10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
Me and about 8 mates flew up from Heathrow for this and what a fucking great night it was, the fact it started at 2am GMT meant the whole venue was suitable shitfaced by around midnight ;D plus Calzaghe put on an absolutely Flawless performance and won every second of every round.
One of the best nights I've had boxing wise

Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
It was brilliant on here too afterwards seeing all the know-it-all's getting humiliated. Never forget the "saddo radio show" where the arrogant cunts hosting it were laughing at the silly Brits that thought the cowardly shit cunt Calzaghe could win.
It turned out most of the arrogant big mouths hadn't even seen Calzaghe fight.

Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
Yeah, it's ironic that these days every kid and his dog does a boxing podcast.
The saddo one was hosted by a few American bods that were members/"writers" here, they had a phone-in and all that. And all I remember is they were patronising cunts. USA! USA! USA!
-
Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
Joes performance could have contributed to the downfall of the show
-
Joe gave him a boxing lesson.
Lacy was never ever the same.
-
Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
....and we never saw 'Northside' on the forum again!!
-
Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
Hahah I remember Northside and a few others, this was not long after I joined this place and really got into boxing. Not going to say I called it but I'd like to think I would today, the hype around Lacy was pretty nuts and there were a good few fights he struggled in before this, it wasn't what it was being billed as.
I don't think Calzaghe "ruined" him, as much as it was just a colossal mismatch to begin with. Hindsight is easy of course, but really Joe had the kind of form Lacy was never going to deal with. He barely even had what you could call a punchers chance, looking back.
-
Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
Time flies, that was a full house and the fight was on ITV. One siding beating. Lacy was fighting as if he had just landed and had jet lag.
-
Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
At that time I thought Lacy was over rated. But I didn't think Joe would give such a great performance. I thought Joe was a fighter refs favored. I think it was the Byron Mitchell fight that convinced me.
After left hook got left and right hooked by Calzaghe, I started paying attention
Bika was a good win also.
Manfreddo fight....Peter wouldn't have beaten Joe ..but it was still a pity pat combo stoppage.
Side note
I talked with Peter Manfredo in Canastota two months later. His body language spoke volumes about that stoppage. Funny guy, and was very convincing in stating it was the sorriest debacle he was ever apart of.
His win over Kessler was a masterpiece.
-
Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
Ironic that left hook lacy to a guy fighting without a left hand due to injury...
The ultimate use of the term exposed!
-
Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
Remember the hype Lacy had destroyed a over the hill Robin Reid, ! what he was going to do to Joe
all bark no bite Lacy turned out to be! he took over a thousand punches that did him some damage
also Calzaghe beat him with a damaged hand in that fight.;)
-
Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
Big H throwing up Northside, those were the days... he made the current divs on here look like geniuses.
-
Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
Calzaghe done okay for a guy that was advised never to box by a top surgeon, very bad hands often
he was fighting injured, yes most fighter fight injured but hand trouble must be difficult to over come
and extremely pain full.

Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
I remember telling anyone on here, that Lacy was a level and a bit better than Joe...:p

I wish I was around! I would reminded you all the time. :)

Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
The anti-Calzaghe/pro-Lacy furore was so rampant on here, by the time the first bell rung, I was half-expecting Calzaghe to get ironed in the 1st round.
Back then I didn't realise 90% of boxing fans are complete and utter muppets (not for picking the wrong man, but for not even knowing about the fighters they rubbish).

I was pretty shocking with some of my picks (Muhammad Abdullaev being prime Duran like; Dominick Guinn as the next Heavyweight sensation); it burst my bubble after being the only one on here to pick Williams over Tyson. ;)

Against a top ranked fighter at that. Calzaghe got my props. I remember laughing at certain parts of that fight. Rare does a top contender get so thoroughly dominated.

Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
Oh man what a ass kicking that was i thought they just brought out a drunk guy to fight him out of the crowd it was bad. I wish he would of fought Froch it would not have look that bad but froch getttin his ass kciked by Calzaghe while not landing a punch be funny dude.

Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
I was on the ESPN forum at that time, and I was one of the idiots that overrated Lacy and fell for the hype. Joe boxed circles around Lacy and definitely took his heart/confidence from him that night. Kessler was Joe's most impressive win, however. That was a very good fight and I was surprised and impressed to see Joe go to that next level that Kessler couldn't match.

Yes that was a fight fight with Kessler because he was having trouble for the first 5 rounds and adjusted and out boxed Mikkel with ease which is a sign of a quality fighter. Joe hurt Kessler with a body shot too.

I think there was a server change so can not be done. ask @Saddo
-
Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
Calzaghe was something because he could not even really punch his hands were so bad yet still beat everyone one. I have never seen a fighter that has his style and say what want about the divsion being weak so was Hopkins,Haglers and Mozons eras to all there best wins came from guys coming up.

it was 10 years ago so I can't fully remember the exact reason it happened but is was either... one, we changed servers and we lost about a year or 2 worth of posts as the backup wasn't complete or two, we changed the software of the forum and lost one or 2 years worth of posts in the conversion and it was too late to fix by the time it was realised.

I will have a look with the time machine when I get home

He was fighting like he was outclassed in every way. ;D

Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
That was a fun watch in all honesty. Once Lacy was compared to "top Holyfield" with best win being Robin Reid you knew they were just pumping smoke for someone else's fire. Top notch Joe just beat the crap out of him. On a side hope Lacy stays out. He's been brutalized recent and last fight date fell through thankfully. Guy had big brass..have to respect that.

Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
I have found this, it does not make me look good! But it does give you idea of my opinions pre fight, and I do not think I was alone in such opinions (SimonH = Me, for those who do not know):

Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
What an absolutely fantastic night that was!
I remember four of us went up, and the Friday night we was absolutely steaming, running around Manc drinking at anywhere that would let us in. Got to the MEN on the Saturday, cheap tickets up in the gods, and one of the lighting gantries was hanging at an angle and obstructing the view. Naturally kicked off that we weren't going to miss the fight because of that, and they moved us downstairs to the section of seats that was just outside the ringside ones (there were quite a few empty seats around us, so not sure if it was a sell out?). Spotted Gordon Ramsey and a couple of other celebs knocking around.
The fight itself was stunning, I'd bought into the Lacy hype as well, and thought it was going to be a really tough fight too. When the guys were chanting "easy easy" in the second or the third, I thought the pendulum was going to swing back...but it never did! Awesome night, probably my favorite throughout Joe's career. Ten years goes by too fast!

Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
Joe bashed him up good and proper but he was genuinely shit scared of him. I remember Frank Warren completely losing it with me/saddo's on a conference call for a fight I cant remember because someone here posted that Joe was pulling the bad hands routine to try and get out of the fight. He went spastic saying it was bollocks but Frank has since said himself it was legit and that Joe had to have him arm seriously twisted to go through with it.
Cracking performance. I remember Mad Dog saying at the time having never watched Calzaghe. It's like he's got six arms. I thought that was pretty apt.

Lacy definitely got an ass kicking! I felt sorry for the guy, taking a beating in front of the entire boxing community, but that's boxing. A hell of a way to find out you really aren't that good!;D

Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
Joe was close to pulling out because of the fragile hands and he did do that for Glenn Johnson. Think hid dad said to him get in there. I bet he was glad he was persuaded because it was one of his best wins.

Every time this fight is mentioned these days Frank proudly brings up that he had to convince Calzaghe to get in the ring.
