How did people develop the idea that Protein shakes were bad for your kidneys? After all they are just protein, some mixed with carbohydrates, etc. Check the back of the tub to see the amino acid profile as well to see what you are getting.

The idea comes from the whole crazy high protein, very low carb diets. If your body doesnt have carbs and fat to burn it will start to burn protein as energy, which is bad for your kidneys.

Protein shakes are a great way to add protein and other nutrients to your diet.

I include any or all of these (depending when im drinking it) in mine:
Protein powder (whey and or cassein)
    water
    Milk
    Yogurt
    Eggs
    Berries (frozen or fresh)
    juice
    fiber supplements
    peanut butter
    bananas

You need to realize that some have added carbs and fats and are high calories. And some are low carb, fats and calories. It depends on your goals, which you should choose.

Meat protein and whey protein are basically the same thing. The only difference is the amino acid profile and where it comes from (whey is from milk). Too much whey would be the same as too much meat protein.

No, because your not considering the gristle content, which will take a park
Atkins has caused Kidney shutdowns, hell the man himself died partially from one

That still doesnt change the fact that whey and meat proteins are the same thing. You can still get kidney problems from too much whey.

Too much protein makes your kidneys work much harder than they should, regardless of what kind of protein.

Besides the problems he had were caused more by the lack of carbs for the body to burn as fuel than it was by fat. As i said earlier, when the body burns protein as its primary source of fuel is when the problems arise.

Excess protein can cause kidney damage because the acid group of the amino acid is converted into ammonia and then to urea which then passes through the kidneys. Too much urea passing through kidneys can cause kidney problems.

By the way, it's the amino group of the amino acid that is converted to glucose (if necessary) so actually burning excess protein for energy is not the reason for potential kidney damage...but yeah i can see what your saying - too much protein (regardless of whether or not it's whey) can cause kidney damage

    Regardless,
By abstaining from Protein shakes in modern sports you're putting yourself at an instant disadvantage.
