Chavez Jr. vs. Rubio Saturday night fight thread

As well as Donaire vs. Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., 2 title fights for us fans, it should be worth a look. The Card starts @ 10:00 PM ET tonight.

Feb. 4
At San Antonio (HBO): Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Marco Antonio Rubio, 12 rouds, for Chavez's WBC middleweight title; Nonito Donaire vs. Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., 12 rounds, for vacant WBO junior featherweight title; Vanes Martirosyan vs. Troy Lawry, 10 rounds, junior middleweights.

Rubio should be a solid test for Julio Jr, Rubio is a big, durable, experienced middleweight, who's got decent power and fought better competition. Chavez Jr. figures to outwork Rubio and get a decision, but it will be interesting to see how the fight plays out.
As for Donaire, I don't see Vazquez Jr. being much of a threat, Nonito will put his lights out within 6 rounds.

I'll be impressed if Chavez Jr. and Donaire knock their opponents out. The most likely results probably are Chavez Jr. winning a disputed decision and Donaire winning decisively on the cards.

Rubio is different than Chavez Jr.'s previous opponents because he can punch, but he's not a better boxer. The average KO % according to boxrec.com of Chavez Jr.'s last 10 opponents is a whopping 35%. Rubio has a 78% KO %.

Chavez Jr. hasn't lost a close decision in his career and he's had his share of draw, mixed decisions and debatable results. Consequently, I hesitate to pick Rubio in the upset because the cynic in me has trouble seeing Rubio able to win on the cards against Chavez Jr. in a Top Rank promotion. At a minimum, the outcome I can eliminate is Rubio on the cards. Chavez Jr. has never been down before as far as I know, but he's also never faced a puncher like Rubio. If I had two bets, I would place one on Rubio by KO and one on Chavez Jr. on the cards. Either way, I bet it will be an entertaining fight.

For Donaire, I don't see Vasquez as being a true test in terms of his boxing ability, but it'll be interesting to see how Donaire handles fighting at junior featherweight. I don't believe he'll have a problem with the weight and see Donaire ending this in the middle rounds.

I've been hoping someone flattened Julio Jr. for years, Rubio might just be that man.

Donaire always seems bigger than his opponents, I imagine he'll look bigger than Vazquez Jr., even though he's the one moving up to Jr. Featherweight. (122 lbs)

Now that he is with Garcia, that is strike two. I can't see Vasquez beating Donaire after his performance against Arce. I'll say Donaire dominates him.

I think the Wild Card fighters are as protected as any but they made a mistake with Khan-Peterson one part of me thinks they might be repeating the mistake against Rubio. This is a hard fight to predict. I can see Jr. looking very good, or taking a beat down in later rounds. I am going to go with my first instinct, Jr. has improved enough to beat Rubio and too much has been made about the Lemieux fight because Lemieux was over rated.

Although not the main point of your post, how are wildcard fighters protected? Chavez Jr. is protected. Providnikov, Quillin, Khan, Pacquiao - how are they protected?

Donaire has some good wins on his record and some promotional issues marred his development for a bit. Let's see where he goes from here assuming he beats Vasquez Jr. It'll be a shame if he fights Arce next. If he takes on Nishioka, Rigondeaux, Gamboa, or John (I know long shot), he'll be doing exactly what he should be doing to earn respect.

Since losing to Pavlik, Rubio has won 11 straight fights, 10 by KO, I figure Jr. is going to have his hands full Saturday night at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, a good old Mexican shoot out.

Rubio is probably the best fighter, with the most power, Julio Jr. has faced so far. Chances are Roach will have Jr. ready, but i'm just hoping Rubio fucks up their preparation on fight night.

I never cared much for Chavez Sr either.. If Rubio is able to hurt Jr, we might see a good fight, if not Jr will likely win a controversial decision.

Julio Ceaser Chavez Snr was one of the greatest fighters I have ever seen. I love his style of boxing it was beautiful and brutal. You take that back.
