It's good fun exercise. The thing you gotta look out for is that you're not overtraining. With swimming the overhand motion with freestyle can't be good for our shoulders especially when it takes a beating everytime you throw a punch and more so when you land 1. Any repetive motion can wear down a joint over time. I don't see any problems with a boxer doing the the breaststroke.

As with any physical activity or sports that you may do on the side, make sure that it doesn't take away from your main endeavor.

I swim and I do not find any increased pain from it at all. Actually I'd think being a little more flexible would make you hurt less since you've got more elasticity in your muscles to absorb the shock.

Would that be right Scrap or am I blowing smoke out my ass?

I also don't have any shoulder problems or soreness or tiredness unless I swim very often or very long. Used as a cross training tool with all different strokes 3 or 4 times a week, having eased into it gradually I can see any issues arising at all.

When I don't get to the pool it's more for logistical reasons sine I have to travel to get there and don't have time to get there and back in my lunch break. It's not as easy to fit into a busy lifestyle - that'd be the only real drawback i can think of.

Yeah swimming is just a good excercise period....it helps develope everything.....Cardio,,,,muscle training,,,toning,,,,you name it it does it....plus i gotta say it may be one of the most enjoyable exercises...you don't even have to kill your self while doing it...it is pretty much low impact....

Yes swimming can help with just about any sport....I have heard of baseball players practicing pitching form and batting form under water,,,,runners using water to increase their endurance with the resistance....

    good stuff

I find it great for a number of reasons.
If ur legs are tired from roadwork it's less harsh on the calves and ankles.
Its very good when used in coordination with weight training.
it's a full body excercise when done right!

However for boxing it has a couple of downfalls.

As chris said it can be rough on the shoulders and pecs.
Also, although it is a great cardio vasculr excercise i don't find it a great way to maintain or shed excess weight as the water cools the body and prevents excessive persperation.
It is a difficult excercise to perfect and in my opinion it's helpfullness is extremely limited by the quality of one's form and technique.

Eddie Futch didn't think so. He would not allow his fighters to swim, bicycle, etc...Boxing is good training for boxing.
