I also know that Marvin Hagler only got paid $50 bucks for his 1st fight, Mike Tyson got paid $500 for his 1st fight.

And of course JMM turned down a 1 million+ payday to fight Chris John for $35,000 and get robbed in Indonesia. Never understood why.

From the top of my head, and they're pretty accurate.

Tyson 22 million vs. Spinks 13 million in '88.
Tyson 25 million vs. McNeely 1 million in comeback fight for Tyson.

Hell if some of these figures on John Ruiz are accurate the guy probably made more than $20 million+ in the ring in his career. John fukking Ruiz! But I can't hate, get your money Ruiz!

Yeah, ol' Zab got taken in negotiations but he stated this before and after the fight. He said he knew he would KO Spinks the next fight and then that is when his money would come.

That is what a real fighter does. He takes short money for a great opportunity.

I suppose that's motivation enough to knock someone out...

Don't know how much he made after this fight but I wonder if in retrospect, he feels that was the right decision..?

Athlete.com has about the most accurate earnings for fighters....

Tyson made 30 million for at least 2 of his fights...To think he made almost 400 million in the ring and has not even a fraction of it....

In truth these guys have a dangerous job and every fight could be their last....

they have nothing to fall back on...EG- 401K, retirement benefits etc so thew risk has to be worth the reward no?

I remember Tim Witherspoon being aggrieved (and rightly so) about taking home 90,000 USD for fighting Bruno (who received over 900,000 ST). His offical purse was 500,000 but after carl king, don king, sparring partners and expenses were taken out he was left with just the 90k. He said that he asked carl king (who was his 'manager') what was he was getting and King said that he didnt know and had to ask his father!!!! He came back and said they were getting a dime (or maybe it was a nickel, it was some kinda american slang for half a million)

That was around the time he said about Don King "If you make a dollar he wants the first 110 cents."

    nothing to fall back on?

mate as you said Tyson made $400M. Secure the 200M at a bank for maybe 5% per annum and you have.

$1.6 Million dollar per month!!!! and that's just securing the half.

Imagine witdrawing $1M each month for your everyday needs.

Guys like Tyson and DLH with their earnings in the hundred millions is rare...That is why it was such a big deal....

I was speaking in the terms of the average fighter....The average champion of like Glen Johnson's caliber or simular....You have to realize...

If the purse is 1 million it gets broken down

    1,000,000- 20% to manager

    800,000 left...minus taxes....comes to about

500,000 left....Then payroll for trainer, cutman, cornermen....comes to another 100,000 (at that stage in the game trainers usually get a percentage and other corner men fixed rate)..

400,000 left add in various other expenses it comes to about another 50,000

now with 350,000 left people say hey I could live nicely off that but now you need think...

They have a family and bills owed to pay.....by the end of that million dollar payday when all is said and done they end up with about 200,000 to do as they wish......Most will live off of it until the next payday and that is not to say it will be that much....

A fighter retired at abt age 35 lets say....Now they have to raise their family on the ring earnings, pay taxes every year off of it...property taxes etc....from money not being replenished....They need pay for kids educations....etc.....This money has to last them a lifetime.....

we see that number of the payday and often forget what there is to pay out and forget this is all they have and unlike us who works tilo they are 65 or so these guys are done in their 30's
