    Default Jose Torres Passes

Former world champion Jose “Chegui” Torres passed away at the age of 72 this morning in Ponce, Puerto Rico. An Olympic silver medalist in 1956, Torres (41-3-1, 29 KOs) knocked out Willie Pastrano in March 1965 to take the WBC and WBA light heavyweight world championship, which he defended three times. After retiring in 1969, he served as television commentator, journalist, author, and became chairman of the NY State Boxing Commission as well as President of the WBO. He was a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Fightnews.com sends our sympathies to Jose’s family and many friends.

Damn, and I was just thinking about him a while ago. He was a warrior, God Bless him.

RIP He was a good, solid fighter and seemed like a good guy. Two tough battles with Dick Tiger and a win over Willie Pastrano and a war with Eddie Cotton, gets my respect.

Puerto Rican boxer Jose Torres dies at 72

PONCE, Puerto Rico (AP) — Former light heavyweight champion Jose Torres has died in his native Puerto Rico. He was 72.

His widow, Ramonita Ortiz, says Torres died Monday of a heart attack.
Torres won the world light heavyweight title in 1965 by beating Willie Pastrano at Madison Square Garden in New York. He made three title defenses before losing to Dick Tiger in 1966.

Torres began fighting when he joined the U.S. Army as a teenager, and won a silver medal at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics competing for the United States.

After retirement, he became an author, chaired the New York State Athletic Commission in the 1980s and served as supervisor for the World Boxing Organization.

Ortiz says Torres will be buried Thursday in Ponce.

As a fellow Damato fighter, Jose was a big supporter of Mike Tyson and an excellent fighter in his own right.

    RIP

"Chegui" One of Puerto Ricos greatest fighters ever...

    May he rest in peace.

Loved his fights because he always came to fight and gave it his all.
Real tough come forward style that he had.

I personally thought he lost to Paret but it was a damn! close fight that could have gone either way.
The choker of a loss vs. Florentino had no effects on his career he bounced right back from that and did not let that get to him.

I also had him beating Tiger in the second fight 8-7, I havent seen the fight in a while so I'll try and revist it if I find the time.
