Default GBP claiming Mayweather vs Marquez will do more than 1M PPV Buys

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7Gpd...layer_embeddedI got to say this is an insult to boxing fan's intelligence. GBP & HBO put up this infomercial, buying air time as if it was genuine news. They didn't even bother to ask tough questions.

There is no way this fight will break 600k and I doubt it will break 500k.

    Yeah, that was pretty disgusting.

Floyd sold so well in his last two fights because of Hatton and DelaHoya. Mayweather against Marquez is not a megafight because these are two fighters whose paths were really not meant to cross. The public is not drooling at the mouth in expectation of this fight at all and I cannot see the PPV figures being anything special. There was no hype for a Mayweather/Marquez fight prior to the fight being made and this kind of drivel shows GBP trying anything they can to at least garner some level of respectability for it.

It's sad really. Over a million sales? Hilarious.

Spot on mate, the real interest was never in this fight. It's a made up 'megafight' as opposed to a real 'by public demand' fight.

I think this one might end up being a bit embarassing in the end in terms of numbers.

I believe they also said Mayweather-Hatton was projecting to do 1.5 million, and that ended up somewhere in the 850K range.

I think this fight does about 550-600K. Maybe a little more.

What do you expect them to say? Cripe sakes, they are trying to promote a fight and garner interest in the sport we are all here for and love. I liked it actually, and hope it drums up more interest and does good numbers. No one promoting anything is insulting your intelligence. You think they are going to say, "Yea, well, this prob. isn't going to do so good, so yea, don't get too excited and think of buying it or anything." lol

The insult is you are expected to believe that this was a news worthy story that transcends the normal bounds of the boxing world.

Promoting is one thing and propaganda is another. If fans are genuinely not interested in watching the fight, is lying to them going to make them more interested? Maybe, If your the type that stays up all night watching infomercials buying products that don't work.

I just think it is very naive of anyone to feel insulted by this. This isn't tailored for those of us on this board, or in the know who have a handle on what is what. It is marketing, as you suggested. Aimed at bringing people to purchase the fight, and who knows, maybe even new people to the sport. Simple as. And you don't sell anything by being negative. You create hype and hopefully interest. The insult of intelligence imo is not seeing it for what it is and taking it as some kinda personal insult.

They were, umm, optimistic. oh noes.

I think this just shows how uneducated the boxing public is or rather the public is of boxing. I give Marquez a way better chance than I would have Oscar or Hatton. He was able walk roughly even with PACquiao twice and the boxing fans should realize weight isn't going to be a big factor in Mayweather's favor. He isn't a real welterweight, and he's counter puncher who doesn't fight the type of fight that is dictated with size and strength.

Of course what those guys say is an insult to hardcore boxing fans like us, but for the general public they are trying to sell the fight, so expect to see them hype up the fight.

500-600k ppv buys for this fight, somewhere around that range.

I disagree with you on that point. Out of the three, without knowing the outcomes of the ODLH and Hatton fights, I would give ODLH the best chance of beating PBF. His size and the fact that the fight was at 154 are what influence my opinion most. When all is said and done, I believe his split decision loss to PBF as opposed to Hatton's knockout (and Marquez's knockout imo) will be the closest fight with Floyd and will validate that opinion.

Weight will be a big factor although not in the way you are describing. In terms of size, Floyd is an average welterweight - there is a reason he has fought at that weight the last three years. However, that isn't why size will play the role. Size will play a role because Marquez isn't a welterweight or a junior welterweight. At his biggest, I believe him to be a big lightweight. Recall that Juan Diaz buzzed him a couple of times and he isn't known as a big punching lightweight (less than 50% knockout percentage). I believe Floyd chose Marquez as an opponent when there were better welterweight opponents out there with bigger names because he wanted a fighter he could impose his size and strength to create a knockout. He could have fought Cotto and he could have fought Shane. Both would have much bigger fights than Marquez, but he wouldn't have knocked out either of those fighters. In those fights, Floyd would probably fight his usual counter-punching style (what sense would it make to stand toe-to-toe with Shane?), but with Marquez he can afford to fight a "rougher" fight, which will do more for him in negotiations with Pacquiao if Pacquiao wins his upcoming fight.

Your application is misconstrued, boxing fans are the buyers. If I walked into a car dealership looking for a muscle car and a salesman offered me a commute car (because that is what he had) telling me it was a sports car as a buyer I'd be insulted and leave. A person doesn't have to be naive to know what they want. It's not my intention to be negative about the fight. It's just part of my character to be honest and for me it crosses the line when it's a lie. I can do with out the BS.

As for marketing, I agree and think it's a very smart idea from HBO & GBP, and I'm sure they will reach some audiences with it, including those boxing fans that jump on the band wagon. If it breaks 1M PPV's, I'm happy for boxing! If it does less than 300K, I'll be happy for Marquez and very sad for boxing because the blame will likely go to the UFC. I'll also have some pity for Mayweather if it does that poorly but only a little.
