Was just reading a thread where a poor newbie got ganged up on for making fun of a few fighters. Kind of felt sorry for him, and I hope he keeps coming back. It’s our nature to disagree about boxers and boxing in general, and you shouldn’t get pummeled for it.
What prompted me to start this thread was the argument over Nikolay Valuev. I saw some compelling arguments on both sides, and I just couldn’t resist. But I think we should all be able to state our opinions freely and without fear of ridicule or abuse (as long as we don’t offend anyone). So I thought this would be a fun thread. Let me kick it off by stating my case against Valuev:
Nikolay may very well be able to beat 95 or 99% of the heavyweights out there today. But I don’t like watching him, and I’ll root against him at every fight. Why? Well, he may be a nice guy and all that, but there’s a couple of reasons why he’s so dominant and none have to do with his ability:
1. He’s HUGE.
C’mon, if I stood 7 feet tall and outweighed all my opponents by over 100 pounds, I’d be pretty dominant, too. Why is this guy even a heavyweight? There should be another division for him. “Heavyweight” should not be an open-ended division. As I’ve said before, how competitive would a Pacquiao be against a Pavlik?
2. The HW division is not that good.
Some would like to argue that it is. But face it, it’s just wishful thinking. Most of us long for the days when the Alis, Tysons, and Lewises ruled the division. But right now, that’s just not the case. So being able to beat 99% of a mediocre division? Kind of like being the best player on a last place team.
Finally:
Although this next statement will no doubt bother die-hard Valuev fans, I gotta say it: The man has limited skills. I’ve seen some of his fights. He should be able to do so much more with that size. In a way, I’m glad he’s not that good. If he was halfway decent, he would have cleaned up the HW division by now… including Wlad. And then it’d be boring, watching the next sacrificial lamb thrown in against someone twice his size.
So…. what fighter do you root against, and why?
