    Default Prisons in the US

I watched a very sad documentary where there are 80,000 prisoners in the USA locked up in isolation. Our own prison population is 85,000. The US throw too many people in prison for a long time without any form of rehabilitation.

The warden wanted to get people out of isolation because they would be dangerous when they come out straight into the community from prison. One prisoner said that when he was out of prison straight from isolation he stayed in his room for 5 months until his mum told him he was not in prison and could come out. He became institutionalized.

They would carry out protests like flooding the cell cutting themselves and throwing excrement. Many had mental health and substance misuse issues. These isolated prisoners were self harming and acting like animals because they were treated like it.

The prisoners also had a novel way of interacting with one another by passing newspapers, drugs and blades using string and throwing them under the prison doors.

so much ass-fucking and mouth-raping in prison, guys get broken ribs while being gang-raped, its inhuman conditions and noone cares. These guys get out lATer in worse shape than when they went in. Then they go out and orally rape children, old ladies, etc. A revolving door. Us prison system is brutal beyond belief.

One guy was in prison for punching someone in a fight and ended up there for 7 years when he should have been out a lot earlier all because of all the incidents in prison.

Well prison systems are a difficult thing because they are expensive and they are full of people who need various kinds of treatment and care. Cook County Jail is the largest mental health provider in the state of Illinois and that is not so much a "prison issue" as it is a mental health issue.

As bad as things are right now, it's been worse before and it IS worse in other countries. It is still a large problem waiting for a solution. What that solution is well that is anyone's guess. I would say better and more mental health services, keeping kids in school, and keeping people employed. Another thing about the mentally ill is that the overwhelming majority of them are homeless. Whether they suffer from Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress or whatever they need treatment and some need to be watched over. It is a very sad thing but it's not JUST an America problem Master

What they do,they isolate gang members, or dangerous individuals, in separate prisons. Then they start to feed on themselves. My 'little brother' got out in 2011, he has been locked down since 1999. The gangsters start politicking, and, next thing you know, your cellie stabs you. They make monsters, and the whole system is run by gang members.
For example, the number of gang murders in LA, among Hispanic gang members has plummeted since the early 90s. Because the Mexican Mafia put a stop to drive bys and other things that make 'La Raza' look bad. My uncle told me that he saw at least 200 stabbings in prison to enforce this. Another example...My 'little brother' is an esteemed gang member. A decade ago he was in county with a kid that had an 18 month term; somebody talked bad about my brother and this kid cut his throat and, instead of going home, caught another 5 years.
I know a guy that was never a gang member, just a solid stand up individual; a bully in his own right, he liked to beat up gang members. So they told on him, got him validated and put in the hole with them, so they could kill him. He's my age, no young man, and he had two choices; sacrifice his principles and lock up, or get killed.

True about mental health but the culture of throwing people in prison is not a solution. The US have the highest number of poeople in prison for its population.

It costs £40,000 a year to keep someone in prison and £4,000 to put them on probation.

Well Master I'd counter with the fact that most of the mentally ill like to self medicate and if they don't have jobs then they also tend to break laws...so they can LEGALLY wind up in jail for a time. Also the homeless do enjoy going not to "big boy jail" but they like getting locked up during the winter every so often and they will break the law to do it.

Explain how cost effective it is when let's say a repeat offender drunk driver kills someone while out on probation. Probation is ok in some cases, and sometimes it's wrong.

There is a risk when you put people out in the community on probation. There are serious further offences from people on probation.

Locking them up means they will not be able to do that unless they are allowed out at certain times.

In the San Bernardino County jail- the facility in Etiwanda holds about 5000 and there are other county jails for a population of 1.5 million- they refer to the 'double hot wing.' That is when two deputies grab a guy and chicken wing his arms while a third pepper sprays him. I know a guy that has been pepper sprayed so many times, he is immune to it. A deputy messed up a visit from his girl so, back on the tier, he assaulted the deputy. It was a personal matter and he was handling it. The deputy maced him and he just went ahead and kept kicking that ass.

And again try explaining how much money was saved in granting someone probation to a family who lost a loved one due to that decision....that right there is where you lose me on that angle

There was one dangous prisoner who basically said he wanted to move to a prison closer to his family and children. He said he would kill anyone to make it happen. He was in isolation but the governor wanted him to behave, get back in general population before he would consider it. When he left the room a warden said there was no way he wanted him in the general population.

SECURITY GUARDS ARE COMPLICIT IN favoring certain individuals in jail whose cohorts outside of jail can threaten the guard's family. There is a don't ask-don't tell environment where a guard will not question an inmate's warnings that gang members outside the prison could bump one of his family members. Ugly situation.

Yes I seen this documentary, you lock someone up for that long no wonder they go mad, Yep
there are some nasty individuals, you keep a dog on a chain he will go mad,
So if we treat people like animals they will act like animals, some people need locking up
but in the US they have a very large prison population.
Maybe it time to stop locking people up for petty crimes, and only lock up harden criminals,
I am no expert just something to think about.!
