I'd have loved to see. Aaron Pryor against Mayweather would have been a good one too.
The fact I'm even mentioning Mayweather in the same sentence as these gods shows how much I rate him as a boxer.

No one beats floyd.
No one has ever beat floyd.
Only one that beats floyd is himself.
If floyd fights another 6 times and gets old in the ring he beats himself.
Castillo came close against an injured floyd but look what happened in the rematch.
Oscar fight looked close but floyd won 8-4 or 7-5
Maidana did a great job in the first fight with his awkward style but floyd still won.
A prime Calzaghe against a prime floyd would be interesting (same imaginary weight class) but its still a win for the money man..he finds a way to win.
His skills are what boxing is all about and lets hope we have the pleasure of seeing him fight again..

Disagree with a few points in your post, but my main disagreement is Floyd vs Joe C. being interesting. If they were the same weight, prime vs prime,nFloyd dominates Joe (look how much he struggled with an ancient Hop suffering thyroid issues!). If we are talking prime vs prime not imaginary weight class, Joe is just too big for Floyd. Joe had a couple of solid performances vs Kessler and Lacy (maybe!), but I don't consider him in the class of Floyd, Hop, Manny, Roy...etc.

Re: Who could have beaten Floyd?
p4p fight between Roy Jones Jnr and Floyd. Who would win?

Disagree all you want.
Floyd and calzaghe have left the sport undefeated and comfortable.

It's a ridiculously hard question to answer because of what being bigger adds and takes away from a fighter. I'd have to go Roy though, he had the power to go with the speed and he would bring something Floyd hasn't faced before with his unorthodox style.

I agree the unorthodox boxing Roy would produce would make it difficult to Floyd to adjust and adapt. Floyd normally works out the difficult fighters by 4 rounds and takes over but giving 4 rounds away would be giving too much advantage.

That’s why I asked the question to be clarified. There are literally lots of people that could have beaten him over history in every class he fought in. But that also goes both ways. He beats a lot of ATG's from the past also.
As far as the 17 years he spent, one element that never gets brought up is Floyd's use of timing throughout his career outside the ring and the coddling at times he received in it. They die-hards never want to talk about that because they have no retort other then just seeing what they want to see. They usually just default to answers like "it would not have made any difference" which makes absolutely no sense at all. They call Cortez's total hack job in the Hatton fight an excuse LOL and bring up the turnbuckle like thats some kind of evidence to the contrary. They outright dismiss Chico's pending pillow biting hard time in the pen that was about to commence after their fight. It’s always something. They ignore the fact that he fought the same fighter for ten years and when he didn’t, he got assistance.
Mayweather brings out 2 extremes, neither of which is accurate. The truth rests in the middle for those who bother to objectively consider the question.

Great post from both but I hate him with a passion and if I ever saw him I would smash him up with a baseball bat. That is me being objective.

Re: Who could have beaten Floyd?
Every time i see this asked the same fighters pop up in my mind Hearns and Leonard. Hearns i think is by far the worst match up for mayweather his tools are not very effective in that fight. Leonard i feel would just be able to out point him with output and was fast enough to get out of the way.

A tall fighter with a good jab and work rate maybe someone like winky Wright

Yeah, I agree completely about Hearns. He is just all wrong for Mayweather with that freakish reach. Massively underrated boxing skills would probably be enough to win the fight for him, and that thunderbolt right hand would keep Floys respectful and might even push him into his shell.
Leonard is an interesting one. Both guys are sublime boxers but I always felt that Ray's game plan was to win the fight, whereas Floyd seems to focus on nullifying his opponent. A subtle difference, but one that I feel would dictate the way this fight would go.

Both would beat Floyd but what about Duran that beat Leonard or Benitez?
-
Re: Who could have beaten Floyd?
I love Roberto Duran, he is one of my all time favourite fighters and - in my view anyway - one of the top two finest lightweights who ever lived.
However, just as I think Hearns is all wrong for Mayweather, I think Floyd might be all wrong for Duran.
Hands of Stone was a fighter down to his bootlaces, and he always treated pure boxers with contempt. Later in his career, and fighting outside his natural weight, he got hugely frustrated by Leonard and Camacho.
There is no way Mayweather would be drawn into a war like Ray was in their first fight.
I suspect Floyd's rather negative nullifying tactics would annoy him so much he would either get very passive and be widely outpointed, or he would go ballistic a la Iron Mike and get disqualified!!

I think the way Leonard fights would also get him the nod on the score cards more so then other way around when they score rounds. Also i know Leonard can beat some one close to Mayweather in defense skills i have yet to see Mayweather fight anything close to Leonard.

Duran could punch him in the balls and do a Maidana/Castillio times 10. That would be fun to watch.
-
If Floyd falls behind in the early rounds against Hearns, he wouldn't have had the punching power to fight his way back like Leonard did.
I also doubt the judges would have been as generous to Floyd winning rounds later on with his potshotting
