From someone who was born in 1992, what were the 80s like for those who lived during that decade?
it was ace
Yeah it was fantastic. The films were great and all I did was ride me BMX (Diamond Back), play football, runouts and break into building sites/new buildings that shot up all along the Thames. Those were the days.
I think in the UK there really was a crude divide. For us in the South East it was great; there was real hope amongst the working class; but outside the South East, Thatcher destroyed the spirit and soul of the rest of the Country and there was nothing to replace it, and seemingly little hope of improvement.
Yep we actually went out those days and parents didn't seem to worry where you were as long as you were home at meal times (looking back given how much my mum worries in general about me and our kid I can't believe this was the case ?!?)
These days I see my nephew not leaving the house - as he's connected on playstation and chatting from there , where's the fun in that ?!?
We'd all meet down the park for 3 hour football matches, build dens and stuff. Find porn mags too - even better. And as you say you were never off your BMX
What went wrong - technology ?
As much as I wouldn't be without my phone and internet etc it killed a lot of things.
Maybe that's just progress
The 1980's were fucking great! Just as the 1920's truly opened the 20th Century, the 1980's closed the chapter on the century in much the same manner. Brilliant new art, music, literature, movies the world was on the upswing so it seemed and then along came the 1990's where it was like people got tired of success and became self destructive.
The 2020's are going to be fucking amazing though
Great time meet my wife 84 married 87, bikes concerts, had 14 pit bulls great time.
Yep I liked the 80s.😁
I loved the eighties. From a music standpoint it was a little tough to compete with its predecessor but it was the end of the bell bottoms. So bell you couldn't see your shoes. Midway to later 80's was better than the first half. Boxing in the eighties was better overall I think compared to the 70’s. The move from 8-track to cassette was pretty much done. Polyester was big still but natural fibres were making it known and cool clothing shops were popping up. I hated Polyester and the Saturday Night Fever look that hung around through the early eighties. I was all Funk which was great in those days and kind of underground. Could not stand Disco. Gas was a buck a gallon. The weed was mediocre.
The 1980's were this

And Phoebe Cates' tits in Fast Times At Ridgemont High.....THAT is what the 1980's was
It was the worst decade for pop music. The 60's, 70's and 90's were MUCH better.
Movies were somewhat better in the 80s than in the 70s though.
Good decade for boxing, toward the end of the decade we had Mike Tyson. I used to go over to Detroit to watch Tommy Hearns when I lived in Windsor.
People were more sensible and conservative in the 80s. Drug use was down from the reckless 70s, at least in the mainstream. People were less promiscuous than in the 70s because of fear of AIDs and herpes.
I went to see Cyndi Lauper perform in Detroit in the winter of 86-87. And I love Annie Lennox's (Eurythmics) music from that decade. Whitney sang some nice songs.
But compared to the 60s, 70s and 90s, overall the 80s music wasn't very good. The songs I like by Michael Jackson were from the 70s (Ben, I'll Be There) and 90s (Earth Song).
60s: Beatles, Cream, Hendrix, Byrds, etc
70s: ELP, ELO, prime Queen, Wings, Badfinger, Uriah Heep, etc
90s: Oasis, Mariah Carey, The Verve, Cranberries, Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morissette
The 80's sucked in the rock area and the glam shit and hair bands got stupid. I liked the Clash though, the Police, especially Reggatta De Blanc, The Pretenders, The Cure, The Beat, Prince but at the after hours clubs and the like......

We had a couple of threads recently about eras and losing-finding interest in boxing. This is like that and I peaked in the 80's ;D Musically it was the debris of rusted tired punk finding a local renewed push, uproots of street or battle rap turned break out conscious hip hop, Aqua net and front men shrieking standing on a Camaro, tall towered hair, an accent with too much foundation and synthesizers by the trio. Occasionally you'd get the dust in the wind of a rock opera type or disco remnants but if anything the 80's was exceptionally diverse and runs deeeeeep. video killed the radio star ffs ;D. The decade redefined music and was absofufookinglutely bitchin ;D This may be one of those threads in need of run on endless lists ;D It was indeed a decade of 'firsts'. Most I can think a young guy experiencing happened right there thinking about it.
Thatchers weight and cruelty on a child already burdened by parents who weren't up to the job made me go to several primary schools and then eventually hit homelessness at the decades end with the inevitable split and pet dog killing. It was a rubbish decade as it fed into many years of constant self evaluation.
1980s
McDonald's introduced chicken mcnuggets & every other fast food joint followed suit.
Video games were played at the arcade; Pacman, Centipede, Donkey Kong to Space Invaders. Get the high score ..and a girl might give you her phone number.
Music was bought at a music store not online. Sam Goodys, Mainstream, Musicland. Album covers to marvel over. Easy way to meet a girl who is staring at a Michael Jackson album cover.
Pre 1980s Americans voted as democratic or Republican. Cable tv and talk radio began to echo each other...Americans had to become liberal or conservative.
Rocky movies and Star Wars were the cinematic big dogs.
Jack Janet & Chrissy aka 3's company was the big sitcom. And Saturday Night Live had Eddie Murphy taking them to the next level of funny: Buckwheat got shot, Velvet Jones' "I wanna be a ho'"
Michael Jackson's Off the wall album.. Caused radio to merge. Aka the term crossover. Black artists as a result were showcased on FM radio, not just AM. MTV did its part via television. Michael Jackson turned music videos into a phenomenon. Before him it was just people singing on stage. MJ changed music format on radio and how videos became a major role in music.
In rock music...spandex and long puffy hair. The guitarist was just as popular as the lead singer.
Twix candy bars was IT!!!!! Candy bar with the cookie crunch!!!
I lost my virginity in the '80s ..... and it was with a human
Fuck yeah Foreigner

I like the 70s but the 80's for me in your 20's and life was okay, drinking to much having a good time
up and down ever were on my bikes, not a care in the world married my wife had a beautiful daughter.
Had to grow up yep Thatcher destroying our industry, good and bad times.
We had Mullets, Madonna, maradona, Back to the future, Mike Tyson, Wham, Scarface, Rubix cube, Nightmare on elm street, Top Gun, Michael Jordon, ET, 4 TV channels, Knight Rider, He Man, Hulk Hogan v Andre the giant, Dallas, Dynasty, Cyndie Crawford, Cosby show, Jimmy saville .... It was messed up and messed us up.
Great music in the 80s, but 70s gets my vote for the best decade ever.
See, I'm thinking the 1920's was where it was at...between World Wars, pre-Prohibition (of ALL kinds not just alcohol), some of the greatest artists were still alive (some in their pomp like Picasso), Jazz was at it's peak with BRILLIANT musicians Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Bix Beiderbecke, Benny Goodman, Bessie Smith, Count Bassie, Coleman Hawkins, The Original Dixieland Jazz Band, The New Orleans Rhythm Kings. You had movies that were just starting to get big, Hollywood was up and coming, and The Great Man W.C. Fields was in his prime!
But then again you had to worry about things like Spanish Flu, Polio, no air conditioning, outhouses in much of the world as opposed to actual bathrooms, no washing machines, no microwaves, no tv, no computers, but some of that ain't all bad.
"Jazz was at it's peak..." -??
Did it plateau or peak and drop off after the 20's?
When, like rock and roll, and feminism, did jazz begin to get worse?
So jazz had it's peak in one man over one decade..?
Who was the man of rock?
Who was the man of feminism?
