Re: the old 1 2 while advancing retreating
There's a time and place, and generally you should maintain the same distance between your feet. Here are some really good drills that Grey posted:
Coordination of Hands and Feet
Forward and Backward shuffle with Jab, Straight Right; From the fundamental position shuffle forward slowly jabbing continuously with the left hand. The arm and the feet move independently and balance is not disturbed. Shuffle backwards again jabbing continuously without disturbing balance. Now shuffle forward driving the right arm out continuously to full extension. Shuffle backwards again with the right. Finally shuffle forward driving first the left then the right to full extension. The arms are still working independently of the feet and balance is not disturbed.
Quick Advance and Retreat with Jab and Straight Right; Basic stance, begin moving forward with a series of quick advances. As the body moves forward drive the left arm forcefully to complete extension, the arm in unison with the left foot. As the left foot touches the floor the left arm is completely extended. Now retreat, pushing off with the left foot and jabbing with the left arm. Retreat again this time jabbing then pushing off. Now advance one time jabbing as you do so, then one retreat and jab. Do this over and over again, one advance and one retreat jabbing each time and being sure to fully extend the arm each time. Hands and feet working together.
Now move forward in series of quick advances driving the right arm to complete extension each time the right foot is moved, left held high, right hand and foot working together. Now backward in series of retreats driving the right out each time the right foot moves. Actually the timing here is a bit tricky, as its like you are starting the right as the right foot moves but don't complete it, really turn your weight, until the right foot lands. The instant the it touches down your are shifting your weight to the left leg as it returns to position... Try it and you'll find what I'm getting at long before I can word it properly). Now move forward in series of quick advances jabbing with the left foot, driving the right with the right foot; now going backward, now one then the other, forward and backward, hands and feet working together.
Circling Left with Jab and Right; basic stance and circle left. As the left foot is moved, jab, hand and foot in unison. Now circle left and as the right foot is moved fire a straight right. Again, this time with both punches, jab and straight right, hands and feet in unison.
Circling Right with Jab and Right; basic stance and circle right. As the left foot moves jab, continue, left hand and foot working together. Now as the right foot is moved throw a straight right. Last, as the left foot is moved jab. As the right foot is moved pivot the body to the right and drive the right arm to complete extension.
Good Balance During a Combination; To start make sure your feet are under your shoulders, left on the floor at an angle to your rival, right pointed straight forward, heel up. When you jab do not shift your weight at all- push off with your right foot and bring it forward with you so that when the jab lands you are in the same stance as when you started. make sure to thrust your jab-arm into full extension; otherwise your rang will be fouled up.
Shift weight to left foot throw a right hand and punch through, keeping chin nailed to your collar bone; punching through means all weight over left leg shoulders turned so that any opponent would see only the back of your right shoulder.
You are thus perfectly in position to hook the body, so slide your right foot @1" directly right and shift your weight back - this is a quick snapping shift to whip your left fist, thumb up to the body Very vital that you don't straighten then hook, ever. Now put all weight on straight right leg, toe at 90 to target pivot hard on left toe, throw the top hook and you should end up weight on right foot right glove alongside your jaw, left glove touching right shoulder. Slide left foot several inches to the left and slightly forward, moving your weight over to that foot will give you the position and leverage for the right hook. To hit the body slide your foo further left than if targeting the head Start slow and experiment with your footing, then let your weight fuel your punches
