    Default Looking for some opinions?

Hi, im a 23 year old girl. I didnt really get into sports until 3 years ago when I took up taekwondo. I was extremly unfit and more than a bit chubby. I have since gained my 1st dan black belt, increased my fitness by huge amounts and lost one and a half stone. I love taekwondo classes however my body has now become used to the training even though it is a tough workout twice a week.

I still weigh around 70kg and want to lose some more weight, maybe abotu 5kg. I do love my food and do not want to go on any very strict diets. Anyway, I have been considering joining a boxing club to help lose the weight and also because i enjoy sparring and training and feel that now I have the experience of taekwondo behind me I may enjoy it. I was just hoping if you guys have any opinions on wether you think boxing woul dhelp lose the weight or wether I need to go on a strict diet to lose the last 5kgs? I don't know much about women in boxing, wether or not their are many women involved in boxing, and maybe it would increase my weight rather than reduce it if it includes lots of weight lifting. I have been cutting down and going jogging with my dog once ro twice per week as well as taekwondo but the scales dont seem to be movign at all. Any help would be much appreciated.

if you don't promote people they eventually go away. The mcdojo's know that. A harsh reality of the belt system. But at this point, the benefit of the doubt goes to her.

But jellybean, I truly admire some of those high flying kicks that tkd people do. Requires huge amounts of skill and practice. Can you post a vid of yourself doing them? Would love to see some!

It is not a mcdojo at all I have worked extremly hard to get where I am today, I guess different clubs have different rules. Thanks for all the advice. I didnt come here to get slagged off for something I have worked so hard for!

i just said you get the benefit of the doubt. It's a great accomplishment, and one you should be proud of. nobody is slaggin you, it's just that your results are atypical.

my previous wording may have come across the wrong way.

I'm not slagging you off ..... but I have a black tag in TKD (the one below 1st Dan) and it's taken me 7 years of going twice a week every week to get this far. I'm reasonably athletic and a former good amateur boxer, so I dont think its down to me being particularly bad.

Getting 1st Dan in 3 years either means you are an exceptional student, or they weren't too stringent with the standards .... that's all.

Incidentally, it is very likely that a good boxing gym would help you lose weight - don't forget that boxers have to make weigth so lots of the training is actually about making weight as well as the boxing. Hitting a heavy bag, skipping and all the aerobic work boxers do is better at helping people lose weight than the tkd training I did, which has a different focus.

You will definitely start to get stronger in the upper body, but I wouldn't join one specifically for losing weight, if you have the self desire to do so as the exercises aren't revolutionary. Basically you need a calorie deficit (500 deficit a day will lose you a pound a week), so if you like your food too much increase your training load. An hour's boxing session is equivalent of a 9km run in energy expenditure terms, which is around 600-700 calories. So find yourself a calorie counter online, take off 500 calories and aim for that while staying active.

I don't know much about the eastern martial arts, but I do know that this is much more aligned with traditional time lines. That's a long time. I've boxed for a while now and wanted to supplement it with some judo, but considering the time and cost, chose to simply become a better boxer. It would be nice to know how long it took Munky to get his black belt in judo. Munk?

Hi Jellybean 1986 welcome to Saddo's.
Darn i was travelling the world for a year when you got born, good year 86!

If you think that is X slagging someone off wait till you get into the everything goes section of this forum ; fun in there ,good for the ego. make you better all round mentally, spiritually; which helps you keep your cool when practicing no fighting .

    On the black belt note; i dont agree with it, but a certain dojo..ok its Zen do kai ; out here in Australia has a Jet black;
can reach it by going there full time for a year I belive.

Shoot, thought I'd replied to this earlier.

I would highly reccommend boxing as a method of slimming, toning and defining.
Not strictly because of the exercise, but because of the discipline, motivation and work ethic it inspires in you.

Well I guess everyone has their own opinions about how long one should train before belts etc. I have trained for three years, four times a week until lately, now its only twice per week which is why im looking for extra training classes. I train with some excellent sports people, some of whom hold eauropean and commonwealth titles so I expect this has helped push me to work harder. I know myself how much I have improved as I can now have a proper match with them (although I still usually lose) and they have to work hard to win whereas a year or two ago i either got my crap knocked in or they had to spar slow lol! Still have a long way to go but at least im improving. When we get higher up the ranks our instructor no longer grades us but masters from the organisation we are with. For my black belt, we actually had a korean master take the grade and then he trained with us after, which was an amazing experience. Im awating my kukkiwon, cert of registration of black belt arriving from korea very soon. Hopefully this will help convince u all its not a mcdojo. Anyway lol, thanks for all the advice to those who answered, think im gonna have a look round a few boxing clubs to see what i think. Meanwhile, have found another tkd club that will let me train with them for extra fitness classes!

So she went 4x a week, X went 2x a week, X got his in 7 years, and she got hers (and then some) in 3. Basic algebra says that 2 more times per week should translate to 3.5 years to the same level. But somehow she cut out 6 months and got one degree higher.

X, according to my math, you must suck.
