Default So How Good was Marvin Hagler Exactly?

    Hey

Just wrote this video-based analysis of Marvelous Marvin Hagler and would be really interested in knowing whther it's worthy of a thread on Saddo's 'Boxing Talk'. Any thoughts, views or contradictions?

    Cheers

I think I read something presented in the same way but on Roberto Duran... Was that you?

    *** Edit ***

Yeah it was you... That was good stuff! Look forward to reading this one

Yeah he certainly does. He has married an Italian and does bits of acting and stuff. That's one guy who deserves all of the respect in the world because when he walked away from boxing, that's exactly what he did, walked away! No half-baked comebacks for that man!

Enjoyed that analysis on Hagler, i only have this to say. How would the Marvelous one handle the piston like jab of Monzon and that right hand accurately nicknamed 'shotgun'? Monzon was a beast of a fighter, tall, powerful, tough, with not only punching power but superb boxing skils both offensively and defensively. Monzon's only flaw was he didn't train, (started preparation just weeks before a big fight), smoked like a chimney, drank like a fish and fucked anything that moved. Now what would have happened if Monzon really put his mind to his work? Hagler was totally dominant in the 80's as was Monzon in the 70's, a Hagler V Monzon fight is worth analysis on it's own.
Loved both fighters, i just wish Hagler had got the rematch with Leonard.

I think in a hypothetical Haggler vs Monzon matchup you'd have to lean towards Marvin for the following reasons...
#1 He's a southpaw, the jab (no matter how great) would have not been the wise punch to keep pushing out there.

#2 Haggler's work rate, he worked every second of every round

#3 Haggler's chin, if he could take flush shots from Tommy Hearns he could take shots from anyone

#4 Distance, Haggler would smother Monzon. Monzon was a fighter who liked to get lots of leverage on his punches and it's hard to transfer that weight from the back foot to the front foot when someone is right in your chest.

I just think if you're going to beat Marvin Haggler you'd either need big time Bob Foster type power or loads of speed and either way you'd need great stamina and solid defense.

I think Monzon would have belted Hagler, Monzon was a lot tougher than Hearns and that right hand was paralyzing. The southpaws worst enemy!

I stand by my answer, Haggler is too tough and too relentless for Monzon

Prime for Prime Hagler beats Monzon by late ko or UD .
Monzon was just to robotic , Marvin would have beaten him for sure.

question on number one. why do you think the jab would have been a bad punch to employ against southpaw Hagler? Just out of curiousity btw.

Well Daxx how do you see it did Marvin not lose first part of the fight. Was it not a close fight in your eyes i think it was pretty close. Not only that but Leonard was pretty much consider done after the Hearns fight, because he almost lost vision in one eye. Pretty much it was chicken shit of Marvin to give up and not do a rematch. Leonard and Hagler fight was close and every time we do score cards its close.

Marv had been there and done it... For so many years! I'm quite surprised that anyone would think that he was chickenshit for anything?! But I guess you are genuine in your opinion... Leonard was one of the original cherry-pickers... Hate to say it but he was. I guess Hagler was kinda ready to be cherry-picked

But even so... How do we know Leonard would of even gave him a rematch For example, how many years was it before he gave Hearns another go?

Either way Hagler was clearly sick of boxing. He left and never came back for that reason alone. Research will show you this

The ref that saw it 118-111 or something was certainly blind.
