Default HBO doing a Super Six tournament at 140 pounds?

If HBO delivers on plans to hold a similar tournament for light-welters, Khan will be a major attraction – presuming he does not stay out of that series and opts instead for a mega-fight with Ricky Hatton.

Frank Warren may be right about another golden age of British boxing | Kevin Mitchell | Sport | guardian.co.uk

    Anybody know anything about this?

Urango deserves a place in there.

I agree. This would be great for boxing. The best vs the best. I'm just not sure Warren would think Khan is "ready" to be thrown into the mix with dangerous fighters like this. The chances that he'd win the thing aren't great and could do serious damage to his supposed 'mega-star' future.

I also agree Urango deserves a spot. I don't know who's place I'd give up though. Alexander is a bit greener than some of the others, but he'd easily be one of my favorites to win the entire thing. Ah well, the tournament hasn't even been announced yet, hopefully it'll come together.

agree with u mate. would have bradley the favorite out of the lot too be honest. i really rate him. if this shit came off i do give khan a good chance. especially with roach in his corner. roach is more of a promoter than warren too khan at the minute. at least he knows what kind of competion he knows what khan is capable of. if roach says khan can win the tornament then i believe he can win it. thats how much i rate roach

i originally had him on there, but replaced with Malignaggi/ Diaz cause felt that the rest would probably just completely outbox him in a slow pace boring fight, but no way anyone could deny he deserves a spot up there, i just thought that the ones mentioned would make it the most competitive

    Anybody know anything about this?
I heard about 3 weeks to a month ago about this. Heard it was going to be a 4 man tournament similar to the Middleweight tournament that Hopkins won by beating Trinidad.

The names I heard lined up for it are...

    Amir Khan
    Marcos Maidana
    Victor Ortiz
    Devon Alexander

We had a thread about it. Alot seemed to complain that while this is a good idea, unlike the Super-Middle Tournament, it won't come close to deciding the divisions best fighter when Bradley, Malignaggi, Diaz, Lamont Peterson, Juan Urango etc aren't part of the tournament.

if they only have 4 participants then why not have all the 4 current champs so that we can have one undisputed unified champ at the end.

    wbc - devon alexander
wba - winner of amir khan/marcos maidana
    ibf - urango
wbo - winner of lamont peterson/timothy bradley

Yeah they need to have the winner of Bradley Peterson at the very least, unless they market it as the tournament to find the legit challenger to the winner of tonight's fight.

But a tournament with Bradley, Khan, Alexander, Malignaggi, Ortiz and Maidana is pretty sexy imo. Definitely one to get excited about.

You'd have to fancy the current holders Bradley, Khan and Alexander to be the favourites but the other three are all capable of scoring upsets.

Actually I only just noticed that HBO not Showtime are proposing this.

In that case it's obvious the reason Bradley is not in their lineup is because he fights on Showtime.

Ortiz and Maidana have both been on HBO, Juan Diaz is a regular too so if he beats Paulie again tonight and wants to step up to 140 I guess he'd make it in.

HBO would love to get Khan in the tournament too, he's the most marketable Brit since Hatton, and could possibly be a bigger PPV draw in the future than even a heavyweight David Haye.

Fantastic for boxing i also would love to see Amir Khan in this, if he could win this tournament no one could doubt him. And style wise there will be some FOTY candidates aswell.

Might as well put Hatton in there. If showtime can put in a dude that was just coming on a major stoppage like Jermain Taylor, why not put Hatton's head on the line just for the hell of it (at least I think that is what Taylor being in the super six was about).

Because they can't afford Hatton in this. It costs a far bit of money to put these tournaments together and even afer being KO'ed, Ricky can earn more money in a single fight than HBO can afford to put up for this tournament. No point putting Ricky in there, he's too close to retirement.

The whole point of this is to showcase some of the new talent in the division. But as somebody else stated, the likes of Bradley and Peterson have developed on Showtime, and HBO likes to discover their own product. However, Paulie Malignaggi, Juan Urango and despite the defeat Juan Diaz, are all HBO fighters so should be considered. I assume its because they're not new talent and have been around for a few years.

The four names mentioned all have ability and time to rule the division. They're also young and have contrasting styles. I can see where the idea has developed from, it'll just be interesting to see if it happens.
