Default Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer

    By Lem Satterfield

A few weeks ago, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer had tried to create a rematch between Bernard Hopkins and the recently retired Joe Calzaghe of Wales. After a have few positive conversations, Calzaghe made a decision to stay retired. With a Calzaghe rematch out of the way, Schaefer is exploring the possibility of matching Hopkins (51-5-1, 32 KOs) against undefeated IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (26-0, 21 KOs).

If Schaefer is able to reach an agreement with Interbox, who promote Bute, he would like to stage the fight in the fall. Bothe fighters saw action in the month of April. Hopkins won a twelve round unanimous decision in a rematch with Roy Jones Jr. Bute stopped Edison Miranda in three rounds. The Hopkins-Bute fight would likley take place at a catch-weight between 168 and 175-pounds. In several past interviews, Hopkins said he was able to make 170-pounds for a fight with Bute.

"I actually talked with our friend at Interbox Promotions, Jean Bedard, who is the CEO of Interbox, which promotes Lucian Bute. We spoke about the possibility of putting together a fight with Bernard Hopkins. And they would be open to doing a fight between Bute and Hopkins," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com.

"And so we're currently discussing that. The fight would be sometime between September and November -- somewhere between that window. That's what we would like to do. And I'm waiting for Jean Bedard to get back to me."

Hopkins looked totally shot to me against Jones Jr. He needs to accept that he is boring and past it and that nobody has any real interest in seeing him fight on.

Bute probably outworks or even stops Hopkins at this stage.

Bute has just begun to reach his prime....And he looks great, Hopkins is past it holding on to what once was...He is not a walkover in any way and knows how to survive but he has to call it a day...He has become painful to watch in the ring...

Bute takes a UD after some ugly moments caused by Hopkins if this goes off but I don't see it to be honest unless GBP offers some big big money...Butes people are looking for the winner of the SSix

Schaefer said Hopkins was going to fight Calzaghe this fall so I take everything he says with a pinch of salt to be honest.

I've always been a Hop fan but Bute is just too quick and skilled at this point in Hopkins' career for even HIS crafty techniques to work on. Hopkins has slowed and his output is far declining. He's become more of a target and gives up early rounds.

Hopkins' farewell should have been the Pavlik fight. He will never look that good again.

Bute wins rounds 1-6 and a few down the stretch for a UD. That's how I'd see it happening.

I think its time for Hopkins to hang em up aswell, hes had his day, now he is simply just pushing it, bute is young, strong, and busy. Hopkins can do well sure, but hell simply get outworked. He avenged Jones (sorta) he needs to say bye. He is a legend he deserves his respect, but enough is enough.

Bute UD, afterwards Hopkins still refuses to retire, calls out Roy Jones for a trilogy fight.

That's exactly how I see it. Hopkins is just a horrible fighter to watch these days and he seems to have slipped badly over his last few fights, which isn't surprising given his age. Bute will get caught a couple times, but Hopkins won't be able to hurt him with anything about that his head and it will turn into an ugly, foul-filled (mostly from Hopkins), clinch-fest which Bute will win.

    Hopkins needs to go away.

You give a LOT of credit to Bute, who fights a lot of chumps. I mean he's not a cherry picker, but He doesn't exactly beat anyone on the road... ever. And my guess would be he thinks hes a big enough attraction to get the winner to meet him in Canada. And, he gets knocked the f*** out. He's not really that good. When he tires he is downright sloppy. http://www.saddoboxing.com/boxingfor...ies/tongue.gif

But Hopkins? I think Bute beats him soundly. He's got enough skills to make him look bad. Hopkins will have to really work to win on the road against this guy.

Other then the Andrade fight when has he tired? What other fight did he show he gassed? None I can think of......So we will take 1 moment and that was the 12th round of a tough tough fight he was dominating.....In the 12th yes he tired horribly but again how can 1 time be used as the measuring stick?

    Fighting Chumps?

All of a sudden Bika is a chump? Bika has been one of the most feared contenders in the SMW division for years now great fighter as in Elite no but he has never been walked over Calzaghe wanted nothing to do with him again...

Andrade is a chump all of a sudden? Wait I know he lost to Kessler who lost to Calzaghe and Ward so Kessler is third rate and since Andrade lost to Kessler that makes him 4th rate regardless of the fact he is one of the divisions most durable fighters and has only lost to 2 of the divisions best fighters in the last 10 years....I guess the KO of Andrade must be because of Librado's glass chin?

Zuniga lost to Inkin, Pavlik and Santos swhen Santos was something the guy is certainly not a walk over since it took Pavlik 9 to stop him and the fact it was Pavlik when Pavlik was the most feared contender from 154-175....

He beat Miranda who has been stopped before but had just put Ward to the limit and is still one of the best 1 shot KO artist in the game....Bute beat him effortlessly...

Berrio is a chump as well I suppose...Former title holder who gave Mack his first loss and current WBO champion Stieglitz...Add in his 80% KO ratio and it makes him a true chump....

The wins that Bute is getting even at home judges can not help you score the KO....

Funny how Calzaghe had people making every excuse in the world when he stayed and fought at home 90% of his career...

26-0 with 21 ko's....Explain how the hometown advantage scored him the 80% KO ratio?

If we broke down the SS participants and their opp before the tourney only Kessler and AA can claim better opp...maybe....Both fight at home a hell of a LOT....Are they chumps as well?

Ward is a chump because his last 2 were at home yes?

C'Mon man back up ypour arguement or at least check your facts before you popst things

Bute should stop him alright. If he doesn't stop Hopkins it's shameful.
