Default Have any of you boxers run into this?

This is geared more towards the small town boxers.
Has anyone run into the following situation:
You're training your tail off getting ready for a fight or just trying to keep right around fighting fit in case you get called to fill a card. You're in pretty darn good shape for all intents and purposes. As you are out where the townies are able to see you as your doing road work, training, or even just getting the mail from the post office, you notice a lot of them are giving you dirty looks. You can't help but notice that the ones giving you the dirtiest looks are the ones who have tires around their middles. You further notice that these are also the townies who have spouses who are the opposite gender you are.

Man, my one neighbor's wife has been looking serious daggers at me everytime I'm out doing conditioning drills in front of my house . To make things even more interesting, her husband's been glaring at Trainer Monkey everytime he's out doing his training . Anyone else ever run into this? It's getting downright silly in this little town of ours.

I see several runners and cyclists out and about when I'm doing my roadwork. I never get any strange looks and on the flip-side of it sometimes I have complete strangers smile and wave at me. I don't look at roadwork as a grind, it's kind of relaxing because it's like when I'm driving my mind wanders, or I use the time to make plans. I guess it's just my own thinking and the way that I across that works wonders for me. With all the other runners and cyclists I guess I don't stick out as much. I like smiling and waving at any other runners that I see on the road myself.

I guess it might sound a little crazy to you but why don't you try to put it out of your mind and take on sense of humor about it. If someone gives you a dirty look you mimic them, maybe stick out your tongue. If they have a spare tire you can put your hands in front of your belly gesturing like you have a big belly. Of course you're still going to see some idiots that are passing by, but as long as you're not focusing on then it's not going to ruin your day. A sense of humor goes a long way too. So when some idiot gives you some S*** you can ignore them, and just make fun of them in your mind. Now if they go out of their way to cross you then they have another thing coming.

Actually, once I'm outside my actual neighborhood, that's pretty much how it is. It's all smiles and waves and if I'm lucky, I might run into the one cyclist in town (I'm the only runner in town right now) and she'll slow down and ride next to me while I run and chat with me....she's real cool.
Inside my actual neighborhood is where the silliness is. I think I'll just ignore them or, if the opportunity arises, poke a little fun at 'em.
Actually, the only dirty look I can recall getting outside my immediate neighborhood was from the big ol' snapping turtle that was lumbering across the road while I was running intervals the other day...needless to say, I didn't take that personally .

I have a few funny stories about this - most of the time nice smiles etc but there are always the freaks .....

1 - Middle aged woman outside sweeping her verandah sees me running and says to me "That looks like hard work - (then angrily) BUT THIS IS HARD WORK TOO!!!"

2 - Middle aged man drives past me and my old running group and shouts out "My chickens have got better legs than that!" Little did he know he would be stopped at the next traffic lights and one of my slightly feminist friends went and blasted the crap out of him while the rest of us nearly pissed ourselves laughing at him being caught out - especially since this particular friend managed to flash and abuse him at the same time - "How do you like them apples you asshole!!!"

3 - Freaky guy at the pool - "you must be cold" - another ancient one that taps me on the shoulder and interrupts me in the middle of a hard session to say "BTW you look fantastic in those bathers" - Seriously FOff can you not tell I'm busy!

4 - Motorists that hate cyclists - theres the usual insults - "get a car" and the freaky ones "show us your c**t b**ch!" when I'm wearing winter clothes and suprised he can tell I'm female and then from a different car "you cycle like a girl" ......yessss - plus the projectiles - bottles, rocks - sooo glad I wear a helmet. Also many a freak who yells suddenly as he drives past hoping I'll get scared and fall off.

5 - Random young females yelling sarcastic comments about my training clothes - as if I care what I look like when I sweat! the idea IS too exercise enough to look ugly!

Most of the time people are pretty good though - I guess some people are just bored and bitter.

How blatant are these daggers? I'd be asking them what they're looking at...

I always do my road work in my neighborhood. I usaully run 3.2 miles, (5k). The local YMCA has thier annual 5K run in my neighborhood every year, it goes past my house, so I just run that route and use my front door as the start/finish line. I always get mixed responses.

I'm 6'3", usually between 222-227 pounds, short hair, and I have "only the good..." tattood in wild west style letters on my left biceps. In a suit and tie, I look very much like the responsible 26 year old insurance agent I am. I will admit however that if you see me running down your block in Adidas pants with no shirt on, I look pretty much like a gang member and you'd expect the police to be following shortly behind. Needless to say I get a lot of scared and/or dissapproving looks from the many senior citizens in my neighborhood.

I'm in pretty good shape, so I get a lot of whistles from 16 year old girls and desparate housewives. Girls my age just typically kind of smile. If they're hot I might stop and talk to them.

I have a lot of neighbors that know I've been fighting for years, (though not boxing competitively anymore, just working out at my local MMA gym). They always yell, "when's you're next fight? I'll be there". It's kind of like Rocky, except for the fact that these people wouldn't walk down the block to watch G-Man v. prime Hearns, much less go see me fight.

I don't have any problems like these. Apparently, I have a somewhat deadpan often sour look on my face. I don't do it on purpose, It's just how I look. Anyway, most people don't even make comments to me. My all time favorite though was when I walked into a bar to have a beer and a guy sitting at the bar looked at me and said "You look like you want to kill someone." My ex-wife also complained about it. She nicknamed it "Terminal Cop Face." Deep down I'm really a nice guy.

lol, "Terminal Cop Face." I hope you don't mind if I use that some time.

Sometimes I get called out on how serious or angry I look at a moment, while in actually I'm not angry at all. I then just give then a nice smile or a grin and that pretty much solves it.

And Canvasback, next time you're at a bar and some guy says to you, "You look like you want to kill someone." You just need to reply with a little smile, "I'm just here to kill a few beers..."

Yeah! It comes in real handy right around Christmas time. We decide we've had enough of the mall crowd so Monkey puts on this scowl that blacker than Hades, hunches his shoulders and starts walking....fast. People are practically diving out of his way.

I just hook a finger through his back belt loop and tag along.
