    Default HBO dump Golden Boy

HBO, the highest-rated boxing network, made the extraordinary decision Monday not to buy fights from Golden Boy Promotions, one of the sport's two biggest promoters, for the foreseeable future.
That will mean the exodus from the network of a number of Golden Boy stars, including lightweight champion Adrien Broner and light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins.
Broner, who is one of the rising stars in the sport, has done extraordinary ratings for HBO for a young fighter and has referred to himself in social media as "Mr. HBO Boxing." But at least until the issues between HBO Sports and Golden Boy are worked out, that will not occur.
Broner's contract with Golden Boy and adviser Al Haymon reportedly expires in April. Rap star turned boxing promoter Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson has reportedly made an offer to Broner to join his company, SMS Promotions, when his Golden Boy deal is done.
HBO Sports president Ken Hershman, who formerly ran the boxing program at rival Showtime, made the decision to part ways with Golden Boy after running into issues with company executives.

    Y! SPORTS

Interesting about Broner too. Can't see him signing for 50 Cent. If he does his new promoter will immediately call out Andre Ward and Floyd mayweather and the next time we'll see Broner fight is sixteen months from now on FNF.

Yikes, looks like Showtime might take over the boxing world.

Not a big surprise really. Now the cold war will turn into a deep freeze.

Yup. Not a big surprise. But, wow, this is literally going to be deep freeze. I don't see any thawing in the relationships for a long time. This is big.

HBO was worried that it would invest a ton of money in Broner, only to have him jump ship later on in his career, like Mayweather. Fair enough.

I wonder how this affects the mid-market promoters, Dibella, Shaw and the like. I bet it makes their fighters more in demand because no matter how deep the alleged stables are, at some they'll run out.

Would it have been more prudent to just stop televising GB fights, as opposed to announcing the end of the relationship?

It's a big surprise to me but I was wondering why Kellerman seemed to be buttering up Arum when they were comparing Bradley vs Provodnikov to the old time fights.
Personally, I don't want their fight to interfere with or limit the quality of the fights we see. This feuding boxing promoter bull has to stop.

The other big question here is whether Showtime, which is a smaller network than HBO in terms of $ to devote to boxing, can afford Canelo, Broner and Mayweather? Not to mention, Garcia and Hopkins.

Is HBO trying to get out of the boxing business? What a shame.

Assuming something is in the works with other promoters and its not another step in them walking away from the biz, I'm not all that shook up. Sounds like a power move and sure they are trying to piece it back together. More oppurtunity and different rosters at work for lesser known fighters. Stroked guys like Canelo, Hopkins, Broner will land on their feet. Showtime is blowing up in a great way.

Does anyone have a listing of GBP fighters? Wonder if they will see an exodus and run of broken contract suits?

Yeah nothing has really changed and it still remains a battle of attrition. They just changed jerseys or rather lawyers lol. I cant get showtime on the tube so I'm pissed off for purely selfish reasons but at least streams are becoming more and more available. I thought something was up when Showtime pretty much made Broner the guest of honour at the Abril fight. This has probably been in the works for quite some time.

Now would be a perfect time for the middle of the road promoters to approach the networks

I'm not really sure that this affects what fights are made if you consider that GB an TR weren't working together anyway.
