    Default Mma vs box

Okay this thread isn´t really about mmma vs box, but close tho!
Me and my friend are having this debate : Who would punch harder in a street fight, a good MMA fighter our a good boxer. The logic i used is that boxers, focus much more on punching alone than mma fighters, and practice punching a lot more than mma fighters, now the logic he used is that a boxer will get used to some 12oz gloves, and get used to punching with those gloves, he said that surely the boxer would punch harder than the mma fighter would they to fight both with 12oz gloves. BUT he said that in a streetfight, the mma fighter could punch much harder and faster, he said that punching with a 12oz glove just isn´t the same as punching without gloves.

I'd say the boxer would punch harder, for the same reasons you gave.

one thing that I can't stand about MMA is that they hit a man when he is down...Can't get over the feeling that this kind of move is pussy shit....

I tried to like this sport, I really have but every time I see that, it pisses me off. Let the man get up and see if you can knock him out...

a boxer is the harder puncher. simply cause thats the only thing they practice. the proper stance to throw a punch.

re punching an opponent when down, on a street fight there are no rules. you cant expect your opponent to not tag you while youre down. its a survival thing and honor is thrown out of the window. heck a sucker punch is an effective weapon in street fights.

mma is pretty close to a street fight than boxing so naturally punches while the opponent is down is allowed.

A boxer, in the same way a football player would probably kick you harder in the nuts than an MMA player.

true, however rough mma seems its really not that bad or brutal as the ground is where a bjj practisioner would prefer his fight to be so he wouldnt mind a good striker trying to hit him while hes down thats part of the sport, but its nothing like a street fight tbh there are rules to be bent in mma as there is in boxing, as a martial artist i dont like to admit but even a well rounded cage fighter can easily lose to an untrained person in a street fight i used to work the doors and id see it all the time doormen who thought they where invincible because they went to a poor cage fighting lesson once a week (often just to declare themselves cage fighters to people to try and intimidate people rather than actually obtain any real fighting skill or for a want to actually compete), i learned a good lesson in a fight i had with a traveller in a petrol station as he was trying to bite my ear off and gouge my eyes out while i was expecting a sportman-like roll i got a real street fight where i even found myself having to try and break the lads fingers and grab his windpipe to get the upper hand which just isnt my style like i said im a martial artist, true i wasnt willing to take it as far as him and try to gouge his eye andor crush his windpipe to probably end up in prison and to be honest it wasnt somthing that i would have thought to do myself in a fight if he hadnt done it first but it goes to show how my bjj training was useless in that case, no matter how much you think cage fighting will make you a good street fighter its just not true because there are still rules in cage fighting and in the street there isnt. and youll always come across some nutter whos willing to go to prison over somthing as trivial as looking at them funny, thats why i think the best place to be in any street fight is on your feet to avoid having soft spots like this attacked and aswell if a blade comes into it then there is time to think about turning and running not to mention as soon as a fight goes to the ground nowadays guaranteed some spineless onlooker will then proceed to join in and start stomping you when he feels its safe to.

....Yeah I'm also against that just because it's not very sporting.

Boxers will punch better because punching and blocking punches are all boxers focus on. MMA fighters also tend to push their punches or just throw wild winging punches....that's not ideal for any kind of fighting.

I re-opened this debate (sort of) with a friend last night while watching UFC something or other.

Not even sure how recent the card was, but it was a good one.

The conversation started while watching Chuck Liddell batter a guy, with neither prepared to go to ground and both stood and fought the whole fight.

It got me thinking, someone like Liddell, there can't be many boxers that would knock him out? The guy is solid! Not sure on his weight though, but I'm sure he could avoid heavyweight.

He can take a punch and can land massive bombs, he would trouble many boxers.

Clearly an old Chuck fight bud, cos he now has NO chin as proven by Rich Franklin in his last fight

Back in the day he was one of the toughest SOB's in the game, unfortunately now a shot fighter

Must have been old then, his record was 23-5 going into the fight, so maybe you can guage it by that.

The whole card was pretty good, it was on Five USA+1 at about 1am this morning!

It also had a guy who managed to pull off a switch to arm bar in one of the slickest and fastest ways I've ever seen.

A fight between him and Herbie Hide would be good fun

Yu are dreamin in technicolor if you think a mma fighter would come close to a world ranked boxer in terms of punching power.

I havent seen a mma fighter that would last very long in a true boxing match against a ranked opponent

Chuck didn't have the SKILL to be a boxer...he could bang for an MMA fighter but in boxing it's hit and don't get hit and Rampage showed just how easy it is to counter Chuck. Look up their second fight and you'll see for yourself, low hands, chin up high in the air, doesn't use angles or a jab to work in he just leaps in with a power punch and it's goodnight sweetheart
